Students in India who apply to universities abroad may be asked to report academic results in a format that differs from the one shown on their transcript. Some institutions use CGPA on a 10-point scale, while many US institutions refer to GPA on a 4.0 scale. These systems summarise performance differently, and there is no universally accepted formula that converts every Indian CGPA into an exact US GPA.

The first step is to identify the grading rules used by the school, college, or university that issued the result. Some institutions publish a percentage or grade-point conversion formula. Others provide a grading scale without a direct equivalent. The receiving university may evaluate the transcript according to its own policy or request a credential evaluation.

Why a simple ratio may be misleading

Multiplying a 10-point CGPA by 0.4 may look straightforward, but it assumes that both scales are directly proportional. In practice, grade boundaries and assessment methods can differ. A score near the top of one scale may not map to the same relative standing on another scale. Credit weighting and institutional rules can also influence the interpretation.

What to prepare for applications

Keep an official transcript, the grading-scale explanation, and any conversion policy published by the issuing institution. Check whether the application asks for the original CGPA, a self-reported GPA, or an external evaluation. If the instructions are unclear, contact admissions before submitting a converted figure.

Avoiding application errors

Do not present an unofficial estimate as an official equivalence. Avoid relying on a formula found online unless the receiving institution explicitly accepts it. Make sure the name of the grading system and maximum score are clearly stated wherever the application requests them.

International applications become easier when students explain their original academic system accurately and follow the receiving institution’s procedure. A conversion tool can help with early planning, but the university’s official requirements determine how the result will be assessed.
