Film shoots depend on reliable temporary power for almost every department. Lighting, cameras, monitors, charging equipment, sound, makeup, wardrobe, catering and production offices can all require electricity at the same time. Unlike a normal commercial event, however, film production introduces additional challenges: sensitive sound recording, frequent location changes, long shooting hours and strict schedules.

RECD for DG SetChoosing a rental generator therefore requires more than checking its kVA rating. The production team needs to consider load requirements, noise, mobility, fuel planning, distribution, safety and applicable environmental requirements. Where diesel-generator regulations apply, considerations may also become part of the rental decision.

Build the Power Plan From the Equipment List

Generator selection should begin with the actual equipment package rather than a rough estimate based on crew size.

A production may require power for:

LED, HMI or other lighting fixtures
Camera batteries and charging stations
Monitors and video village
DIT equipment
Sound equipment
Hair, makeup and wardrobe equipment
Catering and refrigeration
Production-office equipment
Air-conditioning or temporary cooling

The individual running loads should be added together, while equipment with motors or compressors should be considered for starting demand. Lighting loads can also change quickly between setups, so leaving reasonable capacity headroom is important.

generator rental guide for film shoots and productionsFor a detailed production-specific approach, Aceget's explains how production departments can plan generator capacity around their actual equipment and shooting schedule.

Sound Changes the Generator Requirement

Generator noise is one of the biggest differences between film production and ordinary event power.

At a wedding, some generator noise may be acceptable if the machine is positioned away from guests. During a dialogue scene, however, even a low mechanical hum can become audible in the recording. This makes generator placement, enclosure and operating condition particularly important.

CPCB diesel-generator noise compliance procedureCPCB publishes specific requirements for diesel-generator noise, including compliance procedures for DG sets up to 1000 kVA.

Production teams should therefore discuss generator specifications with the sound mixer before booking the equipment. A unit described as “silent” by a rental company should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for sync-sound recording.

Choose the Generator With Location Mobility in Mind

A generator used for a fixed event may remain in one position throughout the rental period. Film productions can be completely different.

A single shooting day may involve multiple locations, meaning the generator may need to be shut down, disconnected, transported and recommissioned several times. This makes mobility, delivery access and setup time important parts of the rental decision.

The production schedule should account for generator movement rather than treating relocation as an informal task. A delay during a company move can affect every department and ultimately increase production costs.

Distribution and Cable Management Matter

The generator is only the beginning of the temporary power system. Electricity must be distributed safely to lighting fixtures, camera equipment, production areas and other departments.

Cable runs should be planned to minimise voltage drop and avoid walkways, vehicle routes and wet areas. Suitable distribution equipment should be used instead of improvised connections.

Film productions may also use specialised connectors and distribution equipment for lighting and high-current applications. The electrical team should determine the required distribution arrangement before the generator arrives.

Plan for Long Shooting Hours

A night shoot can place a generator under continuous demand for many hours. The production may require substantial lighting throughout the shift, while catering, basecamp and other departments continue consuming electricity.

Fuel planning should therefore consider the expected load and complete operating period rather than simply the number of hours stated in the rental quotation.

Before the shoot, confirm:

Fuel-tank capacity
Expected fuel consumption
Refuelling responsibility
Emergency refuelling arrangements
Operator availability
Standby equipment provisions
Additional charges for extended operating hours

A fuel shortage in the middle of a night shoot can create much more disruption than the cost of arranging adequate fuel in advance.

Understand the Environmental Compliance Position

A rental generator remains a diesel-powered emission source even when it is used temporarily. The production company should therefore understand the applicable environmental requirements at the shooting location.

This becomes especially important when filming in urban areas, residential neighbourhoods or regions with additional restrictions on diesel-generator operation.

Where RECD for DG Set Becomes Relevant

RECD for DG SetFor certain existing diesel generator applications, can become relevant where emission-control requirements apply.

CAQM direction on regulated DG-set operations in NCRThis issue is particularly important for productions operating in the National Capital Region. CAQM has issued directions governing the operation of DG sets in NCR, including requirements relating to emission-control measures. The commission's published direction explains the regulatory framework and the measures applicable to DG-set operation.

location of the shoot and the compliance status of the specific generatorFor a production team, this means the rental conversation should include the . A generator suitable for a remote location may not automatically be appropriate for a shoot in a tightly regulated urban area.

Where a rental generator is already equipped with an applicable emission-control arrangement, the production team should ask the supplier for the relevant documentation rather than relying only on a verbal assurance.

Don't Assume an RECD Should Be Added to Every Rental

For short-term rentals, installing an emission-control retrofit on a machine owned by someone else may not be practical. The more sensible approach can be to hire equipment that already meets the applicable requirements.

guide on installing RECD on rented diesel generatorsAceget's discusses why ownership, rental duration and compliance documentation matter before considering a retrofit on hired equipment.

The production team should therefore clarify this issue before the rental agreement is finalised, particularly when shooting in a regulated region.

Protect the Location as Well as the Equipment

Film crews frequently work on private properties, public streets, industrial premises and temporary locations. Generator installation should take the surrounding property into account.

The machine should be placed on a suitable stable surface, protected appropriately from weather and positioned so that exhaust gases do not enter buildings, windows or ventilation systems. Fuel connections should also be checked for leakage, while cables should be secured and protected from vehicle movement.

Noise should be discussed with the location manager as well. A technically compliant generator can still create practical problems if its placement interferes with nearby residents or other activities.

Ask the Rental Company the Right Questions

Before booking, production managers should ask the rental provider:

What is the generator's rated capacity?
What is its expected fuel consumption?
Is it suitable for long continuous operation?
What is its acoustic/noise specification?
Is an operator included?
Can the generator be moved between locations?
What distribution equipment is available?
What happens if the generator fails?
What is its applicable emission-compliance status?
Can the supplier provide supporting documentation?

Getting these details in writing reduces the chance of unexpected problems during production.

Final Takeaway

Generator rental for film shoots requires more detailed planning than ordinary temporary power applications. The production must balance electrical capacity with sound requirements, mobility, fuel, safety, location restrictions and environmental compliance.

RECD for DG SetFor productions using diesel generators in regulated areas, understanding requirements can be an important part of equipment selection. The goal should not simply be to find the cheapest generator available, but to choose equipment that can provide stable, quiet and dependable power throughout the shooting schedule.

When load planning, sound requirements, location logistics and compliance are addressed during pre-production, the generator becomes what it should be on a film set: reliable background infrastructure that supports the production without becoming a production problem.
