RECDCPCB IV+ DG setWhen organizations evaluate diesel generators and emission control, two terms often appear together: and . Although both are associated with emission management, they are not the same thing.

Understanding the difference can help businesses make better technical decisions when purchasing, operating, replacing, or retrofitting diesel generator sets.

What Is RECD?

Retrofit Emission Control Device.RECD means

It is an emission-control device designed to be added to a suitable existing diesel generator engine.

The device is installed in the exhaust system and is intended to control targeted exhaust pollutants.

CPCB's published RECD procedure explains that retrofit devices are developed and certified for already-certified DG engine families and that type approval has an applicable range.

What Is a Newer CPCB Emission Standard?

CPCB emission standards are requirements applicable to engines and equipment based on the relevant regulatory framework.

Newer-generation DG engines are designed and manufactured with their applicable emission requirements in mind.

A retrofit device, on the other hand, is added to an existing engine.

Therefore, the two concepts should not be treated as identical.

Why Are They Compared?

Organizations often compare retrofitment with generator replacement.

Suppose a company has an existing DG set that is still mechanically useful. The organization may need to evaluate whether a suitable retrofit emission-control solution is available or whether replacement with newer equipment is more appropriate.

The answer depends on:

DG-set age
Engine condition
Operating hours
Applicable requirements
Retrofit availability
Cost
Space
Power requirements
Maintenance needs

Does RECD Turn an Old DG Set Into a Newer-Standard DG Set?

Not automatically.

Adding an RECD does not necessarily change every characteristic of the original engine or make it identical to a newly manufactured engine designed around a newer emission standard.

Instead, RECD is a retrofit emission-control approach.

The applicable regulations should be checked for the particular DG set and retrofit arrangement.

What Does CPCB Say About RECD Applicability?

CPCB's RECD procedure discusses engine-family compatibility and type-approval ranges. This means a retrofit device is not automatically applicable to every engine.

certified RECD CPCB also publishes amanufacturer list with different engine-power ranges and applicability categories.

This distinction is important for businesses evaluating retrofit options.

When Should a Business Evaluate Retrofitment?

Retrofitment may be worth evaluating when:

An existing DG set remains operationally useful
A suitable certified retrofit solution exists
Applicable requirements permit the retrofit approach
The engine is in suitable condition
Installation is technically feasible
Maintenance can be supported

These factors should be evaluated together.

When Should Replacement Be Considered?

Replacement may need to be considered where the existing generator is very old, mechanically unreliable, unsuitable for the organization's power requirements, or cannot practically accommodate the required emission-control solution.

Regulatory requirements can also affect this decision.

A technical assessment should be conducted rather than assuming that retrofitment or replacement is always the appropriate answer.

Why Is Engine Maintenance Important?

Whether a generator uses an RECD or a newer emission-control system, engine maintenance remains important.

A poorly maintained engine can experience:

Incomplete combustion
Excessive smoke
Injector problems
Poor fuel efficiency
Reduced performance
Increased emissions

Routine maintenance helps the generator operate closer to its intended condition.

What Should Organizations Compare?

A useful comparison should consider:

Existing DG condition: Is the engine mechanically sound?

Emission requirements: What requirements apply to the generator?

Retrofit availability: Is a suitable RECD certified for the engine?

Installation: Can the exhaust system accommodate the device?

Operating requirements: How frequently and at what load is the DG used?

Lifecycle cost: What are the installation, maintenance, and operating costs?

Replacement: Would a newer generator provide a more suitable long-term solution?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RECD the same as CPCB IV+?

No. RECD is a retrofit emission-control device, while CPCB emission standards define requirements applicable to relevant engines and equipment.

Can RECD make an old engine identical to a new engine?

No. Retrofit emission control does not change every characteristic of the original engine.

Can an existing DG set use RECD?

Suitable existing engines may be eligible, subject to technical and regulatory requirements.

Should organizations verify current CPCB requirements?

Yes. Applicable requirements should be confirmed before making a retrofit or replacement decision.

Conclusion

RECD and newer CPCB emission-standard DG sets represent different approaches to emission management. RECD is a retrofit solution added to an existing engine, while newer generator engines are designed around their applicable emission standards.

Organizations should evaluate their specific DG set, applicable regulations, engine condition, retrofit availability, installation requirements, and long-term operating needs before deciding which approach is appropriate.
