Strawberries are one of the most profitable fruit crops in the world, loved by consumers for their sweetness, color, and versatility. Demand stays strong throughout the year, and buyers pay premium prices for fresh berries outside the traditional field season. However, strawberries are delicate and highly sensitive to rain, disease, and temperature extremes. Large-scale growers increasingly rely on protected cultivation to deliver consistent quality and extend their harvest periods.

The Challenges of Field Strawberries

Open-field strawberries face many threats. Rain causes fruit rot and splitting, frost damages flowers, and heavy sun can soften fruit. Pests such as birds, slugs, and insects reduce marketable yield. Soil-borne diseases can build up over time. These risks make field production unpredictable, with significant losses in difficult seasons. Protected structures address many of these challenges at once.

Why Large Farms Choose Connected Structures

Strawberry farms supplying supermarkets need large growing areas with uniform conditions. Connected multi-span structures provide wide, open spaces where long rows of elevated gutters can be installed efficiently. Uniform climate across the whole facility leads to consistent ripening, simplifying harvest planning and labor management for large production volumes.

Tabletop Growing Systems

multi span greenhouse manufacturerWorking with an experienced like Sainpoly helps strawberry growers design structures suited to tabletop systems. In these systems, plants grow in substrate-filled gutters raised to waist height. This keeps fruit clean, improves airflow around plants, and allows workers to harvest standing up. Tabletop growing increases picking speed, reduces labor strain, and supports higher yields per square meter.

Climate Control for Quality Berries

Strawberries prefer moderate temperatures, with cool nights helping fruit develop sweetness and firmness. Excessive heat reduces fruit size and shelf life, while cold slows growth. Ventilation, shading, heating, and cooling systems help maintain ideal conditions. Humidity control is especially important to prevent gray mold and powdery mildew, which can quickly damage fruit.

Extending the Season

Multi-span greenhouses allow growers to start harvesting earlier in spring and continue later into autumn. With heating and suitable varieties, some farms produce strawberries almost year-round. Everbearing and day-neutral varieties are particularly well suited to protected production. Extended seasons help growers capture higher prices when field strawberries are scarce.

Irrigation and Fertigation

Strawberries in substrate systems rely on drip irrigation and fertigation for water and nutrients. Precise feeding influences fruit size, sweetness, and firmness. Drainage can be collected and reused, improving water efficiency. Automated systems adjust irrigation according to weather and plant needs, maintaining consistent crop performance.

Pollination and Pest Management

Bumblebees and honeybees are commonly used for strawberry pollination inside greenhouses, improving fruit shape and yield. Insect screens keep pollinators inside and pests out. Biological control agents manage spider mites, aphids, and thrips. Integrated pest management reduces chemical use and produces clean berries that meet strict retail standards.

Labor Efficiency and Logistics

Strawberry harvesting is labor-intensive, so efficient layouts are essential. Wide aisles, trolleys, and organized row arrangements help workers move quickly. Cool storage near the greenhouse preserves freshness after picking. Multi-span structures provide space for these logistical needs, allowing farms to handle high volumes efficiently.

Scaling Up Strawberry Production

For growers looking to expand strawberry production, multi-span greenhouses offer a scalable and reliable solution. They provide protection, climate control, and efficient layouts that support high yields and consistent quality. Sainpoly designs structures tailored to strawberry farming, helping growers meet strong market demand and build profitable operations throughout the year.
