Diesel generators are widely used as backup and standby power sources in industries, commercial buildings, hospitals, offices, residential complexes, and other facilities. While DG sets provide reliable electricity, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions that need to be properly controlled.

RECD device for diesel generatorA is a retrofit emission-control solution designed to help control pollutants from existing diesel generator sets. It is installed in the exhaust system and treats the exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. Understanding how an RECD works, its benefits, installation requirements, and maintenance can help DG-set owners choose a suitable emission-control solution.

What Is an RECD Device for a Diesel Generator?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . It is an emission-control system designed for installation on an existing diesel generator.

Instead of replacing an entire DG set, a suitable retrofit device can be integrated with the generator's exhaust system. The device is selected according to factors such as generator capacity, engine specifications, exhaust conditions, operating load, and applicable environmental requirements.

The exact technology used can vary depending on the RECD system and its intended application.

How Does an RECD Device Work?

During operation, a diesel engine burns fuel and produces exhaust gases containing different pollutants. These gases travel through the exhaust system before being discharged.

An RECD is installed along this exhaust path. The exhaust passes through the device, where its emission-control components can capture or reduce targeted pollutants before the gases exit the system.

The effectiveness of the device depends on its design, correct sizing, installation, DG-set condition, and operating conditions.

Which Emissions Can an RECD Help Control?

Diesel combustion can produce several pollutants, including:

Particulate Matter (PM)
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Hydrocarbons (HC)
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

The ability of an RECD to control particular pollutants depends on the technology used. Many retrofit emission-control systems focus particularly on particulate emissions, while other technologies may address additional pollutants.

Therefore, DG-set owners should review the technical specifications of the selected device rather than assuming that every RECD provides the same emission-control performance.

Why Is an RECD Device Important for Diesel Generators?

Existing diesel generators can continue operating for many years, but their emissions still need to be managed appropriately.

A retrofit emission-control device provides an option for adding emission-control technology to an existing generator. It can be useful for organizations that want to improve exhaust emission management without replacing the complete DG set.

However, an RECD should be considered as part of an overall emission-control strategy. Proper engine maintenance and correct generator operation remain equally important.

Benefits of Using an RECD Device

1. Retrofit Solution for Existing DG Sets

An RECD can be installed on an existing diesel generator, making retrofit emission control possible without necessarily replacing the complete generator.

2. Helps Control Exhaust Emissions

A suitable device can help control targeted pollutants in DG-set exhaust gases, particularly particulate matter depending on the technology used.

3. Supports Environmental Compliance

Selecting and installing an appropriate emission-control device can support efforts to meet applicable environmental and emission-control requirements.

4. Practical for Existing Installations

Organizations with established DG-set installations may consider retrofit technology when upgrading their emission-control arrangements.

5. Complements Proper DG Maintenance

An emission-control device can work alongside regular engine servicing and proper generator operation to support better overall emission management.

How to Choose the Right RECD Device?

Choosing the correct RECD is important because different DG sets have different engine and exhaust characteristics.

Before selecting a device, consider the following:

DG Set Capacity

Check the generator's kVA rating and operating range. The RECD should be suitable for the specific generator capacity.

Engine Specifications

Engine make, model, fuel system, displacement, and other technical characteristics can influence the selection of an appropriate emission-control system.

Exhaust Conditions

Exhaust gas flow, temperature, back pressure, and existing exhaust configuration should be evaluated before installation.

Operating Load

The generator's typical load profile and operating hours can affect exhaust conditions and emission-control performance.

Installation Space

The available space around the exhaust system should be checked to ensure that the selected device can be installed safely and maintained properly.

Technical Documentation

Review the product specifications, testing information, certifications, and other relevant documentation before making a purchase.

Applicable Requirements

DG-set owners should review the environmental requirements applicable to their installation and ensure that the selected RECD is appropriate for those requirements.

RECD Installation for Diesel Generators

Professional installation is important for the proper functioning of an RECD system. Before installation, the existing exhaust arrangement should be inspected and the device should be matched to the generator's specifications.

Installation may involve:

Checking the DG-set specifications.
Evaluating the existing exhaust system.
Selecting the appropriate RECD.
Installing the device in the required exhaust position.
Checking exhaust flow and back pressure.
Inspecting connections and mounting.
Testing the system after installation.

The installation should follow the manufacturer's technical instructions and applicable requirements.

RECD Maintenance and Cleaning

Like other exhaust-system components, an RECD requires appropriate maintenance. The exact maintenance schedule depends on the technology, generator operating hours, fuel quality, and manufacturer's recommendations.

Regular inspection can help identify issues such as excessive soot accumulation, damage, unusual exhaust back pressure, or other operational problems.

DG-set maintenance should also continue as normal. Air filters, fuel systems, lubricating oil, cooling systems, and other engine components should be inspected and serviced according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Does RECD Replace DG Set Maintenance?

No. An RECD is not a replacement for proper engine maintenance.

If a diesel generator has poor combustion, incorrect fuel delivery, blocked air filters, worn engine components, or other mechanical problems, these issues should be diagnosed and corrected.

A healthy and properly maintained engine provides a better foundation for effective emission control.

RECD and CPCB Requirements

In India, DG-set owners should consider applicable environmental regulations and relevant CPCB requirements when selecting an emission-control solution.

The specific requirements can depend on factors such as the DG-set capacity, installation type, location, applicable emission standards, and current regulatory provisions.

Before installation, organizations should verify the latest applicable requirements and review the technical documentation of the proposed RECD.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Selecting an RECD

Some common mistakes can affect the performance of a retrofit emission-control system:

Choosing a device without checking DG-set specifications
Ignoring exhaust flow and temperature
Not evaluating exhaust back pressure
Installing the device without proper technical assessment
Neglecting regular cleaning and inspection
Treating RECD as a replacement for engine maintenance
Failing to review applicable environmental requirements
Purchasing without checking technical documentation

A proper technical assessment before installation can help avoid these problems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What does RECD stand for?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . It is an emission-control system designed to be installed on an existing diesel generator.

2. What is the purpose of an RECD device?

The primary purpose of an RECD is to help control pollutants in diesel-generator exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere.

3. Can an RECD be installed on an existing diesel generator?

Yes, retrofit emission-control devices are designed for existing equipment. However, compatibility should be checked based on the DG-set capacity, engine specifications, exhaust conditions, and applicable requirements.

4. Does every RECD reduce the same pollutants?

No. Emission-control performance depends on the technology and design of the particular device. Product specifications should be checked to understand which pollutants it is designed to control.

5. Is DG-set maintenance still necessary after installing RECD?

Yes. Regular engine servicing remains essential. RECD should complement proper DG-set maintenance rather than replace it.
