Industrial growth supports employment, manufacturing, and economic development. However, emissions from factories, power plants, cement units, brick kilns, and other industrial facilities can contribute to air pollution in cities. When these emissions combine with vehicle exhaust, construction dust, and unfavourable weather conditions, they can worsen urban smog.

Smog is more than a layer of visible haze. It may contain harmful gases and fine particles that affect public health, visibility, and the environment. Understanding the sources of industrial pollution and adopting effective control measures can help businesses contribute to cleaner air.

What Are Industrial Emissions?

Industrial emissions are pollutants released into the atmosphere during manufacturing, fuel combustion, material processing, and electricity generation. Their composition depends on the industry, equipment, fuel type, and production methods.

Common industrial pollutants include:

Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Small airborne particles released through combustion, grinding, material handling, and other processes.
Sulphur dioxide (SO₂): A gas produced mainly by burning sulphur-containing fuels.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx): Gases formed during high-temperature combustion.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Compounds released by certain solvents, fuels, coatings, and chemical processes.
Carbon monoxide (CO): A toxic gas associated with incomplete combustion.

Some pollutants enter the atmosphere directly, while others react with existing atmospheric chemicals to form secondary pollutants. These reactions can increase pollution even at locations far from the original emission source.

Major Industrial Sources of City Smog

Several industrial activities can contribute to urban air pollution, particularly when emissions are not properly controlled.

1. Thermal Power Plants

Coal-fired power plants can release particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. The quantity of emissions depends on fuel quality, plant operations, and the effectiveness of installed pollution-control systems.

Technologies such as electrostatic precipitators, flue-gas desulphurisation systems, and appropriate combustion controls can help reduce specific pollutants when correctly designed and operated.

2. Cement and Steel Industries

Cement manufacturing involves crushing, grinding, kiln operations, and material transportation. These activities can generate dust and combustion-related emissions.

Steel plants and foundries can release particulate matter from furnaces, metal processing, and material handling. Suitable filtration, exhaust collection, and regular equipment maintenance are important for controlling these emissions.

3. Brick Kilns

Brick manufacturing requires significant heat, and emissions vary according to kiln design, fuel, and operating practices. Older or inefficient kilns may release substantial particulate matter and other combustion pollutants.

Modern kiln technologies, permitted cleaner fuels, and improved operating practices can help reduce their environmental impact.

4. Diesel Generator Sets

Diesel generator (DG) sets provide backup electricity to factories, hospitals, offices, commercial buildings, and other facilities. Diesel combustion can release particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons.

Although individual generator sets are smaller than large power plants, multiple units operating across a city can contribute to local pollution. Appropriate maintenance and emission-control technology are therefore important parts of responsible generator operation.

How Industrial Emissions Create Smog

Industrial emissions contribute to smog through several atmospheric processes.

Formation of Fine Particles

Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can react with other substances in the atmosphere to form secondary particulate matter. These fine particles can remain airborne and travel over considerable distances.

Photochemical Smog

Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds can react in the presence of sunlight to produce ground-level ozone. This type of pollution is commonly associated with photochemical smog and can be harmful to people and vegetation.

Weather and Pollution Accumulation

During periods of low wind speed or temperature inversion, pollutants may not disperse effectively. In winter, these conditions can allow emissions from industries, vehicles, and other sources to accumulate near ground level.

Industrial pollution is not the only cause of city smog. Traffic exhaust, road dust, construction activities, and seasonal burning can also contribute. Their relative importance varies according to location, season, and atmospheric conditions.

Health and Environmental Effects

Industrial air pollution can affect both people and the surrounding environment.

Respiratory health: Exposure to particulate matter and certain gases can irritate the airways and worsen existing respiratory conditions.

Cardiovascular health: Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter is associated with increased cardiovascular risks.

Reduced visibility: High concentrations of airborne particles can create haze, affecting visibility and making travel more difficult.

Damage to vegetation: Some pollutants can affect plant growth, while deposited particles may contaminate nearby surfaces and soil, depending on their composition.

Impact on businesses: Poor air quality can increase cleaning and maintenance requirements, affect outdoor working conditions, and create additional environmental management costs.

Children, older adults, outdoor workers, and people with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions may be particularly vulnerable during periods of elevated pollution.

Effective Ways to Control Industrial Emissions

Reducing industrial pollution requires a combination of technology, maintenance, monitoring, and responsible operating practices.

1. Install Suitable Pollution-Control Equipment

Industries should select equipment according to the pollutants produced by their operations. Bag filters and electrostatic precipitators can help control particulate emissions, while scrubbers and other treatment systems may be suitable for specific gaseous pollutants.

The effectiveness of any system depends on proper design, installation, operation, and maintenance.

2. Improve Fuel and Energy Efficiency

Using permitted cleaner fuels and improving energy efficiency can reduce certain emissions. Regular servicing of boilers, furnaces, and engines can also help maintain efficient combustion and identify operational problems.

3. Monitor Industrial Emissions

Some designated industrial facilities are required to use Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to measure specified pollutants and transmit data to regulatory authorities. Such systems can help identify unusual emission levels and support compliance monitoring.

Facilities should ensure that monitoring instruments are maintained and operated according to applicable requirements.

4. Reduce Industrial Dust

Enclosed conveyors, covered material storage, local exhaust ventilation, and suitable filtration can reduce dust from industrial handling and processing. Regular housekeeping can also prevent accumulated material from becoming airborne again.

5. Maintain Diesel Generator Sets

Generator owners should follow recommended maintenance schedules and applicable emission standards. Where required, suitable approved or certified Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs) may help reduce particulate emissions from eligible existing DG sets.

Businesses should verify the requirements applicable to their location, generator category, and operating conditions before selecting a solution.

6. Strengthen Environmental Management

Industries should maintain equipment records, conduct inspections, train employees, and investigate abnormal monitoring results. Clear responsibility for pollution prevention makes it easier to identify problems and implement corrective action.

Industrial Pollution Regulations in India

India's industrial pollution-control framework includes environmental legislation, prescribed emission standards, consent conditions, and directions issued by relevant authorities.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards have important roles in pollution monitoring and enforcement. Requirements differ across industries and locations, so businesses should consult the current rules applicable to their operations.

In Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) may issue additional directions to address severe air pollution, including restrictions that affect certain industrial activities or diesel generator operations under applicable circumstances.

Building Cleaner and More Sustainable Cities

Reducing industrial emissions requires cooperation between businesses, regulators, local authorities, and communities. Industries can contribute by adopting appropriate pollution-control technologies, improving energy efficiency, maintaining equipment, and complying with environmental requirements.

vehicular emissions and their contribution to urban pollutionUrban air pollution must also be addressed through coordinated action across other sources. For example, demonstrate why controlling only one source is not enough to improve city air quality.

By treating pollution prevention as an essential part of industrial operations, businesses can support healthier communities while maintaining efficient and responsible production.

Conclusion

Industrial emissions are an important contributor to urban air pollution and can worsen smog through direct particle release and atmospheric chemical reactions. Power plants, cement factories, brick kilns, steel facilities, and diesel generator sets may all contribute, although their impact varies by location and operating conditions.

Effective pollution control depends on suitable treatment equipment, cleaner permitted fuels, regular maintenance, reliable monitoring, and compliance with current regulations. Consistent action by industries and public authorities can help improve air quality and support more sustainable urban development.
