Retrofit Emission Control Device Selecting the right (RECD) vendor is an important decision for industries operating diesel generator sets. An RECD is not simply an exhaust component that can be selected based on price or availability. The suitability of the system depends on factors such as generator specifications, engine configuration, emission requirements, installation conditions, testing procedures, and ongoing technical support.

A well-planned vendor selection process can help industries avoid compatibility issues and make the installation and performance-evaluation process more organized. Before choosing a supplier, it is therefore useful to review several technical and practical factors.

Check RECD Compatibility With the DG Set

The first step is to determine whether the proposed RECD is suitable for the particular diesel generator. Important details may include engine make and model, rated power, operating condition, exhaust configuration, and applicable genset phase or category.

A vendor should be able to explain how its proposed system matches the generator's technical characteristics. Industries should avoid selecting an RECD based only on the generator's kVA rating without reviewing the complete technical requirements.

Review Certification and Compliance Information

Certification and compliance documentation should be an important part of vendor evaluation. Buyers should request relevant technical documents and verify whether the proposed RECD is applicable to their generator and operating conditions.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) CPCB official RECD vendor listThe publishes an official list of manufacturers certified for RECDs applicable to different ranges of in-use diesel genset engines. Buyers can use the as one reference when reviewing vendor and certification information.

It is still important to verify the specific capacity range, engine phase, certification agency, and other applicable details rather than assuming that every RECD is suitable for every diesel generator.

Understand the Testing and Certification Framework

Testing and certification information can provide useful technical context when comparing RECD vendors. A prospective supplier should be able to explain what testing has been carried out, which certification or testing agency is involved, and what documentation is available.

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) official genset certification resourcesThe provides official information on genset certification, including procedures and requirements relating to diesel genset engines up to 800 kW. Its can be useful when buyers want to understand the broader testing and certification framework.

Using authoritative technical resources alongside vendor documentation can help buyers ask more informed questions during the selection process.

Evaluate the Vendor's Installation Experience

Installation is another major factor to consider. Even a technically suitable RECD needs to be installed correctly for reliable operation.

Ask the vendor about its experience with similar diesel generator models and applications. Previous installation experience can help identify practical issues related to exhaust routing, available space, mounting arrangements, connections, and system accessibility.

A professional vendor should also be able to explain the installation procedure, expected installation requirements, and any modifications that may be necessary.

Ask for Relevant Installation References

References from previous projects can provide useful insight into a vendor's practical capabilities. Instead of asking only how many systems the company has supplied, industries can ask for references involving similar generator capacities, engine types, or operating environments.

Project references can help buyers understand how the vendor handled installation, commissioning, testing, documentation, and post-installation support.

how to evaluate RECD vendors, references, and installation requirementsFor a more detailed approach to checking vendor references and installation considerations, industries can also review.

Compare Technical Support and Documentation

Technical support should not be overlooked when selecting an RECD vendor. The supplier should ideally provide clear documentation covering installation, operation, maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting.

Ask whether the vendor provides installation drawings, technical specifications, maintenance recommendations, test reports, and other relevant documents. Clear documentation can make it easier for facility teams to understand the system and maintain proper records.

Consider Performance Testing

A reliable RECD project should include a clear approach to performance evaluation. Buyers should understand how emission measurements will be conducted and what parameters will be considered.

Depending on the applicable requirements and testing plan, parameters may include particulate matter and other relevant exhaust-emission measurements. Before-and-after testing can also help establish a baseline and assess changes after installation.

The testing procedure should be clearly defined rather than discussed only after the system has been installed.

Use Standards and Technical References

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Know Your Standard portalWhen evaluating technical claims, it is useful to consult authoritative sources rather than relying entirely on promotional material. The provides a where users can search Indian Standards by standard number or keyword and access related information.

For an RECD project, such official reference resources can help procurement and technical teams understand applicable standards and documentation requirements relevant to their broader project.

Review After-Sales Service

An RECD is part of an operating exhaust system, so after-sales support can be important over its service life. Before placing an order, ask about maintenance support, inspection schedules, replacement components, troubleshooting assistance, and response procedures.

A vendor offering clear service support can be easier to work with when maintenance or technical issues arise later.

Do Not Select a Vendor Based Only on Price

Price is naturally an important consideration, but it should not be the only selection criterion. A lower initial quotation may not represent the lowest overall project cost if installation, testing, maintenance, documentation, or technical support are inadequate.

Instead, buyers can compare vendors based on technical suitability, certification documentation, installation capability, testing support, warranty terms, service response, and total project requirements.

Create a Vendor Evaluation Checklist

Before finalizing a vendor, industries can create a simple checklist covering generator compatibility, applicable capacity range, certification information, installation experience, project references, testing arrangements, documentation, warranty, maintenance, and after-sales support.

This approach allows different suppliers to be compared on similar criteria instead of making a decision based primarily on price or sales presentations.

Conclusion

Choosing an RECD vendor requires more than comparing quotations. Industries should evaluate compatibility with the diesel generator, certification and compliance documentation, installation experience, project references, testing procedures, technical support, and after-sales service.

A structured vendor-evaluation process can reduce the risk of selecting an unsuitable system and make installation planning more efficient. By combining vendor-provided technical information with reliable official resources such as CPCB, ARAI, and BIS, DG set owners can make better-informed decisions when selecting an RECD solution for their facility.
