RECD test certificate for DG setWhen buying or installing a retrofit emission control device, checking its certification is an important step. An provides technical and certification details that help confirm what type of RECD has been tested, which engine family it is intended for, and what emission-control performance has been demonstrated.

how to read an RECD test certificateHowever, these certificates can contain technical terms and multiple fields that may be difficult to understand. In this guide, we explain and what the major fields generally mean.

What Is an RECD Test Certificate?

An RECD test certificate is a document issued through the applicable testing and certification process for a Retro-fit Emission Control Device. It contains information about the manufacturer, RECD model or family, intended engine application, emission performance and certification details.

CPCB's RECD procedure provides for Type Approval and Conformity of Production (CoP), with RECDs developed and certified for applicable engine families.

The certificate is therefore more than just a product document. It helps identify whether the RECD belongs to the certified type or family and whether its stated application matches the intended DG set.

How to Read an RECD Test Certificate?

RECD test certificate for DG setIf you are checking an , start with the basic identification details and then move to the technical and certification information.

1. Certificate Number

The certificate normally contains a unique certificate or TA/CoP certificate number.

This number helps identify the specific certification document and should be recorded when maintaining DG-set compliance documentation.

2. Certificate Issue Date

Look for the date on which the certificate was issued.

The issue date helps you understand when the certification document was issued and can be useful when checking the certificate's validity and associated CoP requirements.

3. Manufacturer's Name and Address

The certificate identifies the manufacturer or relevant organisation responsible for the RECD.

Compare this information with the supplier's documentation to make sure the product being offered matches the certified manufacturer and product information.

4. RECD Trade Name or Mark

This field identifies the manufacturer's trade name, brand or mark associated with the RECD.

It is useful for matching the certificate with the actual device supplied for your DG set.

5. RECD Family Designation

An RECD may belong to a specific family, such as an R-series family designation.

CPCB's procedure explains that RECDs are grouped into families for certification, with parent RECDs and applicable variants.

When checking a certificate, make sure the family designation matches the documentation provided with the device.

6. RECD Type or Model Designation

This field identifies the specific RECD type or model.

Do not rely only on the manufacturer's brand name. Compare the actual model or type designation with the certificate and purchase documentation.

7. RECD Category

The certificate may specify whether the RECD is domestic or imported.

This is a basic identification field that helps describe the category of the certified device.

8. Class of RECD

The certificate can also include the class or classification of the emission-control device.

This information should be checked against the technical documentation supplied by the manufacturer or vendor.

9. Type Identification of the RECD

A type identification field helps identify the certified RECD configuration.

It may be particularly useful when different models or variants exist within the same RECD family.

10. RECD Identification Marking

The certificate can specify where the type identification marking is located on the physical device.

When inspecting an installed RECD, compare the identification marking on the equipment with the certification documentation.

11. Identifying Part Number

The certificate may list one or more identifying part numbers for the RECD.

These numbers can help you match the physical device with the certified configuration.

12. Engine or Engine Family Application Range

most important fieldsThis is one of the to check.

An RECD is not automatically suitable for every diesel generator. CPCB's procedure states that RECDs are developed, optimised and certified for already certified DG engine families, and the Type Approval range describes the engine or engine-family power range to which the RECD family may be applied.

Therefore, compare:

DG set make
Engine make
Engine model
Engine family
Rated power
Applicable RECD model

The RECD should be technically suitable for the specific engine application.

13. PM Reduction Efficiency

The certificate may specify the particulate matter (PM) reduction efficiency demonstrated by the RECD.

This is an important performance-related field because particulate matter is one of the major pollutants associated with diesel exhaust.

Do not assume that the PM reduction percentage applies universally to every DG set. The applicable result depends on the certified RECD, test procedure, engine/application and conditions under which the device was tested.

14. Emission Stage or Regulation

The certificate may identify the emission regulation or stage for which the RECD is designed.

This helps determine the type of base engine or emission configuration for which the RECD was certified.

Always compare this information with the actual specifications and documentation of your DG set.

15. Manufacturing Plant Details

The certificate may include the manufacturing plant address or other manufacturing information.

This helps establish the production source associated with the certified RECD.

16. Conformity of Production (CoP)

Conformity of ProductionCoP stands for .

Type Approval establishes the certified configuration, while CoP is part of the continuing conformity process. The CPCB certificate template includes Type Approval, Type Approval Extension and CoP information.

When reviewing a certificate, check whether the relevant CoP information and dates are properly documented.

17. Certificate Validity

Always check the validity information.

A certificate may state a validity date and conditions related to conducting CoP. The CPCB certificate template specifically includes a validity statement subject to the applicable CoP requirements.

This is especially important when purchasing an RECD because you should verify the current certification status rather than relying on an old document.

Why Is Checking the RECD Certificate Important?

Installing an emission-control device without checking its technical suitability can create compliance and performance problems.

RECD for DG setBefore purchasing an , verify:

Certificate number
Manufacturer details
RECD family
RECD model/type
Engine application range
Power range
PM reduction information
Emission stage
Type Approval details
CoP information
Certificate validity

This information can help you avoid selecting an RECD that is not intended for your particular engine.

RECD Certificate vs Product Brochure

RECD test certificateA product brochure is mainly used to explain product features, specifications and benefits. An serves a different purpose because it provides certification and test-related information.

Do not treat a marketing brochure as a replacement for the applicable certification documentation.

If a vendor claims that an RECD is certified, ask for the relevant certificate and verify that the model and engine application match your DG set.

Common Mistakes When Checking an RECD Certificate

Some common mistakes include:

Checking Only the Brand Name

The same manufacturer may offer multiple RECD models or families. Always check the specific model and application range.

Ignoring Engine Compatibility

An RECD designed for one engine family should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for another.

Looking Only at PM Reduction

Emission performance is important, but certificate validity, engine application, model identification and other technical details also matter.

Using an Old Certificate Without Verification

Certification documents can have validity and CoP-related conditions. Always check the current documentation supplied by the vendor.
