Both the locally-produced vehicles are available in petrol only. However, two things make these two cars stand out from each other and i.e. the Renault Kiger can be had with an optional turbo-petrol engine, which the Tata Punch misses out on. That said, the Punch has an optional CNG version.

In terms of pricing, the Tata Punch is cheaper than the Renault Kiger. The Punch’s price starts from Rs 6 lakh, while the Kiger’s price starts from Rs 6.50 lakh. All are ex-showroom prices.

These two sub-compact SUVs cater to those buyers who want mileage, practicality and can be bought under an affordable price range. That said, these two are direct rivals which is why we are here to weigh them in terms of features and specifications. Let’s read on, then.

Specifications

For starters, you should know that the Renault Kiger is the flagship offering from the French carmaker in India. It is based on the CMF-A+ platform, which also underpins other Renault cars, such as the Renault Kwid and the Triber, and the Nissan Magnite. The French carmaker Renault offers two 1.0-litre petrol engines on the Kiger: a naturally-aspirated mill and a turbocharged mill.

The 1.0-litre Energy (999cc), three-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine is tuned to churn out 99 bhp at 5000 rpm and 152 Nm of peak torque at 2200-4400 rpm. The alternate engine includes a 1.0-litre Turbo (999cc), three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol mill tuned to churn out 98.63 bhp at 5000 rpm and 160 Nm of peak torque at 3600 rpm. Further, the Kiger has three drive modes: Normal, Eco and Sport.

On the other hand, the indigenous car manufacturer Tata Motors built the Punch on the ALFA-ARC platform, which also underpins the Tata Altroz. However, the Punch is powered by a Revotron 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is tuned to produce 87 bhp at 6000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 3250 rpm. There is also Tata Punch CNG in the pipeline which will enter the CNG market soon. The same engine will power the CNG version but it will have a lower state of tune to 72 bhp and 103 Nm of torque.

As for the transmission, the Tata Punch is mated to a five-speed manual and an optional five-speed AMT gearbox. Considering the Punch’s price, the carmaker should have offered a turbocharged engine.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Tata Punch’s mileage ranges between 18.8 km/l and 20.09 km/l. On the other hand, the Renault Kiger’s mileage ranges between 18.24 km/l and 20.5 km/l. All are ARAI-certified mileage figures. Please note that the real-world mileage figures can vary with the combination of engine and transmission, the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles.

Let’s now keep their engine outputs aside and jump to their suspension setups. The Tata Punch has a superior setup to the Renault Kiger.

In contrast, the Renault Kiger stands on a MacPherson Strut with a lower transverse link suspension at the front and a twist beam with coil spring suspension at the rear.

Therefore, these vehicles are engineered by keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind. They shouldn’t make you complain about the ride quality, especially if you are going through a pothole or undulations.

Aside from that, both vehicles are equipped with disc-drum brakes. A vehicle from this segment with all-disc brakes can be the least expected. However, it is worth noting that a vehicle with all-disc brakes will offer a superior braking performance than the conventional disc-drum brakes or all-drum brakes.

Furthermore, the top-most variant of these two vehicles has the same tyre profile of 195/60 R16. Both vehicles can either be had with steel rims or alloy wheels, depending on the variant.

Let’s start with the Tata Punch’s features. Please note that the features mentioned here belong to the top-most variant of these vehicles.

The Punch’s exclusive features include front USB ports, anti-glare IRVM, 90-degree door opening, 2 drive modes, leather-wrapped gear selector, dual-tone dashboard, rain-sensing wiper, etc. Further, it offers front foglights, auto headlamps, a seven-inch TFT instrument cluster, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit by Harman. It also has halogen plus projector front lights with LED DRLs.

On the other hand, the Renault Kiger’s exclusive offerings include air quality control, a vanity mirror, rear a/c vents, a centre console with storage, a dual-tone horn, LED headlights, a tyre pressure monitor, speed sensing door lock, and a wireless charger. Further, it has an eight-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit and an Arkamys-sourced audio system.

On the safety front, the top variant of the Punch has dual airbags, while the Kiger’s top variant has four. Both have ABS with EBD, ESC, child safety locks, traction control, anti-glare IRVM, a rear camera with rear sensors, and more.

Prices and Variants

The Punch has four trims: Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative. The new Camo edition is offered on the Adventure and Accomplished trims. It has a total of twenty-six variants. The Tata Punch’s price starts at Rs 5.59 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.29 lakh.

In contrast, the Kiger has five trims: Authentic, Evolution, Evolution Plus, Techno, and Emotion. It has a total of nine variants. The Renault Kiger’s price starts at Rs 6.30 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.30 lakh. All are ex-showroom prices in Delhi.
