Diesel generator sets are widely used for backup and continuous power in commercial buildings, industries, hospitals, construction sites, and other facilities. However, diesel engines produce exhaust emissions that need to be properly controlled. A Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) can be used with an existing DG set to help control emissions without replacing the complete generator.

This guide explains what an RECD is, how it works, its benefits, installation considerations, and important compliance points for diesel generator users.

What Is RECD for DG Set?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system designed to be installed on an existing diesel generator's exhaust system.

Instead of replacing an older DG set with a new generator, a suitable retrofit system can be installed to help control targeted exhaust pollutants. The exact performance and pollutant-control capability depend on the technology, DG-set specifications, operating conditions, and installation.

An RECD system should always be selected according to the generator's technical specifications and the applicable regulatory requirements.

How Does an RECD Device for Diesel Generator Work?

RECD device for diesel generatorAn is generally installed in the exhaust path of the DG set. When the generator operates, exhaust gases pass through the emission-control equipment before being released into the atmosphere.

Depending on the RECD technology, the system may use filtration, catalytic treatment, or other emission-control mechanisms to reduce specific pollutants.

The basic working process can be understood as:

The diesel engine burns fuel and produces exhaust gases.
Exhaust gases move through the generator's exhaust system.
The RECD processes targeted pollutants in the exhaust stream.
Treated exhaust gases continue through the outlet.
The system operates according to its designed technical parameters.

Proper installation is important because factors such as exhaust temperature, gas flow, back pressure, engine capacity, and operating load can affect system performance.

Key Benefits of RECD for DG Sets

1. Helps Control Exhaust Emissions

The primary purpose of RECD is to help control targeted pollutants from diesel generator exhaust. The actual reduction depends on the selected technology and operating conditions.

2. Supports Applicable Compliance Requirements

CPCB guidelines for RECDFollowing the and other applicable requirements can help DG-set operators plan emission-control measures appropriately. Users should verify the latest applicable requirements for their specific DG set and installation.

3. Can Be Used With Existing DG Sets

A retrofit solution can allow an existing generator to be equipped with additional emission-control technology, subject to technical compatibility.

4. Supports Better Environmental Management

Controlling generator emissions can contribute to improved environmental management at facilities where DG sets are regularly operated.

5. DG Set Replacement May Not Always Be Necessary

Where technically and legally suitable, retrofitting can be considered instead of immediately replacing an existing generator. The right approach depends on the DG set, applicable regulations, condition of the equipment, and site requirements.

Important Factors Before Choosing an RECD

Selecting an RECD should not be based only on price. Several technical factors should be checked before installation.

DG Set Capacity

The RECD should be compatible with the generator's rated capacity and exhaust requirements.

Engine Make and Model

Engine specifications can affect exhaust characteristics and compatibility with the emission-control system.

Exhaust Gas Flow

The system should be designed for the expected exhaust flow of the generator.

Exhaust Temperature

Some emission-control technologies require specific operating temperature conditions for effective operation.

Back Pressure

Excessive exhaust back pressure can affect engine performance. The retrofit system should therefore be designed and installed within suitable technical limits.

Operating Pattern

Consider how frequently the DG set operates, its average load, operating hours, and duty cycle before selecting the system.

RECD Installation Considerations

Proper installation is essential for reliable operation. The installation process may involve assessing the existing exhaust arrangement, checking available space, confirming technical compatibility, and integrating the emission-control equipment into the exhaust line.

The installation should also consider:

DG-set capacity and engine specifications
Exhaust pipe dimensions
Exhaust gas flow
Back-pressure limits
Operating temperature
Accessibility for inspection and maintenance
Electrical or control requirements, where applicable
Manufacturer's installation instructions

Professional technical assessment is recommended before finalizing the system.

RECD Maintenance

Installing an RECD does not eliminate the need for regular DG-set maintenance. The generator engine, fuel system, lubrication system, cooling system, filters, and exhaust system should continue to be maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

The RECD itself should also be inspected and maintained according to its technical documentation. Cleaning, inspection, replacement of consumable components, monitoring, or other service requirements may vary by technology.

Regular maintenance can help maintain proper system operation and identify problems early.

CPCB Compliance and Documentation

Compliance requirements can vary depending on the DG-set category, capacity, installation, location, and applicable regulations. Therefore, users should review the current requirements applicable to their equipment.

When evaluating an RECD, check relevant technical documentation, applicable certifications or approvals where required, installation records, maintenance records, and other supporting documents.

It is also important to avoid assuming that every retrofit device is automatically suitable for every DG set. Compatibility and applicable regulatory requirements should be verified before installation.

Why Professional RECD Selection Matters

An incorrectly selected or installed retrofit system may not provide the expected results and can potentially create operational issues. A proper assessment considers the DG set's capacity, engine specifications, exhaust conditions, operating pattern, and installation requirements.

A professional RECD solution provider can assist with technical evaluation, product selection, installation guidance, documentation, and after-sales support as applicable.

FAQs About RECD for DG Set

1. What is the main purpose of RECD?

The main purpose of RECD is to help control specific pollutants from the exhaust of an existing diesel generator.

2. Can RECD be installed on an existing DG set?

Yes, retrofit emission-control systems are designed for existing equipment, provided the selected system is technically compatible with the DG set and meets applicable requirements.

3. Is RECD the same for every DG set?

No. RECD selection can depend on factors such as generator capacity, engine model, exhaust flow, temperature, back pressure, and operating conditions.

4. Does RECD replace DG-set maintenance?

No. Regular engine and DG-set maintenance remains necessary. RECD should be treated as an additional emission-control measure rather than a replacement for proper generator maintenance.

5. What should I check before buying an RECD?

Check DG capacity, engine make and model, exhaust conditions, compatibility, technical documentation, installation requirements, maintenance needs, and applicable compliance requirements.

Conclusion

RECD for DG Set can be an important emission-control option for suitable existing diesel generators. By integrating an appropriate retrofit system into the exhaust arrangement, DG-set operators can work toward better control of targeted emissions while continuing to use existing equipment.
