A WordPress site can be started fresh by resetting its database while leaving its theme, plugin, upload, and core files on the server. This is useful because WordPress runs about 43% of all websites, so many site owners eventually need a clean rebuild without wiping everything from hosting.

TLDR: A site owner can keep the website files and reset only the WordPress database. For example, a test site with 120 demo posts, 38 draft pages, and 19 plugin settings can be cleaned in minutes while the theme files and uploaded assets stay on the server. The safest path is to make a full backup, use a reset plugin or WP-CLI, then rebuild content from a clean dashboard. This works best on staging first, not on the live site.

What “starting fresh” really means

Starting fresh does not always mean deleting the whole website folder. In most cases, it means clearing the database tables that store posts, pages, users, menus, plugin settings, comments, and site options.

The actual files are separate. These usually live in folders such as:

wp-content/themes for themes
wp-content/plugins for plugins
wp-content/uploads for media files
wp-admin and wp-includes for WordPress core files

When the database is reset, WordPress behaves like a new install. The files can remain untouched. That saves time, especially when a custom theme, media library, or paid plugin files are already in place.

Back up everything first

The first smart move is a full backup. Not just the database. Not just the files. Both.

A clean reset can go wrong fast if the wrong button is clicked. Honestly, it feels silly that one small plugin setting can erase weeks of work, but that is how these tools can behave. A site owner should save:

The full database export
The entire wp-content folder
The wp-config.php file
Any custom code snippets
A list of active plugins and theme settings

Many hosts offer one-click backups. A manual database export can also be made through phpMyAdmin. The WordPress team also explains backup basics in its support docs.

Use a staging site when possible

A staging site is a private copy of the live site. It lets the site owner reset, test, and rebuild without visitors seeing broken pages.

This is the safer route for business websites, shops, membership sites, and blogs with steady traffic. If the reset works well on staging, the changes can then be moved to the live site.

If the host does not offer staging, a local copy can work too. Tools like Local or DevKinsta let a developer test changes on a computer before touching the real site.

Option 1: Reset WordPress with a plugin

The most common method is using a reset plugin. These tools clear the database and return WordPress to a fresh state. Some also allow partial resets, such as clearing only posts, comments, transients, or theme options.

A typical plugin reset process looks like this:

Install a trusted reset plugin.
Confirm that a fresh backup exists.
Choose a full reset or a partial reset.
Read the warning screen carefully.
Type the required confirmation text.
Run the reset.
Log back in and rebuild the site.

The catch is that plugins differ a lot. One may keep the active theme. Another may deactivate every plugin. Another may delete media records but leave image files behind in the uploads folder. That can create clutter later.

Option 2: Reset the database with WP-CLI

WP-CLI is a command-line tool for WordPress. It is fast and clean, but it is not ideal for beginners. A developer may use it to reset the database without removing site files.

A common command is: wp db reset

This drops the database tables and recreates them. After that, WordPress needs to be installed again through the browser or another WP-CLI command.

This method is good for development sites, test installs, and agencies that rebuild sites often. It is risky on a live site unless the developer knows exactly what will happen.

Option 3: Manually clean the database

A manual reset is possible through phpMyAdmin or a database tool. The site owner can drop WordPress tables, then run the WordPress installer again.

This is powerful, but it is also easy to mess up. If the hosting account contains more than one WordPress install, the wrong table prefix can cause serious damage. Expect to waste time checking prefixes like wp_, blog_, or custom names before touching anything.

Manual cleanup is best handled by someone comfortable with databases.

What stays and what disappears

After a database reset, the website files usually remain on the server. That includes themes, plugins, images, PDFs, and custom code files.

But the WordPress dashboard may no longer “know” about some of them. For example, uploaded images may still sit in wp-content/uploads, but the media library records may be gone. The files exist, yet they may not show inside the dashboard.

Content and settings that usually disappear include:

Posts and pages
Comments
Menus
Widgets
Users, except the new admin account
Plugin options stored in the database
Theme customizer settings

After the reset

Once the reset is done, the site owner should reinstall key settings before adding content. That means setting the site title, permalink structure, timezone, homepage, and user roles.

Then plugins should be reactivated one at a time. This makes errors easier to spot. If five plugins are turned on at once and the site breaks, finding the cause takes longer.

Finally, unused files should be cleaned up. Old themes, inactive plugins, and orphaned uploads can slow backups and confuse future work.

FAQ

Can WordPress be reset without deleting files?

Yes. A database reset can clear content and settings while leaving WordPress files on the server.

Will media files stay after a reset?

Often, yes. The files may remain in the uploads folder, but they may disappear from the media library if database records are removed.

Is a reset plugin safe?

It can be safe with a full backup. It should be tested on staging first whenever possible.

Does resetting WordPress remove themes and plugins?

Usually the files stay. Some reset tools may deactivate them or clear their settings.

What is the safest way to start fresh?

The safest way is to back up the site, clone it to staging, reset the database there, then rebuild and push the clean version live.
