Diesel generator (DG) sets are widely used as reliable power sources in industries, offices, hospitals, commercial buildings, residential complexes, and other facilities. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions that need to be properly managed.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) A can be installed on an existing DG set to help control targeted pollutants in the exhaust. Choosing the right RECD is important because different generators have different engine specifications, exhaust conditions, operating loads, and emission-control requirements.

This guide explains the key factors to consider when selecting a suitable RECD for your DG set.

What Is an RECD for a DG Set?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . It is an emission-control system designed for installation on an existing diesel generator.

The device is generally integrated into the exhaust system, where it treats exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. Depending on the technology, an RECD may help control particulate matter and other targeted pollutants.

The right device should be selected according to the specific DG set rather than using a standard solution for every generator.

Why Is Choosing the Right RECD Important?

Every DG set has different operating characteristics. Selecting an unsuitable device can create compatibility and performance issues.

A properly selected RECD should be compatible with:

DG-set capacity
Engine specifications
Exhaust gas flow
Exhaust temperature
Operating load
Exhaust back pressure
Installation arrangement
Maintenance requirements

Technical evaluation before installation can help ensure that the emission-control device works appropriately with the generator.

1. Check the DG-Set Capacity

The first step is to identify the capacity of your DG set, usually specified in kVA.

The RECD should be suitable for the generator's capacity and operating range. A device designed for one operating range may not be appropriate for a generator with significantly different exhaust characteristics.

Therefore, always provide the exact DG-set capacity when discussing RECD requirements.

2. Check the Engine Make and Model

Engine specifications are another important factor.

Different diesel engines have different combustion systems, exhaust characteristics, and operating conditions. The engine make and model can therefore influence which emission-control technology is appropriate.

Before selecting an RECD, collect details such as:

Engine manufacturer
Engine model
Fuel system
Engine rating
Manufacturing information
Existing emission specifications, where applicable

These details can help with technical assessment.

3. Evaluate Exhaust Gas Flow

The amount of exhaust gas produced by a DG set is an important consideration when selecting an emission-control device.

The RECD should be capable of handling the exhaust flow generated by the particular engine without creating unsuitable restrictions.

Exhaust flow should therefore be evaluated as part of the selection process.

4. Check Exhaust Temperature

Exhaust temperature can influence the operation and suitability of certain emission-control technologies.

Before installation, the operating exhaust temperature should be considered along with the technical requirements of the selected device.

A device should not be selected solely on the basis of DG-set capacity.

5. Consider Exhaust Back Pressure

Back pressure is an important technical consideration when adding equipment to a DG-set exhaust system.

An emission-control device should be installed in a way that maintains appropriate exhaust-system conditions. Excessive restriction can potentially affect engine performance.

For this reason, back-pressure specifications should be checked before installation and monitored where required.

6. Identify the Pollutants You Need to Control

Different RECD technologies are designed to control different pollutants.

Diesel exhaust can contain:

Particulate Matter (PM)
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Hydrocarbons (HC)
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

Some technologies primarily focus on particulate emissions, while others may target additional pollutants.

Before selecting a device, identify the emission-control objective and check the manufacturer's technical information to understand which pollutants the system is designed to address.

7. Review Applicable CPCB Requirements

Environmental requirements should be considered before purchasing an RECD.

CPCB guidelines for RECDDG-set owners should review the applicable and other current environmental provisions relevant to their specific generator and installation.

Requirements can vary depending on factors such as DG-set capacity, application, location, applicable emission standards, and current regulations.

Always verify the latest applicable requirements before making a final selection.

8. Check Technical Documentation

A reliable selection process should include a review of the RECD's technical documentation.

Look for information such as:

Product specifications
Supported DG-set capacities
Emission-control technology
Testing information
Installation requirements
Maintenance procedures
Operating limitations
Applicable certifications or approvals

Proper documentation helps users understand whether the device is appropriate for their particular application.

9. Consider Installation Space

The available space around the DG set and exhaust system should also be evaluated.

The selected RECD may require adequate space for installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance. The exhaust arrangement may also need suitable mounting and connection points.

Planning the installation area beforehand can make the process easier.

10. Understand Maintenance Requirements

Every emission-control system requires appropriate maintenance.

Before purchasing an RECD, understand:

Cleaning requirements
Inspection frequency
Component replacement requirements
Back-pressure monitoring
Soot or deposit management
Service requirements

Maintenance requirements can vary significantly depending on the technology used.

11. Consider DG-Set Operating Conditions

The way a generator operates can influence emission-control requirements.

Consider:

Average operating load
Operating hours
Frequency of generator use
Standby or prime-power operation
Typical exhaust conditions

A DG set used for occasional backup power may have different operating characteristics from one used regularly for extended periods.

12. Do Not Ignore DG-Set Maintenance

An RECD cannot compensate for an engine that is poorly maintained.

Before or alongside RECD installation, make sure the generator is properly serviced. Components such as air filters, fuel systems, engine oil, cooling systems, and exhaust systems should be maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Mechanical problems can contribute to excessive emissions, so the underlying engine condition should always be considered.

Common Mistakes When Choosing an RECD

DG-set owners should avoid several common mistakes:

Choosing an RECD only based on price
Ignoring the engine make and model
Not checking exhaust flow
Ignoring exhaust temperature
Failing to consider back pressure
Selecting a device without reviewing technical documentation
Assuming every RECD controls the same pollutants
Neglecting maintenance requirements
Using outdated regulatory information
Installing the device without proper technical evaluation

A complete assessment is generally better than selecting a device based on a single specification.

Step-by-Step RECD Selection Checklist

Before finalizing an RECD, use this checklist:

Step 1: Identify the DG-set capacity.

Step 2: Record the engine make and model.

Step 3: Check exhaust gas flow and temperature.

Step 4: Evaluate exhaust back pressure.

Step 5: Identify the pollutants that need to be controlled.

Step 6: Review the applicable environmental and CPCB requirements.

Step 7: Compare suitable RECD technologies.

Step 8: Review technical documentation and certifications.

Step 9: Check installation space and exhaust compatibility.

Step 10: Understand maintenance and servicing requirements.

This approach can help DG-set owners make a technically informed selection.
