You have the question in front of you, the deadline is getting closer, and the blank document still looks intimidating. The subject may be familiar, but knowing what your lecturer actually expects is another matter. Should you research first? Start with an introduction? Find some academic sources? Most of the uncertainty comes before the first sentence is written.

An essay is not simply a race to produce 2,000 or 3,000 words. Much of the work happens before and after drafting: understanding the question, deciding what you want to argue, finding evidence that genuinely helps and leaving enough time to spot weaknesses in the finished draft.

Start With the Question, Not the Search Bar

Opening the library database straight away feels productive, but it can send your research in the wrong direction. If you have not worked out what the question requires, you can spend hours reading useful material that never answers the assignment.

Look at the instruction word first. Analyse, evaluate, compare, assess and discuss require different kinds of responses. If the question asks you to evaluate something, for example, explaining what it is is only part of the task. You need to consider the evidence, weigh competing points and reach a reasoned judgement.

Break the question into parts. What is the subject? What are you being asked to do with it? Is the discussion limited by a particular period, group, theory or issue?

Then rewrite the question in your own words. If you cannot explain what the assignment is asking without repeating the original wording, you probably need to clarify it before researching.

Work Out Your Argument Before Collecting Everything

Research becomes difficult to control when every interesting source looks relevant. One article leads to another, then a book, then a reference from that book. Soon you have dozens of tabs open and no clear idea what your essay is trying to establish.

Start with a provisional argument. It does not need to survive unchanged. Good research can alter your position. What matters is having a working answer that gives your reading a direction.

From there, identify the points that could support or challenge that answer. If two planned paragraphs would make almost the same point, they probably need combining. If a paragraph has no clear connection to your main position, question why it is there.

A useful test is to remove it mentally. If the argument would still work almost exactly as before, the paragraph may not be doing enough.

Be Selective About the Evidence You Use

Finding sources is only half the job. The harder question is why a particular source deserves space in your essay.

It might provide evidence for a claim, introduce a useful theory, offer a competing interpretation or expose a weakness in an existing argument. If you cannot explain what a source contributes, finding another source may be more useful than citing it simply because it looks academic.

The right evidence also depends on the subject. Journal articles and academic books are central to many assignments, while official reports, professional bodies, archives, legislation or specialist publications may carry more weight in particular fields.

Take notes you can actually use later

Avoid filling your notes with copied passages. Record the point you found useful, why it matters to your argument and enough publication information to find it again. Keep page numbers where they are relevant to your referencing requirements.

This becomes particularly valuable when you start drafting. Remembering that you found a useful argument is not much help if you cannot locate the source again.

When you use the evidence, do not let the quotation or citation do all the work. Explain what it shows, how it relates to your point and whether it supports, complicates or challenges your position.

Plan the Route Your Essay Will Take

Your essay plan does not need to look impressive. A page of rough notes is enough if it shows the route of your argument.

Start with your main position and arrange the supporting points in an order that makes sense. The body should develop that position, not simply reproduce the order in which you discovered information during research.

A paragraph also needs more than a point followed by a citation. After presenting evidence, explain why it matters. That might mean interpreting a finding, comparing two scholars' positions or showing how a piece of evidence affects your answer to the question.

Before writing the full draft, ask:

Does every paragraph help answer the exact question I was given?
Can I explain what each major source contributes?
Have I interpreted my evidence rather than simply described it?
Does the order of my points help the argument develop?
Have I dealt with an alternative interpretation where it genuinely matters?

If further reading changes your thinking, change the plan. A plan should reflect your argument, not force you to defend an idea you no longer find convincing.

Do Not Mistake Information for Analysis

This is a common weakness in well-researched essays. Knowing a subject thoroughly does not automatically produce an analytical answer.

Suppose you are discussing a theory. Explaining who developed it and outlining its main ideas may be necessary background. Analysis begins when you examine what that theory actually helps you explain. Does the evidence support it? Where does it fall short? Does another interpretation account for the same evidence differently?

The distinction is easier to see with an example. Saying that a policy produced a particular outcome is description. Examining the evidence for that relationship, considering another explanation and deciding which interpretation is better supported is analysis.

Know What You Are Trying to Achieve

A strong university essay does not need to mention every possible idea. It needs to give a clear, defensible answer to the question and show how the evidence led you there.

By the end, the reader should not have to reconstruct your argument from scattered information. They should be able to see the question being answered, the position you have taken, the evidence supporting it and the reasoning connecting those pieces.

Understand the question first, research with a reason, build an argument rather than a pile of notes, and leave enough time to challenge your own draft.
