Diesel generator sets are widely used as backup and standby power sources in commercial buildings, hospitals, industries, offices, construction sites, and other facilities. While DG sets provide reliable electricity during power interruptions, their diesel engines produce exhaust emissions. Managing these emissions requires appropriate emission-control measures and proper operation and maintenance.

RECD for DG set,A or Retrofit Emission Control Device, is designed to be installed on an existing diesel generator engine to help control exhaust emissions. Instead of replacing an entire existing DG set, a suitable retrofit system can be considered for compatible applications.

What Is a RECD for DG Set?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an emission-control system designed for installation on an already certified diesel engine or DG-set engine family. CPCB's published RECD procedure specifies that RECDs are developed, optimized, and certified for particular certified DG engine families.

This means that selecting a RECD is not simply a matter of choosing a device based on generator capacity. The engine model, technical characteristics, emission requirements, application, and approved device range should also be considered.

DG set RECD deviceA properly selected can become part of an overall emission-control strategy for an existing generator.

How Does RECD Help Control Emissions?

A diesel engine produces exhaust gases through combustion. Depending on the engine and operating conditions, exhaust can contain particulate matter and other pollutants.

A retrofit emission-control system works with the existing exhaust system to control specified pollutants. The actual technology and configuration depend on the approved RECD design and the engine family for which it has been developed.

The objective is to reduce relevant exhaust emissions while maintaining suitable engine operation and safety.

Why Is RECD Selection Important?

One of the most important aspects of RECD installation is compatibility.

CPCB's procedure includes provisions for RECD families and specifies that their application range is linked to the engine family and the relevant type-approval requirements.

Before selecting a device, users should consider:

DG-set rated capacity
Engine manufacturer and model
Engine family
Existing exhaust configuration
Operating conditions
Approved application range
Installation requirements
Maintenance requirements
Applicable compliance requirements

CPCB approved RECD for DG setA should therefore be understood in the context of its applicable approval, engine family, and intended application rather than as a universal device for every generator.

Installation of RECD

RECD installation should be carried out according to the manufacturer's approved instructions and by appropriately skilled personnel.

CPCB's installation and operation guidance requires RECD manufacturers/importers/retrofitters to provide written installation instructions, safety information, and operation and maintenance instructions. The instructions should also identify the DG-set applications and range for which the RECD is approved.

RECD installation service for DG setA professional generally involves checking the generator and engine details, confirming compatibility, inspecting the exhaust arrangement, installing the device according to instructions, and checking operation after installation.

Maintenance After Installation

Installing an emission-control device is only one part of effective emission management. Regular maintenance is also important.

Maintenance may include:

Inspection of the exhaust system
Checking device condition
Monitoring engine performance
Following manufacturer-recommended service intervals
Checking for abnormal smoke or exhaust conditions
Maintaining appropriate engine settings
Keeping installation and maintenance records

If the underlying engine has a maintenance problem, such as poor combustion or excessive oil consumption, that issue should be investigated rather than expecting the RECD alone to correct the engine problem.

Choosing an RECD Manufacturer

RECD manufacturer in IndiaWhen selecting an , users should examine technical documentation, applicable approvals, compatibility information, installation support, and maintenance guidance.

Important questions include:

Is the RECD applicable to the specific engine family?
What is its approved application range?
What documentation is provided?
Are installation instructions available?
Is technical support available after installation?
Are operation and maintenance instructions provided?

These checks can help users make a technically informed decision.

Benefits of Using RECD

A suitable retrofit system can offer several practical benefits:

Allows emission-control equipment to be considered for existing DG sets
Can support emission-management objectives
Avoids automatically requiring replacement of an entire generator
Can be matched to specified engine families
Provides a structured retrofit approach
Can be integrated with appropriate maintenance practices

The actual emission-control performance depends on the approved device, engine, installation, operating conditions, and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RECD used on existing DG sets?

Yes. RECDs are retrofit emission-control devices intended for application on existing certified engine/DG-set families within their approved range.

Can one RECD fit every DG set?

No. RECD selection is application-specific. Engine family and technical characteristics are important considerations.

Does RECD replace DG-set maintenance?

No. RECD and engine maintenance serve different purposes. Proper engine maintenance remains important.

Who should install an RECD?

Installation should follow the manufacturer's instructions and be performed by appropriately skilled personnel.

Conclusion

RECD for DG setA can be an important part of an emission-control strategy for compatible existing diesel generators. However, successful implementation depends on correct device selection, engine compatibility, appropriate installation, documentation, operation, and maintenance.
