RHFAC certification readinessRHFAC stands for Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification, which rates buildings and sites across Canada. Strong means finding gaps before reviewers do. This article outlines what preparation involves and where it tends to pay off.

What Readiness Means

A readiness review asks whether a design, completed development or existing facility is prepared for certification or authority review. It targe

ts gaps that could affect the outcome, from accessible routes and entrances to signage, service areas, emergency provisions and supporting documentation.

The purpose is to reduce approval risk early, while changes are still easy to make.

It also helps teams set realistic expectations. Knowing which items are likely to raise questions lets a project manager plan time and budget before a formal date is fixed.

Readiness is not a substitute for the formal review. It is preparation, giving the team a chance to fix what it can before reviewers ever see the submission.

Different project types have different needs. A design may need clearer drawings, while an existing facility may need a closer look at what has actually been built.

Some teams assume certification is mostly about the finished building. In practice, much of the outcome rests on how clearly the design intent, site conditions and supporting records line up.

The Desktop Review

Preparation starts at a desk. Reviewers go through drawings, checklists and supporting documents, then look for information or evidence that is missing.

This step often exposes simple problems that would otherwise surface late: a drawing that does not show a key provision, or a checklist with no proof behind it. Fixing these costs little at this stage.

A good habit is to keep drawings, checklists and records in one organised set. When everything can be found quickly, the review moves faster and the gaps stand out.

Checklists deserve special care. A completed checklist with no supporting evidence invites questions, whereas one backed by drawings and records answers them in advance. That is the quiet benefit of RHFAC certification work: it replaces assumptions with documented answers.

Missing information can stall a review, so create a simple tracker listing each item, who owns it and when it is due. The tracker keeps work moving and makes outstanding gaps visible to everyone.

The Site Readiness Review

Where it applies, a site readiness review checks conditions in person. For an existing facility, a building accessibility audit is the natural companion, because it records measurements, photographs and user routes on the ground.

The audit shows what is actually built, and readiness work compares that with what a reviewer will expect to see. Used together, a building accessibility audit and a desktop review leave fewer unknowns.

For a design that is not yet built, the site review gives way to closer scrutiny of drawings. For a completed development, it confirms that delivery matched the design. For an existing facility, it records the conditions users actually meet.

Readiness work also looks at how a person moves from approach to entrance to facilities, because breaks in the route can undermine otherwise sound elements. Combining desk and site work catches mismatches, since a difference between drawing and building is easier to resolve before a reviewer notices it.

Evidence, Recommendations and Credibility

A readiness review identifies non-compliances and approval risks and gives practical recommendations before formal submission or inspection. It also helps organise evidence, drawings and compliance records, which improves submission quality and reduces late-stage redesign.

Credentials matter when choosing support. Team members at Vortex Access hold Rick Hansen Foundation certification to provide RHFAC ratings and reviews across Canada. Whoever you choose, ask how they will approach RHFAC certification readiness for your specific project.

Recommendations should be practical and sequenced. A short list of actions that can be completed before submission is more useful than a long report nobody can act on. Allow time for corrections too, because closing gaps, updating drawings and re-organising records all take effort.

Finally, decide who will hold the final package. One person responsible for evidence, drawings and compliance records prevents version problems and shortens the final check.

Conclusion

building accessibility auditPreparation is what separates a smooth review from a stressful one. Gather your drawings and supporting records, check them for gaps and confirm what is really built on site. A is a practical way to verify existing conditions, and the Vortex Access team can discuss how it could fit into your certification plan.
