Finding a home that allows pets is an important step for dog and cat owners, but simply seeing the words "pet-friendly" is not enough. Renters considering apartments with balcony in Santa Ana should also think about how the apartment's features will work for their pets. Every apartment community can have different rules, fees, spaces, and restrictions that may affect your daily life with an animal. Before applying, renters should take time to understand what living with a pet will actually be like.

pet-friendly apartmentsWhen comparing , think beyond whether dogs and cats are allowed. Consider how easy it will be to walk your dog, where you can wash your pet, how much you will pay in pet-related fees, and whether the apartment itself is safe and comfortable for your animal. Asking these questions before moving can help prevent surprises after signing a lease.

Broadstone Atlas advertises its Big Sur Pet Spa, while the wider Park & Paseo community offers outdoor spaces and trails that can give residents more opportunities to spend time outside with their pets. Third-party listings also currently identify the property as pet-friendly. However, renters should confirm current pet fees, limits, breed restrictions, and other requirements directly with apartment management before applying.

Check the Apartment's Pet Policy

The first thing to investigate is the apartment's complete pet policy. A property may allow pets but still have rules about the types, sizes, breeds, or number of animals residents can have.

For example, some communities may have limits on how many dogs or cats can live in one apartment. There may also be weight or breed restrictions for dogs. Other rules could cover animals such as birds, reptiles, or other pets.

Do not rely only on a property listing when checking these details. Ask the leasing team for the current written policy and review it carefully before submitting an application.

If you already have a dog or cat, provide accurate information about your pet. Knowing the rules ahead of time can help you determine whether the apartment is a practical choice for both you and your animal.

Understand Pet Deposits and Monthly Fees

Pet ownership can add to the overall cost of renting. In addition to regular rent, some communities may charge a pet deposit, one-time pet fee, monthly pet rent, or other charges.

Ask management to explain every pet-related cost before signing a lease. It can also be helpful to ask whether fees apply per pet or per apartment and whether the amount changes based on the type or size of the animal.

These costs should be included in your housing budget. An apartment may fit your budget based on the advertised rent, but the total monthly cost can be different once pet-related charges are added.

Because fees and policies can change, confirm the current amounts directly with management rather than relying on an older listing or advertisement.

Ask About Dog Areas and Walking Space

Dogs usually need regular opportunities to walk, explore, and get outside. For dog owners, the location and layout of outdoor areas can therefore be just as important as the apartment itself.

Look at where you would take your dog for a quick morning walk or evening stroll. Check whether there are sidewalks, landscaped areas, trails, or other convenient outdoor spaces nearby.

The wider Park & Paseo community includes outdoor spaces and trails, which may give residents additional places to enjoy time outside with their pets. During a tour, take a look at the paths and shared outdoor areas instead of assuming they will work for your routine.

Also consider how far you need to walk from your apartment to reach an appropriate outdoor area. A nearby space can make daily pet care easier, especially when you need to take your dog outside several times a day.

Look for Pet Washing Facilities

Pet washing can be messy when done inside a small apartment bathroom. A dedicated pet washing area can make routine grooming and cleanup more convenient.

Broadstone Atlas advertises its Big Sur Pet Spa, which is a feature worth asking about during an apartment tour. Ask management what the pet spa includes, how residents access it, and whether there are any usage rules or additional charges.

A pet washing facility can be especially useful after a muddy walk or outdoor activity. Instead of bringing a dirty dog directly into your apartment, you may have a convenient place within the community to handle basic cleaning.

Cat owners can also ask whether the facility is designed for different types of pets or primarily intended for dogs.

Consider Flooring and Cleanup

The apartment itself should also be considered from a pet owner's perspective. Dogs and cats can track dirt inside, shed fur, scratch surfaces, or occasionally have accidents.

Ask what type of flooring is installed throughout the apartment. Hard flooring can be easier to clean than carpet, although each material has its own advantages and maintenance needs.

Also check whether certain areas of the apartment have carpet, especially bedrooms. If your pet sheds heavily or has trouble with accidents, think about how easy those surfaces will be to maintain.

During your tour, look at the layout and consider where you would place food and water bowls, a pet bed, a litter box, toys, or a crate. A practical layout can make everyday pet care much easier.

Think About Balcony Safety

A balcony can be an appealing apartment feature, but pet owners should think carefully about how their animals will use the space.

Dogs and cats can behave differently when they see birds, other animals, people, or activity outside. Cats may also be able to squeeze through surprisingly small openings. Renters should therefore inspect balcony railings, doors, and other access points and ask management about any pet-related balcony rules.

Never assume that a balcony is automatically safe for an unsupervised pet. If you plan to let your animal spend time there, consider what precautions may be appropriate and whether they are permitted under the lease.

If the apartment does not have a balcony, this may be one less safety concern to manage. Either way, think about how your pet will interact with every part of the home before moving in.

Consider Your Pet's Comfort

A pet-friendly apartment should also work well for the animal's everyday needs. Dogs and cats can have different reactions to noise, traffic, elevators, neighbors, and other pets.

When touring an apartment, listen to the surroundings. Is the unit close to a busy entrance, elevator, parking area, or shared outdoor space? These locations may be convenient, but they can also mean more activity and noise.

Think about your pet's personality. A social dog may enjoy seeing people and other animals, while a nervous cat may prefer a quieter part of the building.

You should also consider the apartment's size and layout. Your pet needs enough room for its normal activities, sleeping area, food, and other belongings without making the living space difficult to manage.

Ask About Building Rules

Pet policies can include more than fees and breed restrictions. Ask whether pets are required to be leashed in shared areas and whether there are designated places for dogs.

It is also useful to ask how residents are expected to handle pet waste. Knowing where waste bags and disposal areas are located can make daily walks more convenient.

If the building has elevators, ask whether pets are allowed in all elevators and whether there are specific rules for shared spaces. You can also ask about noise policies, especially if you have a dog that sometimes barks.

These details may seem small, but they can make a noticeable difference in everyday apartment living.

Questions to Ask During an Apartment Tour

Before choosing among pet-friendly apartments, prepare a short list of questions for the leasing team. Consider asking:

What types of pets are currently allowed?
Are there breed, size, or weight restrictions?
How many pets can one apartment have?
What are the current pet deposits, fees, and monthly charges?
Are there additional charges for a second pet?
Is there a pet washing facility?
Where are the designated dog areas?
Are there walking trails or outdoor spaces nearby?
Are pets allowed in all shared areas?
Are there rules for balconies or patios?
Where can residents dispose of pet waste?
Are there any seasonal or community-specific pet rules?

Getting clear answers before signing a lease can help you understand what to expect.

Choose a Home That Works for Both of You

Finding a pet-friendly apartment is about more than finding a property that accepts dogs or cats. The best fit depends on how well the apartment, community, rules, and costs match your daily routine.

Broadstone Atlas offers pet-focused features such as the Big Sur Pet Spa, while the surrounding Park & Paseo community provides outdoor spaces and trails. These features can be useful for residents who want convenient options for pet care and outdoor activities.

Still, renters should confirm all current policies directly with management. Pet fees, breed and size restrictions, animal limits, and access rules can change over time.
