In precision instrumentation, a calibration certificate is only as credible as the framework backing it. For companies operating in Singapore's regulated and export-oriented industries, that framework is typically the Singapore Accreditation Council's Singapore Laboratory Accreditation Scheme — commonly known as SINGLAS, or more formally today as SAC-SINGLAS. Understanding how this accreditation system works, and how it connects to practical tools like the low pressure calibration pump, matters for any organisation that needs its pressure measurements to hold up under audit. TIS Instruments (S) Pte Ltd (tiscalibrator.com), a Singapore-based manufacturer of precision pressure measuring and calibration equipment since 1999, sits at the intersection of both — designing the physical tools used in calibration work, while aligning its calibration services with references traceable to recognised national and international standards.

What SINGLAS Calibration Actually Means

SINGLAS is the accreditation scheme operated under the Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC), Singapore's national body responsible for independently accrediting testing, calibration, inspection, and certification bodies to internationally recognised standards such as ISO/IEC 17025. A laboratory accredited under SAC-SINGLAS has demonstrated, through independent assessment, that its calibration processes, equipment, and record-keeping meet a defined international quality benchmark — which matters enormously for companies whose products or processes are later audited, exported, or subject to regulatory review.

For a business sourcing calibration services, this distinction is not just bureaucratic box-ticking. A calibration certificate issued by an accredited laboratory carries recognised weight during an ISO 9000 audit, a customer quality review, or an export compliance check, in a way that an uncertified in-house measurement simply doesn't. This is why traceability — the documented chain connecting a specific measurement back to a recognised national or international standard — sits at the heart of any credible calibration programme.

TIS Instruments positions its calibration services around exactly this principle, using references traceable to national or international standards bodies including NIST (the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology) and NPL (the UK's National Physical Laboratory). SINGLAS Calibration Businesses evaluating any calibration provider — TIS included — should always confirm the specific accreditation status and scope relevant to their own compliance requirements directly with the provider, since accreditation scopes can vary by instrument type and measurement range.

Why Low Pressure Calibration Demands Specialised Equipment

Low pressure measurement is widely regarded as one of the more technically demanding areas of calibration work. At higher pressure ranges, small measurement discrepancies are often negligible; at the low end of the scale, the same absolute discrepancy can represent a much larger proportional error. This makes the tools used for low pressure calibration especially important — a general-purpose pump designed for mid- or high-range work simply isn't precise enough to generate and control the fine pressure increments needed at the low end.

This is the specific problem TIS Instruments' low pressure calibration pumps are engineered to solve. The company's Automatic Portable Low Differential Pressure Calibrator (APC150-LP) is purpose-built to automatically generate and control low differential pressures in a portable, field-ready form factor — allowing technicians to carry out precise low pressure calibration work outside of a fixed lab environment, without sacrificing the accuracy a stationary system would offer.

Connecting Equipment Quality to Accreditation Outcomes

There's a direct, practical link between the equipment used for calibration and the credibility of the resulting calibration record. A calibration performed with an imprecise or poorly maintained pump — however carefully documented — cannot produce results that meet accredited-laboratory standards. This is why organisations pursuing or maintaining SAC-SINGLAS accreditation, or working with accredited third-party laboratories, need calibration equipment engineered specifically for the pressure range and precision level required, rather than general-purpose tools adapted for the job.

TIS Instruments' broader calibrator product line — spanning digital pressure gauges, automatic and electric pump pressure calibrators, and specialised low pressure equipment like the APC150-LP — reflects this need, offering a wide and complete range designed to help customers fulfil ISO 9000 and related quality requirements across different pressure ranges and applications.

Choosing Equipment and Services That Support Your Compliance Needs

For organisations weighing calibration equipment purchases or calibration service providers, the key questions are consistent: Is the calibration reference traceable to a recognised national or international standard? Is the equipment precise enough for the specific pressure range being measured, particularly at the low end of the scale? And does the provider's documentation and accreditation scope actually match what your own compliance framework requires? Getting these details right up front avoids costly compliance gaps discovered later during an audit.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is SINGLAS, and why does it matter for calibration? SINGLAS (now SAC-SINGLAS) is Singapore's national laboratory accreditation scheme, run by the Singapore Accreditation Council, recognising testing and calibration laboratories that meet international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025.

2. Why is low pressure calibration considered more technically demanding than higher pressure ranges? Small absolute measurement errors represent a much larger proportional error at low pressure ranges, requiring more precise, purpose-built equipment to generate and control fine pressure changes accurately.

3. What is the APC150-LP used for? It's an Automatic Portable Low Differential Pressure Calibrator designed to automatically generate and control low differential pressures in a portable, field-ready format.

4. Are TIS Instruments' calibration references traceable to recognised standards? Yes, TIS states its calibration services use references traceable to national or international standards bodies, including NIST and NPL.

5. Should I confirm a calibration provider's specific accreditation before relying on their certificates for an audit? Yes, accreditation scopes vary by instrument type and range, so it's important to confirm directly with any provider that their accreditation covers your specific compliance requirements.

6. Does TIS Instruments manufacture its own calibration equipment or only offer calibration services? Both — TIS designs and manufactures its own precision pressure calibration instruments, including low pressure calibrators, while also offering calibration services for pressure and temperature instruments.
