Every online order ends the same way: a parcel arriving at your customer’s door. The mailer you choose affects shipping costs, product safety, and how customers feel about your brand the moment they see it. Two options dominate e-commerce today: paper mailers and poly mailers. Both have clear strengths, and the right choice depends on what you sell and what your customers value.

What Are Paper Mailers?

Paper mailers are shipping bags made from strong kraft paper. They have a natural brown finish, a self-seal closure, and are designed to carry non-fragile products such as clothing, accessories, books, and printed items. Because they are made from paper, they can be recycled with regular household paper waste, which customers appreciate.

What Are Poly Mailers?

Poly mailers are lightweight plastic shipping bags. They are flexible, tear-resistant, and water-resistant, making them a popular choice for fashion and textile brands that ship large volumes of soft goods.

1. Protection

Poly mailers have an advantage in wet weather. Their water-resistant surface protects clothing and fabrics from rain during delivery. They also stretch slightly, so they resist tearing when parcels are handled roughly.

Paper mailers offer solid protection for dry, non-fragile items and keep their shape well, which helps flat products like books and folded garments arrive neatly. For fragile goods, neither option replaces a box with padding.

2. Shipping Costs

Poly mailers are extremely light, which helps keep postage costs low, especially for brands shipping hundreds of orders a week. Paper mailers are slightly heavier but still far lighter than cardboard boxes, so both options are cost-effective compared to traditional boxes.

3. Sustainability

This is where paper mailers stand out. Kraft paper is made from renewable material and is widely recyclable. For brands that market themselves as eco-conscious, paper packaging keeps the sustainability message consistent all the way to the doorstep.

Poly mailers can be recycled in some areas, but recycling options for soft plastics vary by region, so many customers are unsure what to do with them.

4. Customer Experience and Branding

Unboxing matters. A clean kraft paper mailer gives a natural, premium feel that suits boutique fashion, handmade goods, and organic or wellness brands. Poly mailers look modern and minimal and work well for fast-moving fashion and streetwear brands where speed and volume matter most.

How to Choose

Ask yourself three questions. What do I sell? Soft goods suit both, while flat or printed items suit paper well. Where do my customers live? If deliveries often face rain, poly mailers add extra security. What does my brand stand for? If sustainability is part of your identity, paper mailers reinforce that promise.

Many online stores use both: paper mailers for everyday orders and poly mailers for rainy seasons or larger textile shipments.

Buy in Bulk to Save

Ordering mailers in larger packs lowers your cost per unit and ensures you never run short during sales or holiday peaks. Packs of 250 are a practical size for small and growing stores.
