When choosing worms for gardening, fishing, or composting, it's important to understand that different worms have different habits. Night crawler worms are commonly known for their larger size and their ability to thrive in soil. They can be useful in several situations, but they aren't always the same type of worm used in small vermicomposting bins.

Understanding where these worms live, what they eat, and how to care for them can help you choose the right worms for your needs.

What Are Night Crawler Worms?

Night crawlers are larger earthworms that typically live deeper in soil than composting worms. They create tunnels as they move through the ground, which can help improve soil structure and water movement.

They are commonly recognized by their larger size compared with smaller composting worms such as Red Wigglers.

Night crawlers are often used for:

Fishing bait
Garden soil improvement
Feeding certain pets
General outdoor gardening
Soil aeration

Their natural behavior makes them particularly interesting for gardeners and anglers.

What Do Night Crawlers Eat?

Night crawlers feed on organic matter found in soil. Their diet can include decomposing plant material, leaves, and other organic matter.

If you're keeping them in a controlled environment, it's important not to overfeed them. Small amounts of suitable organic material are usually easier for worms to process.

Avoid adding large amounts of oily, salty, heavily processed, or unsuitable food.

Can Night Crawlers Be Used for Composting?

This depends on the type of night crawler and the composting system you're using.

Some night crawlers are better suited to living in soil rather than shallow worm bins. Composting worms such as Red Wigglers are generally preferred for dedicated vermicomposting systems because they naturally live in decomposing organic material near the surface.

If your goal is specifically to process kitchen scraps in a worm bin, choosing a species designed for that environment can make the setup easier to manage.

Where Can You Get Night Crawlers Worms?

Night crawlers can be found through fishing bait suppliers, gardening stores, worm farms, and specialist worm suppliers. Availability can vary depending on your location and the particular type of worm you're looking for.

Before buying, check the species and make sure it matches how you plan to use the worms.

How to Keep Night Crawlers Healthy

Keeping the right environment is important if you're maintaining night crawlers at home.

They generally need:

Moist but not waterlogged conditions
Suitable organic material
Enough space to move through the soil
Protection from extreme temperatures
Good airflow

Avoid placing their container in direct sunlight or very hot areas. Excessive heat can quickly create an unsuitable environment for worms.

Night Crawlers vs. Red Wigglers

Night crawlers and Red Wigglers are both earthworms, but they have different characteristics.

Night crawlers are generally larger and spend more time moving through soil. Red Wigglers are smaller and are more commonly used in worm bins because they prefer organic material close to the surface.

This difference is important when choosing worms for a particular purpose.

If you want to improve garden soil, night crawlers may be useful. If you're setting up a small indoor vermicomposting bin, Red Wigglers are often a more practical choice.

Can Night Crawlers Live in a Worm Bin?

Some types can be kept in containers, but the setup needs to match their natural requirements. A shallow bin designed for composting may not provide the depth that larger soil-dwelling worms prefer.

If you're keeping night crawlers, provide enough depth, moisture, and suitable bedding or soil. Avoid overcrowding the container and monitor the conditions regularly.

Tips for Handling Night Crawlers

Night crawlers are relatively easy to handle when their environment is kept comfortable.

Try to avoid exposing them to extreme heat or letting them dry out. If you're using them for fishing, keep them in a cool, shaded container with suitable bedding until they're needed.

For gardening purposes, introducing them into suitable soil gives them space to move naturally and create tunnels.

Conclusion

Night crawler worms can be useful for several purposes, including fishing, gardening, and soil improvement. However, they have different habits from composting worms, so choosing the right species for your specific goal is important.

If your main purpose is vermicomposting, a composting-specific worm such as a Red Wiggler may be more suitable. For soil-related uses or fishing, night crawlers can be a useful option when kept in the right conditions.

Understanding the differences between worm species will help you create a healthier environment and get better results from your worm-keeping setup.
