Popular Regions for Motorbike Tours in India

The Himalayas

Himalayan motorcycle toursLadakh, Spiti and Kashmir offer high passes, monasteries and dramatic valleys. This is the most challenging region, and also the most rewarding. Royal Bike Riders runs several routes under its collection.

Rajasthan

Forts, palaces and desert roads make this a great choice for first-time tourers. The roads are generally wide and the pace is relaxed, though heat needs attention.

South India

Tea estates, spice hills, coastal roads and temple towns. Expect curves, greenery and a gentler pace.

Coastal Routes

Sea breeze, fishing villages and easy cruising. A good option for riders who prefer scenery over technical challenge.

Best Time to Ride

India has no single riding season, so it depends on where you go:

Himalayas: Roughly June to September, when the high passes are open.
Rajasthan and central India: Generally October to March, when the weather is cooler.
South India and the coast: Usually the drier, cooler months, avoiding peak monsoon.

Weather changes from year to year, so confirm current conditions with your operator before travelling.

Choosing the Right Motorcycle

Match the bike to the terrain:

Mountains: Torque-rich, rugged and easy to repair.
Desert and highways: Stable and comfortable for long hours.
Hills and forests: Light and easy to handle on bends.

Royal Enfield motorcycles are popular across India because they are sturdy, relaxed to ride and familiar to mechanics in many towns. Remember that engines lose some power at altitude, so ride smoothly and use lower gears on climbs.

Skills and Fitness

You do not need to be an expert. You should be comfortable with a manual gearbox, smooth braking and riding for several hours a day. A few long weekend rides before your trip will help a lot, and some regular cardio is useful if you are heading to the mountains. Be honest with your operator about your experience so they can suggest the right route.

Permits and Documents

Some regions, especially near borders and at high altitude, require permits. Rules change, so always check the latest requirements.

Carry these:

Valid driving licence
Government ID, or passport and visa
Travel and medical insurance
Vehicle papers, if you ride your own bike
Printed and digital copies of everything

Guided tours usually arrange group permits for you.

Weather and Altitude

Mountain weather can swing from sunny to freezing within hours, while desert regions can be very hot. On high-altitude routes, give your body time to adjust:

Take rest days early in the trip.
Drink water regularly.
Avoid alcohol in the first few days.
Speak to your doctor about preventive options.

If you develop a worsening headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual breathlessness, tell your group leader immediately.

What to Pack

Certified helmet, armoured jacket, gloves, boots and knee guards
Layers: thermals, fleece and a waterproof outer shell for the mountains
Breathable gear and extra water for hot regions
Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm
First-aid kit, personal medication and a power bank
A soft duffel bag instead of a hard suitcase

Pack light. Extra weight makes the bike harder to handle.

Safety Tips

Start early and avoid riding after dark.
Expect cattle, potholes and sudden stops on Indian roads.
Keep a safe gap from trucks and buses.
Slow down on blind corners.
Take regular breaks and stay hydrated.
Ride your own pace and follow your road captain.
Respect local customs and carry out your rubbish.

How to Plan Your Trip

Pick a region that suits your experience and interests.
Match your dates to the right season.
Decide between a guided tour and an independent ride.
Add buffer days for weather and rest.
