Buying a used Retrofit Emission Control Device can appear attractive when the goal is to control the cost of upgrading an existing diesel generator. A second-hand RECD may have a lower purchase price than a new unit, but price alone should not determine whether it is a sensible choice. The device's certification, previous operating history, condition, compatibility, and remaining service life all matter.

CPCB's RECD testing procedureAn RECD is not simply a piece of exhaust hardware. It is part of an emission-control system whose applicability is connected to the diesel engine and its rated power range. The describes the framework for emission-compliance testing of retrofit devices for diesel power-generating-set engines up to 800 kW gross mechanical power.

Why a Used RECD Looks Attractive

The biggest advantage of a used device is the possibility of a lower upfront cost. A facility may already have an older DG set and may want to meet applicable emission-control requirements without making a larger investment in a new generator or new retrofit equipment.

However, the purchase price is only one part of the calculation.

A second-hand unit may require inspection, cleaning, repairs, new gaskets, mounting modifications, transportation, installation, and commissioning. If its internal filter or catalyst has already experienced significant operating hours, the remaining useful life may also be substantially lower than that of a new device.

"How cheap is the used RECD?""What will the complete installation cost, and what level of performance and support will remain after installation?"The important question is therefore not but

First Check: Identify Exactly What You Are Buying

The term "used RECD" can describe several different situations. The device could have been removed from an old generator, taken off a machine that was upgraded, used as a demonstration unit, stored as surplus, or refurbished by a third party.

These situations carry different levels of risk.

Before travelling to inspect a unit, ask the seller for:

Manufacturer and exact model
Serial number and identification plate
Original purchase invoice
Original installation or commissioning records
Certification or test documentation
Generator make, model and rated power on which it was previously installed
Operating hours, if available
Maintenance and cleaning history
Reason why the unit is being sold

CPCB's published list of certified RECD manufacturersThe shows that certified devices have specified applicability ranges for in-use diesel genset engines.

That means you should never assume that a used device is suitable simply because its physical dimensions appear correct.

Match the RECD to Your Generator

Compatibility is one of the most important checks.

Start with the engine's gross mechanical power rather than relying only on the generator's kVA rating. Compare your engine's nameplate information with the applicable range shown in the RECD documentation.

You should also compare:

Engine make and model
Rated power
Exhaust flow
Exhaust temperature
Maximum permissible back-pressure
Exhaust-pipe dimensions
Inlet and outlet configuration
Installation space

A device that was previously installed successfully on another generator may still be unsuitable for your engine.

Aceget's own guidance on transferring an RECD to another diesel generator similarly highlights the need to collect the receiving engine's make, model, rated power, back-pressure limit, exhaust dimensions, and other installation details before considering relocation.

Check the Physical Condition

Documentation is only the first stage. A used RECD should be physically inspected before money changes hands.

Look carefully at the housing for:

Cracks or damaged welds
Heavy corrosion
Bulging or heat-damaged sections
Fresh paint covering repairs
Damaged flanges
Missing brackets
Damaged sensor ports
Distorted inlet or outlet connections

The internal element also deserves attention. Cracked, melted, heavily contaminated, or damaged substrate material can turn an apparently inexpensive purchase into an expensive replacement project.

Oil contamination is another warning sign. If the previous engine consumed excessive lubricating oil or had serious combustion problems, the emission-control device may have suffered as a result.

Previous Operating Hours Matter

A used RECD does not have an unlimited life.

Operating hours, duty cycle, exhaust temperature, ash accumulation, maintenance practices, and engine condition can all influence its remaining performance.

This is why asking only for the manufacturing date is not enough. A relatively old device with limited operating hours and excellent storage conditions may be in better condition than a newer device that has operated continuously under demanding conditions.

If the seller cannot provide any operating or maintenance history, treat the unknown history as a financial risk rather than assuming the device has plenty of life remaining.

Certification Is More Important Than Appearance

A used RECD can look almost new after cleaning and repainting while still presenting a documentation problem.

The important question is whether the specific device can be traced to its manufacturer, model, serial number, and applicable certification.

The CPCB procedure establishes emission-compliance testing requirements for RECDs, while the CPCB's certified-manufacturer list identifies devices according to applicable engine-power ranges.

Therefore, keep copies of the original documentation and compare the identification plate on the physical device with the paperwork.

If the serial number is missing, altered, unreadable, or inconsistent with the documents, that should be treated as a major warning sign.

Don't Forget Exhaust Back-Pressure

An RECD adds resistance to an engine's exhaust system. A used unit may already have accumulated deposits or suffered internal damage that increases this resistance.

Before installation, confirm the engine manufacturer's allowable exhaust back-pressure and determine whether the proposed device can operate within that limit.

This is particularly important when moving a device from one generator to another. Even if the power ratings look similar, exhaust-flow characteristics and installation geometry can be different.

A proper installation should establish a baseline after commissioning so future changes in back-pressure can be identified during maintenance.

Calculate the Real Cost

Suppose a used RECD appears substantially cheaper than a new unit. The comparison should include more than the purchase price.

Consider:

Total used cost = purchase price + inspection + transport + repairs/cleaning + adapters + installation + testing + contingency for early replacement

Compare that figure with the complete cost of a new, supported device.

For example, a used unit that saves money initially may lose its advantage if it requires extensive cleaning, new mounting arrangements, replacement components, and additional installation work.

This is why a large discount on the seller's quotation does not automatically mean a good deal.

Where the Used Option May Make Sense

A used RECD can be worth considering when several conditions are satisfied.

For example, the unit may be more attractive if:

The manufacturer and serial number are clearly traceable.
Original certification documents are available.
The approved power range matches your engine.
The previous generator is similar to yours.
Operating and maintenance history is available.
The physical inspection shows no serious damage.
A qualified installer is willing to inspect and install it.
The total installed cost is meaningfully lower than a new unit.
The seller provides reasonable written terms.

An unused surplus device with complete original documentation can also be a different proposition from a heavily operated second-hand unit.

When Buying New Is Safer

There are situations where saving money on a used RECD may not justify the risk.

Buying new is generally the safer route when the generator is critical to operations, the compliance deadline is close, documentation is incomplete, or the used device's operating history cannot be established.

The same is true when the generator is still under an OEM warranty or when the installation requires significant modification.

In such situations, having a supplier responsible for device selection, installation, commissioning, documentation, and after-sales support can provide considerably more certainty.

NCR Users Should Check the Applicable Rules

For facilities in Delhi-NCR, regulatory requirements deserve particular attention because CAQM has issued directions governing the use of DG sets and emission-control arrangements.

CAQM's directions have included requirements concerning RECDs for certain in-use DG sets, including minimum particulate-capture performance requirements and certification through authorised testing agencies in specified circumstances.

CAQM directions archiveThe is useful for checking the applicable regulatory documents rather than relying on an old seller's understanding of the rules.

Because requirements can change by location, generator capacity, operating conditions, and regulatory direction, buyers should verify the current requirements applicable to their specific installation.

A Simple Used-RECD Inspection Checklist

Before making a purchase, verify these points:

Is the manufacturer identifiable?
Does the serial number match the documentation?
Is the certification documentation available?
Does the approved range cover your engine?
Do the source and receiving engines have compatible specifications?
Is the housing free from serious damage?
Is the internal substrate intact?
Is there evidence of oil or fuel contamination?
Is the operating history available?
Is the back-pressure requirement understood?
Will a qualified installer accept the device?
Is the complete installed cost genuinely lower than a new unit?

If several answers are uncertain, the apparent bargain deserves much more scrutiny.

Conclusion

is buying a used RECD for DG Set a sensible option? So, It can be, but only when the device's identity, certification, compatibility, condition, history, and installation requirements can all be verified.

A low purchase price should never be the main reason for choosing a second-hand emission-control device. An RECD is ultimately part of a compliance and exhaust system, so documentation and technical suitability are just as important as the hardware itself.

For many critical installations, a new device with clear certification, proper installation, warranty, and technical support may provide better long-term value. A used unit becomes worth considering when it has a traceable history, matches the receiving generator, passes a proper inspection, and delivers a meaningful saving even after all additional costs are included.
