motorcycle tour to HimalayasAsk any rider what they brought home from the mountains, and the answer is usually photographs: a pass half-hidden in clouds, a lake that changes colour by the hour, a row of prayer flags snapping in the wind. A gives you more worth capturing than almost any other journey, and also some of the hardest conditions for doing it well.

It's written for ordinary riders with a phone or a modest camera, not professionals. For current itineraries and dates, see the Royal Bike Riders.

Safety Comes Before Every Photograph

never take photos while riding. Before anything else, a rule: Mountain roads leave no room for distraction. Blind corners, loose gravel and oncoming trucks can turn a glance at your phone into an accident.

Stop only in safe, visible places, away from bends and narrow sections
Pull completely off the road, and don't stand in the carriageway
Switch off the engine and put the bike on its stand properly
Keep an eye on traffic when you step away from the bike
Respect your group's schedule, since long photo stops can leave you riding late in the day

If the group is moving and the light is perfect, let it go. Another view will come.

The Best Light in the Mountains

Light shapes mountain photography more than any equipment.

Early morning. Soft, low sun, clear air and almost no traffic. Peaks glow and lakes are often at their calmest. It's also when you're already riding, so keep an eye out for a good spot.

Midday. Harsh and flat. Colours can look washed out, but deep-blue skies and bright lake water can still work well. Use it for details and portraits rather than landscapes.

Late afternoon. Warm light returns, shadows lengthen and textures stand out. This is a good time for villages, monasteries and roads.

Dusk and night. Cold, quiet and full of potential. High-altitude skies can be spectacular on clear nights, though shooting stars needs patience, steady support and warm hands.

Plan to be at your stay before dark. Photography should never push you into riding late.

Places Worth Photographing

Most Himalayan itineraries pass through landscapes that photograph well. Some popular ones:

High passes and roadside viewpoints, with winding roads, prayer flags and sweeping valleys
Nubra Valley, with sand dunes, green fields and distant peaks
Pangong Lake, where colour shifts from pale blue to deep turquoise
Tso Moriri and Tso Kar, quieter lakes with a remote atmosphere
Monasteries such as Thiksey, Hemis, Diskit, Lamayuru and Alchi, for architecture, colour and detail
Leh's old town, for street scenes and everyday life
Roads themselves, especially hairpins and long straights through empty valleys

Ask your road captain about good spots on the day's route. Local knowledge often reveals views you wouldn't find on your own.

Choosing Your Equipment

You don't need a bag of lenses.

Smartphone

Modern phones handle landscapes, video and low light well. Carry a lens cloth, because dust and fingerprints are the main enemies of image quality.

Compact or mirrorless camera

If you carry a dedicated camera, choose something compact. A versatile zoom lens covers most situations, so you rarely need to swap lenses in dusty conditions.

Action camera

Useful for helmet or handlebar footage, though mounts must be secure and legal where you ride. Check your battery life, since cold drains it quickly.

Accessories worth bringing

Spare batteries and a power bank
Extra memory cards
A small, flexible tripod or phone mount for stable shots
A lens cloth and a small air blower
A dry bag or padded case

Keep gear light. Every extra kilo on the bike is felt on rough roads.

Protecting Gear from Dust, Cold and Vibration

The mountains are tough on electronics.

Dust. It gets everywhere. Keep equipment in sealed bags, change lenses indoors if possible and wipe gently.

Cold. Batteries lose charge quickly in low temperatures. Keep spares in an inner pocket close to your body, and swap them when needed.

Moisture. Moving between cold air and warm rooms can cause condensation. Let your gear adjust slowly inside a closed bag before unpacking.

Vibration. Motorcycle vibration can damage some camera mounts and affect phone camera stabilisation. Avoid mounting a phone on the handlebar for long rides.

Water. Meltwater crossings and sudden rain happen. Carry waterproof cases or dry bags.

Photography Tips That Actually Help

Include the bike. A motorcycle on an empty road gives scale and story. Park it safely and shoot from a distance.

Use leading lines. Winding roads, rivers and fences naturally pull the eye through an image.

Look for scale. A rider, a monastery or a small vehicle against a huge landscape shows how big the mountains are.

Shoot details. Prayer flags, painted doors, hands holding hot tea and frost on a seat tell the story as well as wide views.

Watch the horizon. A tilted horizon spoils many landscape images. Most phone cameras offer a grid.

Mind your exposure. Snow and bright skies can fool the camera. Tap to adjust, or lower exposure slightly to keep detail.

Take a moment. Stand still, look around and then raise the camera. Rushed shots rarely stand out.

Take fewer, better photos. Hundreds of near-identical images are tiring to sort through later.

Photographing People and Culture Respectfully

Ladakh and Spiti are home to communities who live there year-round, and many sites are active places of worship.

Always ask before photographing people, especially monks, elders and children
Accept a refusal with a smile
Observe whether photography is allowed inside monasteries and prayer halls, since rules vary
Don't use flash in religious spaces
Dress modestly and remove shoes where asked
Avoid blocking doorways or interrupting ceremonies
Share photos with people if they ask, and thank them

A simple greeting and a few minutes of conversation often lead to better photographs than a quick snap from a distance.

Drones and Restricted Areas

Rules about drones and photography in sensitive or border regions can be strict and can change. In some areas, photographing military installations, bridges or certain infrastructure is not permitted. Check the current regulations with your operator or local authorities before flying a drone, and follow any instructions given at checkpoints. Ignoring restrictions can lead to fines, confiscation or worse.

Capturing the Journey, Not Just the Scenery

Some of the best memories aren't landscapes.

The group lined up at a pass, helmets off
Breakfast steaming in the cold morning air
A mechanic checking a bike at the roadside
The first sight of Pangong from a ridge
A tired but happy face at the end of a long day
Your own gloves, boots and helmet in the dust

A short video clip of the road, the sound of the engine and a view panning across a valley can be worth more than a dozen photographs. Keep clips short, steady and varied.

Keeping Your Memories Safe

Back up daily. If your phone has cloud backup, use it when you reach Wi-Fi. If not, copy files to a power bank with storage or a separate memory card.
Don't delete on the road. Wait until you're home to sort through images.
Carry spare cards. Running out of space at a viewpoint is frustrating.
Charge at every opportunity. Power cuts and limited sockets are common in remote areas.
Label key photos. A quick note on location and date helps later.

Remember that mobile coverage is patchy, so don't rely on instant uploads.

What to Wear and Carry While Shooting

Cold hands are the biggest enemy of photography on a high pass. Use thin glove liners under your riding gloves, which you can remove briefly to operate controls, or try touchscreen-compatible liners. Wear layers so that you stay warm while standing still at viewpoints, since you cool down quickly once the engine is off.

Pack essentials: certified helmet, armoured jacket and trousers, gloves, ankle-covering boots, waterproof layer, thermal base layers, a fleece, neck gaiter, sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses. Royal Bike Riders also publishes a riding-kit page to help you plan your gear.

Best Time for a Photogenic Trip

June to SeptemberThe main riding window runs from roughly , when high passes are generally open. Early season offers snow-lined roads and dramatic skies. July and August bring the most reliable access, with green valleys and clear days, though approach roads can see monsoon rain. September often brings crisp air, soft light and fewer crowds. Pass opening dates change each year, so confirm current conditions before you book.
