How much does an RECD cost in India? For businesses operating diesel generator sets, the cost of emission compliance is an important part of project planning. One of the first questions facility managers usually ask when considering a Retrofit Emission Control Device is simple:

The answer is not a single fixed figure.

The final cost of an RECD installation can vary considerably depending on the generator's capacity, engine specifications, exhaust arrangement, emission-control technology, installation requirements, testing and the level of service included in the supplier's quotation.

This is why comparing two RECD quotations only by their final price can sometimes be misleading. A lower quotation may simply include fewer services or a different technical configuration.

What Makes Up the Cost of an RECD?

An RECD project normally involves more than the emission-control device itself.

A typical quotation may include several components:

RECD equipment
Catalyst and filtration components
Custom exhaust fabrication
Mounting supports
Sensors and control system
Installation labour
Testing and commissioning
Documentation
Transportation
Maintenance support

Some suppliers may combine several of these items into a single turnkey price, while others may provide a detailed line-item quotation.

Therefore, buyers should always ask what is included before comparing different offers.

Generator Capacity Is One of the Main Cost Factors

The capacity of the diesel generator has a direct influence on the size and configuration of the emission-control system.

A small commercial DG set and a large industrial generator do not produce the same exhaust flow. Larger engines generally require emission-control equipment capable of handling higher exhaust volumes and operating conditions.

RECD for DG setAs a result, an is normally selected according to the actual engine and exhaust characteristics rather than simply choosing a standard product from a catalogue.

For preliminary budgeting, capacity bands can be useful. However, the final quotation should ideally be based on the generator's actual make, model, kVA rating and site conditions.

Technology Can Change the Price

Not every RECD system has exactly the same internal configuration.

Depending on the application, a system may use catalytic treatment, particulate filtration, sensors, monitoring equipment and different regeneration approaches.

A passive-regeneration arrangement can have a different cost from a system requiring active regeneration and additional control hardware.

The correct choice depends partly on how the generator is operated.

For example, a generator that regularly operates at suitable exhaust temperatures may have different system requirements from one that spends much of its operating life at low load.

Choosing the cheapest technology without considering the actual operating profile can therefore become a false economy.

Exhaust Fabrication Adds to the Overall Cost

The existing exhaust arrangement is another major factor.

An RECD needs to be physically integrated into the generator's exhaust system. Depending on the site, this can involve:

Pipe modification
Flanges
Flexible connections
Supports
Insulation
Exhaust rerouting
Mounting structures
Additional fabrication

A straightforward installation with accessible exhaust routing may require relatively little modification.

A difficult installation inside a confined DG room, rooftop enclosure or industrial facility may require considerably more fabrication work.

This is why two generators with identical kVA ratings can still receive different installation quotations.

Site Conditions Matter

The physical location of the generator can also affect the final project cost.

Before installation, a supplier may need to evaluate:

Available working space
Exhaust height
Pipe routing
Access for equipment movement
Lifting requirements
Existing structural supports
Generator-room access
Shutdown requirements

If the RECD can be installed without major changes, the project may remain relatively straightforward.

If structural reinforcement or extensive exhaust modification is required, additional engineering and fabrication costs may arise.

RECD priceA proper site survey is therefore valuable before finalising an .

Installation Is Part of the Total Cost

The equipment price alone does not represent the complete investment.

Installation may include removing sections of the existing exhaust, fitting the RECD, connecting sensors, installing supports, modifying pipework and checking the final arrangement.

The duration can also vary according to generator capacity and site complexity.

For a facility that depends heavily on its DG set, downtime should also be considered during planning. Even if downtime does not appear as a line item on the supplier's invoice, it can represent a real operational cost.

This is particularly relevant for hospitals, manufacturing plants, data centres, commercial buildings and other sites where backup power is critical.

Testing and Commissioning Should Not Be Ignored

An RECD installation should be followed by appropriate inspection, testing and commissioning.

The process can involve checking parameters such as:

Exhaust temperature
Backpressure
Sensor readings
System operation
Emission performance
Controller functionality

The applicable testing requirements should be confirmed with the supplier and against the relevant regulatory framework.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)The provides official regulatory and technical information relating to pollution control and emission requirements.

Buyers should therefore ask suppliers for the relevant test and approval documentation rather than relying only on statements such as “CPCB compliant” in a quotation.

Documentation Can Be Part of the Quote

Documentation is another area where quotations can differ.

A comprehensive project may include documents such as:

RECD test certificate
Type-approval documentation
Installation report
Commissioning report
Technical datasheet
Maintenance instructions
Warranty documents
Recorded operating parameters

One supplier may include all of these in its turnkey package, while another may charge separately for certain services.

RECD manufacturers in IndiaWhen comparing , it is therefore useful to compare the complete scope rather than only the headline price.

Maintenance Adds to Long-Term Cost

The initial purchase is only one part of the financial calculation.

RECD systems require appropriate maintenance during their operating life. Depending on the technology, this may involve inspection of filters, catalyst condition, sensors, pressure readings and other components.

Some suppliers offer an Annual Maintenance Contract, while others provide maintenance as a separate service.

A buyer should ask:

Is the first service included?
Is AMC included in the quotation?
Are consumables covered?
What happens if a filter requires replacement?
Are service visits included?
What is the warranty period?

These questions help reveal the actual long-term cost of ownership.

Why the Cheapest RECD Quote May Not Be the Best

Suppose three suppliers quote different prices for the same generator.

At first glance, the cheapest quotation may appear to be the obvious choice.

However, the three quotations could differ in:

Equipment configuration
Catalyst or filter specification
Installation scope
Testing
Warranty
AMC
Documentation
Transportation
Site modifications

A lower price is useful only when the technical scope is comparable.

cost and scopeThe better approach is to prepare a comparison sheet and evaluate each quotation on both .

RECD Cost vs Generator Replacement

For an older but mechanically healthy DG set, businesses may face a choice between retrofitting the existing generator and replacing it with a newer unit.

Complete generator replacement can involve:

New generator purchase
Installation
Civil work
Electrical modifications
Exhaust work
Transportation
Removal of the old generator
Additional downtime

A retrofit approach may require significantly less disruption because the existing generator remains in service.

However, replacement can make more sense when the existing engine is near the end of its useful life or requires major mechanical repairs.

RECD priceThe decision should therefore consider the generator's age, condition, operating hours, future usage and applicable compliance requirements—not just the initial .

How to Compare RECD Quotations Properly

Before selecting a supplier, ask each vendor to provide a clear technical and commercial breakdown.

A useful comparison can include:

Factor	What to Check
Generator compatibility	Engine make, model and capacity
RECD technology	Filtration, catalyst and regeneration method
Installation	Exhaust modification and mounting scope
Testing	Commissioning and performance verification
Certification	Relevant approval and test documents
Warranty	Parts, labour and exclusions
AMC	Annual service scope and cost
Documentation	Reports, certificates and manuals
Transportation	Included or additional
Taxes	Clearly stated in the quotation

This approach makes it much easier to identify whether two quotations are genuinely comparable.

Ask for a Site-Based Quote

A generic price range can be useful for initial budgeting, but it should not be treated as a final purchase price.

A supplier should ideally review the generator's technical information and site conditions before providing the final quotation.

Important information may include the DG set's:

kVA rating
Engine model
Manufacturing year
Exhaust diameter
Exhaust configuration
Typical load
Installation location
Existing emission-control equipment

Providing accurate information at the quotation stage can reduce the risk of unexpected fabrication or installation charges later.

What Should Be Included in a Good RECD Proposal?

A professional proposal should make the scope clear.

Ideally, the buyer should be able to understand exactly what equipment is being supplied, how it will be installed, what testing will be carried out and what documents will be handed over.

The quotation should also clearly identify exclusions.

For example, if civil work, scaffolding, electrical work, transportation or additional exhaust fabrication is not included, the buyer should know this before issuing a purchase order.

Clear commercial terms can prevent disputes once installation begins.

Final Thoughts

RECD price in IndiaThere is no universal because the total investment depends on several technical and commercial factors.

Generator capacity, engine characteristics, emission-control technology, exhaust configuration, site conditions, fabrication, installation, testing, documentation and maintenance can all influence the final cost.

For this reason, businesses should avoid selecting an RECD solely on the basis of the lowest quotation.
