If your orthodontist has handed you a little bag of tiny rubber bands, you might be wondering what they’re for and how on earth you’re meant to put them in. It’s a common reaction. Braces rubber bands, also called orthodontic elastics, are a regular part of treatment for many people. This guide explains what they do and shares practical tips to help you feel more confident wearing them.

What Orthodontic Elastics Do

Braces function by exerting gradual pressure that causes movement of your teeth to new positions. Elastics give additional pressure on your teeth from above and below. Depending on your treatment plan, your orthodontist may choose to use elastics to direct the way your upper and lower teeth align while biting.

Everyone who wears braces does not need elastics. Some wear them for a short time, others for a long time, and some may not require them at all. It is your orthodontist who knows what will be suitable for you.

Typical Ways of Wearing Elastics

Elastics normally attach to some attachments in your braces. This varies depending on your treatment plan; hence, it is advisable to follow your orthodontist's directions and not try to emulate other people's systems.

Your orthodontist will tell you:

Which teeth the elastics attach to
How many hours a day to wear them
When to change them
What size and strength to use

It’s normal to need a few attempts before it feels natural. A little practice in front of a mirror usually helps.

Tips for Putting Elastics In

Here are some simple ideas to make it easier:

Wash your hands first. This keeps your mouth clean.
Use good lighting and a mirror. Seeing the hooks clearly makes a big difference.
Start with the back hook. Many people find it easier to attach the back end first, then stretch the elastic forward.
Open your mouth only as wide as you need. Stretching too far can make the elastic snap.
Ask for a demonstration. Your dental team can show you how, and most people find it easier after seeing it done once.

Wearing Elastics Consistently

Elastics tend to work best when they are worn as directed. Leaving them out for long stretches may slow your progress, and your orthodontist may need to adjust your plan. Results vary from person to person, so it’s best not to compare your timeline with anyone else’s.

Some people find a routine helps:

Keep a small container of spare elastics in your bag, car or school locker
Set a phone reminder to change them at the same times each day
Put a fresh set in after brushing in the morning and before bed

What to Expect in the First Few Days

When you start wearing elastics, your teeth and jaw may feel a little tender or tight. This is a common part of getting used to them. Many people find it eases as the mouth adjusts, though everyone’s experience is different.

Some gentle things that may help:

Choose softer foods, such as yoghurt, porridge, mashed vegetables and pasta
Try a cold pack on the outside of your cheek
Use orthodontic wax if a hook is rubbing your cheek or lip
Take over-the-counter pain relief only if suitable for you, following the directions on the packet, and ask your pharmacist, dentist or doctor if you’re unsure

Eating and Drinking with Elastics

Most people take their elastics out to eat, then put a fresh pair in afterwards. Your orthodontist will confirm what applies to you. Here are a few handy habits:

Take them out before meals and store them somewhere safe, not wrapped in a napkin
Brush your teeth and braces before putting new ones in
Avoid very hard, crunchy or sticky foods, which can damage braces

Always replace elastics with a fresh pair rather than reusing old ones, as they lose their stretch quickly.

Common Problems and Simple Fixes

The elastics are repeatedly breaking. This could be due to excessive opening of your mouth. Perform smaller motions, and report any repeated occurrence to your orthodontist.

You have run out of your spares. C.ontact your dental office and inquire about your supply of replacements. It is always advisable not to do without them for too long

You forgot to put them on. This occurs to many people. Just restart and report during your next visit.

You’re unsure whether you’re applying them the right way. Request an inspection during your next visit. Your dental office will gladly assist you.

Kindly refrain from using household rubber bands or hair ties as substitutes. Such materials are not suitable for oral use.

When to Contact Your Dentist or Orthodontist

Some tenderness is common with elastics. But it’s a good idea to get in touch with your dental team if you notice:

Severe or ongoing pain
A loose or broken bracket or hook
A wire poking into your cheek or gum
Sores that are getting worse
Significant swelling or signs of infection
Any concern that feels unusual

Getting Used to Elastics

Wearing braces and rubber bands can feel fiddly at first, but most people find it becomes routine with a little practice. Following your orthodontist’s instructions, keeping spare elastics handy and staying in touch with your dental team can all make the process smoother.
