If you wanted stability, you locked your dram into a fixed-term certificate of deposit; if you had surplus capital, you bought bricks and mortar in Yerevan.

The Trading Engine: What Is the AMX?

At the core of the local ecosystem sits the Armenia Securities Exchange (AMX). Located in Yerevan, the AMX provides the regulated electronic trading floor where government institutions, commercial banks, private enterprises, and retail investors meet.

Cbonds

Unlike massive international stock exchanges that host thousands of tech giants and multinationals, the AMX is defined primarily by its debt market. While public equities exist, the volume and daily liquidity on the exchange are heavily driven by sovereign debt auctions and corporate bond issues.

Exploring the Core Instruments

1. Government Treasury Bonds (The Bedrock)

Why they appeal: They carry the highest credit backing in the jurisdiction and represent the benchmark risk-free rate for the Armenian Dram (AMD).
Maturity spectrum: You will find short-term Treasury bills (ranging from several weeks to one year) as well as medium- and long-term coupon bonds with maturities stretching out several decades.

Cbonds

The payoff: They distribute semi-annual coupon payments, offering predictable, fixed income that frequently competes with or outpaces typical commercial bank deposit rates.

2. Corporate Bonds

Corporate debt has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the local exchange. Commercial banks, microfinance companies, and real-economy enterprises regularly issue bonds on the AMX to fund operational growth.

Currency variety: Corporate bonds are commonly issued in AMD as well as foreign currencies such as USD or EUR. This gives investors an avenue to earn coupon yield without exposing their base capital to domestic currency fluctuations.
Risk vs. Yield: Corporate issues carry higher yields than government paper to compensate for credit and default risks. Stick to established, audited issuers with strong balance sheets.

3. Domestic Equities (Stocks)

The equities segment in Armenia is still in an emerging phase. While a select group of commercial banks, financial organizations, and domestic enterprises have public listings, shares trade with noticeably lower liquidity than bonds.

Holding local stocks can provide dividend income and long-term exposure to Armenia’s growing financial sector, but entering and exiting equity positions requires patience and realistic expectations regarding market depth.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Your First Investment

Getting started on the AMX does not require institutional connections. The onboarding process is structured around four clear steps:

Select an Authorized Intermediary:

Individual retail investors do not trade directly on the exchange floor; you trade through a licensed broker or an investment bank supervised by the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA). Several leading Armenian banks and independent brokerage houses offer brokerage desks with dedicated digital interfaces.

Open Your Securities Custody Account:

Your broker will set up your trading profile and link it to an individual securities account at the Central Depository of Armenia (CDA). You will need your passport, social services number (or local public services number), and tax identification information.

Fund Your Trading Balance:

Because your brokerage account connects with local clearing rails, funding your balance via local bank transfer in AMD or USD is generally quick, settling directly without costly foreign intermediary wire hops.

Execute and Monitor:

You can place orders during AMX trading hours through your broker’s trading platform or web interface. Once filled, your holdings reflect in your account, and incoming coupon payments or dividends flow straight to your linked cash balance. You can also track your official holdings directly via the CDA’s online investor portal.

Practical Considerations for Beginners

Match duration to your liquidity needs: Bond prices fluctuate inversely with interest rate cycles. If you buy a five-year bond, plan on holding it to maturity or ensure there is sufficient secondary market demand if you need early cash liquidity.
Keep multi-currency accounts ready: Keeping balances in both AMD and USD allows you to participate in primary bond distributions without incurring urgent, unfavorable currency conversions.
Understand local tax treatment: Certain domestic government securities and qualified publicly listed bonds benefit from favorable local tax rules regarding interest income. Always confirm current tax reporting obligations with your broker or tax advisor.

Starting out does not require overhauling your entire financial life. Allocating a modest sum into a dependable sovereign or corporate issue allows you to experience the settlement process, track recurring coupon flows, and build firsthand confidence in the local financial ecosystem.
