Winter in Ann Arbor does not have to mean staying indoors until spring. Once snow settles across the parks, trails, hills, and neighborhoods, the Ann Arbor area becomes a playground for sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, skating, winter festivals, and simple walks through snowy woods. The key is knowing which activities match the conditions and when a beautiful winter day can quickly become a dangerous one.

Ann Arbor and surrounding Washtenaw County offer plenty of choices for different ages and experience levels. City parks provide convenient places for sledding and winter walks, while nearby county parks and recreation areas open up longer cross-country ski and snowshoe adventures. For downhill skiing and snowboarding, Mt. Brighton is within easy driving distance, and several ice-skating options provide a controlled environment when outdoor trails are icy or conditions are poor.

Before planning any outdoor adventure, always check the Ann Arbor winter storm warning today status. A calm morning can turn into blowing snow, freezing rain, poor visibility, or hazardous roads later in the day. The safest winter recreation starts with choosing the right activity for the weather rather than trying to force a plan regardless of conditions.

Skiing Near Ann Arbor

Downhill skiing is one of the easiest ways to turn a snowy forecast into an active winter day. For Ann Arbor residents, Mt. Brighton in Brighton is a particularly convenient option. The resort specifically describes itself as accessible from Ann Arbor and offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, rentals, lessons, terrain parks, and night skiing. Its current mountain information lists 25 trails, five chairlifts, seven surface lifts, and 130 acres of skiable terrain. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Mt. Brighton is also useful for beginners because visitors can take ski or snowboard lessons rather than attempting to learn entirely on their own. The resort recommends planning ahead, checking current conditions, dressing in layers, and using properly fitted equipment. Helmets are strongly recommended, while ski-school participants subject to the resort's rules may have additional helmet requirements. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Another option farther away is Alpine Valley in White Lake. It operates as a downhill ski and snowboard area and typically has a season running from around November through March, although operating hours can change with weather. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Skiing safety tips

Wear a properly fitted ski or snowboard helmet.
Use equipment appropriate for your ability and body size.
Beginners should consider professional lessons.
Stay on marked trails that match your ability level.
Take breaks before fatigue affects your balance or judgment.
Check the resort's lift, trail, weather, and operating status before leaving home.
Wear moisture-wicking layers and waterproof outer clothing.

Heavy snowfall does not automatically mean a ski day should be canceled. Ski resorts can operate during ordinary snowfall and often use snowmaking and grooming systems. The bigger concern is severe weather, poor visibility, dangerous driving conditions, freezing rain, or a storm that causes the resort to close. If travel itself becomes hazardous, staying home is the better choice.

Sledding Hills Around Ann Arbor

Sledding may be the simplest winter activity in the area: find a suitable hill, bring a sled, dress warmly, and enjoy the ride. But speed and hard-packed snow can make sledding much more dangerous than it appears.

Veterans Memorial Park has traditionally been one of Ann Arbor's recognizable sledding destinations, with two main hills that can become quite fast. Leslie Park provides another popular option, while Burns Park's well-known “Magic Mountain” offers a shorter but speedy ride. Buhr Park has smaller hills as well as a more mellow larger hill that can work well for younger or less experienced sledders. These locations are highlighted by Destination Ann Arbor's local winter recreation guide. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

For a larger county-run sledding experience, Rolling Hills County Park in Ypsilanti has a 275-foot sledding hill with a broad flat area at the bottom and fenced return paths on the sides. That layout helps separate people climbing the hill from sledders coming downhill. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

How to sled safely

Choose a hill with a clear runout area and avoid slopes that lead toward roads, parking lots, trees, fences, ponds, or other obstacles. Sitting or lying on a sled may look entertaining, but head-first riding increases the potential for serious injury. Children should be supervised, particularly on steep hills or when the surface becomes icy.

Conditions matter just as much as the hill itself. Fresh, reasonably soft snow can provide a more forgiving surface than an icy, polished slope. If freezing rain has created a hard sheet of ice, visibility is poor, or the bottom of the hill is crowded and difficult to control, it is time to stop sledding.

Ice Skating in Ann Arbor

Ice skating offers a different kind of winter recreation because it can be enjoyed in a controlled rink environment. Ann Arbor has traditionally offered both indoor and outdoor skating opportunities. The city's Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena operates seasonally, generally from November through February 28, weather permitting. Its cooled subfloor helps maintain the rink even during periods when outdoor temperatures rise. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

Yost Ice Arena is another important local skating venue, and Destination Ann Arbor also points visitors toward Chelsea's Arctic Coliseum and other nearby ice facilities. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

There is an important current-season detail for anyone planning ahead: the City of Ann Arbor says Veterans Memorial Park Indoor Ice Arena will not reopen for the 2026/27 ice-rink season because of extensive damage from the April 15 tornado. Check facility information before assuming that a familiar rink is operating. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

Ice-skating safety

Wear skates that fit securely and provide adequate ankle support.
Beginners should stay in areas appropriate for their skill level.
Young children should use appropriate protective equipment and supervision.
Follow rink direction regarding skating patterns and speed.
Take breaks when your legs become tired.
Do not skate on ponds, rivers, or other natural ice unless authorities have specifically determined that it is safe.

Natural ice deserves special caution. Air temperatures alone cannot tell you whether a frozen pond or river is safe. Moving water, springs, snow cover, changing temperatures, and thin areas can make ice unpredictable. A maintained rink is a much safer choice when natural ice conditions are uncertain.

Snowshoeing Through Ann Arbor's Winter Trails

Snowshoeing is ideal for people who enjoy hiking but want to keep exploring when deep snow makes ordinary walking difficult. Ann Arbor's parks and nearby recreation areas provide plenty of opportunities to experience quiet woods, river corridors, and snowy open spaces.

Local destinations include Barton Nature Area, Bird Hills Nature Area, Furstenberg Nature Area, and other city parks. The City of Ann Arbor maintains a large network of paths and trails, and specifically recommends checking the weather, wearing layers, using footwear with good traction, and carrying a map or having a map available on your phone. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

For a longer outing, County Farm Park and the trails around Dexter and Chelsea can provide more room to explore. Destination Ann Arbor highlights County Farm Park's marked but ungroomed winter trails and points to the Dexter area, Hudson Mills Metropark, and Park Lyndon as additional places for winter trail activities. :contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}

Michigan's Department of Natural Resources also notes that snowshoeing is permitted on public state land, with an important etiquette rule: if you encounter a groomed cross-country ski trail, stay to the side rather than walking through the ski tracks. :contentReference[oaicite:11]{index=11}

Snowshoeing safety

Snowshoeing can look gentle, but deep snow is physically demanding. Bring water even when temperatures are low, because sustained movement can cause significant sweating and dehydration. Use poles if they help with balance, especially on hills. Let someone know your route if you are heading into a remote trail area, and carry a charged phone.

Stay alert for changing daylight. A trail that looks simple in the afternoon can become much harder to navigate after sunset. During heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, or periods of rapidly falling temperatures, postpone longer trail trips and choose a shorter activity close to home instead.

Cross-Country Skiing Near Ann Arbor

Cross-country skiing is one of the best choices for people who want exercise and scenery without needing a large downhill mountain. Rolling Hills Winter Park is especially convenient for Ann Arbor-area residents. Washtenaw County lists more than three miles of groomed cross-country ski trails there, with equipment rentals available when snow coverage is adequate. :contentReference[oaicite:12]{index=12}

Rolling Hills is also useful because it combines several winter activities in one destination. You can ski, sled, or simply walk the winter trails, making it possible for a family or group with different interests to spend the day together.

Huron Meadows Metropark near Brighton is another regional option, with a dedicated Huron Meadows Golf & XC Ski Center. Destination Ann Arbor also identifies Hudson Mills Metropark and other Dexter-area trails as places to explore during snowy conditions. :contentReference[oaicite:13]{index=13}

Michigan's DNR notes that cross-country skiing is allowed on many nonmotorized trails, although grooming and local rules vary. Skiers should check whether a trail is one-way or two-way and step off the track when stopping or allowing faster skiers to pass. :contentReference[oaicite:14]{index=14}

Cross-country ski safety

Use trails with adequate snow coverage rather than skiing over exposed rocks, roots, or dirt.
Dress in layers because skiing generates substantial body heat.
Carry water and a phone on longer outings.
Learn how to slow down and stop before tackling hills.
Yield appropriately and avoid blocking groomed tracks.
Check trail grooming and operating conditions before traveling.

Do not assume that a cold week guarantees good skiing. A warm spell can melt the base, while freezing temperatures afterward can create an extremely hard surface. Fresh snow can improve coverage, but heavy wind may create drifts and poor visibility. The best conditions are generally those in which the trail operator confirms adequate coverage and safe access.

Winter Festivals and Community Events

Not every winter adventure needs to involve athletic equipment. Ann Arbor and neighboring communities have seasonal events that turn cold weather into a social experience.

Downtown Ann Arbor's holiday season has included Kindlefest in Kerrytown, along with Midnight Madness and Moonlight Madness. Kindlefest features an outdoor holiday market, family activities, vendors, live music, and fire pits. :contentReference[oaicite:15]{index=15}

Nearby communities also add to the winter calendar. Destination Ann Arbor highlights Saline's winter celebrations and the annual Dexter Ice Festival, where visitors can see ice sculptures and demonstrations. Other seasonal events around the region include holiday parades and Light Up Dexter. :contentReference[oaicite:16]{index=16}

Festival safety is mostly about preparation. Wear insulated footwear with good traction, especially if sidewalks have been treated with salt or have refrozen. Dress in layers, keep gloves and hats accessible, and consider hand warmers for extended outdoor events. If freezing rain develops, remember that a festive outdoor event is not worth taking unnecessary travel risks.

When Winter Weather Means Stay Home

One of the most important parts of enjoying winter recreation is recognizing when conditions have crossed the line from adventurous to unsafe. Ann Arbor's winter weather can change quickly. The City of Ann Arbor warns that winter walking requires additional awareness because slips, trips, and falls increase during the colder months. Even cleared and salted paths can remain slick or change rapidly with the weather. :contentReference[oaicite:17]{index=17}

Consider postponing outdoor recreation during a major winter storm, blizzard conditions, freezing rain, rapidly deteriorating visibility, or dangerous road conditions. Heavy wind can create blowing snow and make trails difficult to navigate. Extreme cold can increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly when people become wet from snow or sweat.

Driving conditions should also influence the decision. A ski hill may be operating while the roads leading there are deteriorating. In that situation, the responsible choice may be to wait rather than risk a winter drive simply to preserve a recreational plan.

Dress for the Activity, Not Just the Temperature

A common winter mistake is dressing for the thermometer instead of the activity. Someone standing around watching a festival may need more insulation than someone cross-country skiing continuously.

A practical system is a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer, and a weather-resistant outer layer. Waterproof boots are particularly important for sledding, snowshoeing, and walking through deep snow. Gloves or mittens, a warm hat, and dry socks should be considered essential rather than optional accessories.

For active sports, avoid overdressing to the point that you become soaked with sweat. Once clothing becomes wet, cooling can happen quickly when you stop moving. Pack an extra layer and spare socks for longer adventures.

Make Winter Recreation a Local Tradition

The best thing about winter in Ann Arbor is the variety. One weekend might involve sledding at Rolling Hills, another could be spent skiing at Mt. Brighton, and a quiet weekday afternoon might be perfect for snowshoeing through a local nature area. When the ice is good at a maintained rink, skating offers another way to stay active without depending on a particular trail.

The area also makes it easy to combine recreation with community events. A morning on the snow can be followed by an afternoon festival, a warm drink downtown, or an evening spent enjoying local shops and restaurants. That variety makes winter feel less like something to endure and more like a season worth exploring.

Most importantly, let the weather set the limits. Check current forecasts, park or resort conditions, trail status, and road conditions before leaving. Choose activities appropriate for your experience level, keep children supervised, and be willing to change plans when conditions deteriorate. With that approach, Ann Arbor's snowy season can offer plenty of memorable outdoor adventures while keeping safety at the center of the experience.
