Why the Sammed Shikharji Yatra is sacred

Learn about the Tirthankaras associated with the hill

According to Jain tradition, 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras attained moksha at Sammed Shikharji. In Jain belief, moksha means release from the cycle of birth and death. The hill is therefore among the faith’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Pilgrims come to honor the Tirthankaras and follow a route linked to their liberation.

Understand the role of the tonks

Along the pilgrimage path, visitors reach tonks, sacred memorial shrines associated with the Tirthankaras. These sites give pilgrims places to pause, pray, and pay respects. Many walkers visit the tonks as part of the full circuit, though the order and time spent at each point can vary. Follow posted directions and local religious guidance at each shrine.

Know what to expect on the traditional foot pilgrimage

The traditional foot pilgrimage involves a long climb, visits to sacred points, and a return descent. The path includes uneven stretches, so the day can feel strenuous even for regular walkers. A full round trip is often cited at roughly 27 kilometres, but the distance depends on the route in use. Confirm the current path locally rather than relying on a fixed estimate.

Choose between walking and available transport options

Walking is central to the pilgrimage for many visitors, but route arrangements can differ. Some pilgrims may find local assistance or other transport options, depending on current rules and availability. Ask a trusted local organizer or relevant local authority what is permitted before you make plans. Don’t assume an option will be available on your chosen date.

Plan for the time and terrain

Allow more time than a simple distance estimate suggests. Uneven ground, stops at tonks, crowds, and weather can all affect your pace. Start only when you have a clear sense of the route and local timings, and keep enough time for the return. A long day is easier to manage when you don’t rush.

Prepare well for a safer, more comfortable yatra

Build stamina and pack essential supplies

If you’re not used to long walks, practise on gradually longer routes before your visit. Wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear that you’ve already tested, rather than new shoes on the trek. Carry water, weather-appropriate layers, basic first-aid supplies, and any personal medication you need. Pack light enough to walk safely.

Check health, weather, and local arrangements

Think about your health and mobility before choosing to walk the full route. Check the weather forecast, then confirm current timings, path conditions, and available services with local authorities or a trusted pilgrimage organizer. Conditions can change, so ask again close to your visit. If you have a health concern, seek medical advice before attempting a strenuous climb.

Travel at a realistic pace

Start early if local guidance permits, and take breaks before you feel worn out. Drink water regularly and stop if you feel pain, dizzy, or unusually tired. Older pilgrims and anyone with health concerns should discuss the walk with a medical professional first. There’s no benefit in pushing through a warning sign.

Book a suitable place to stay

Accommodation choices and facilities can vary with season and demand. Book ahead during busy pilgrimage periods, then confirm your reservation directly with the place you choose. Ask about meals, accessibility, check-in time, and any facilities you’ll need. A clear plan for your stay makes it easier to focus on the pilgrimage.

Keep a flexible itinerary

Leave time for rest before and after the walk, along with possible weather delays and local observances. Avoid planning a tight connection immediately after the trek. Recheck travel times and services close to departure, and adjust your schedule if local guidance changes.

Respect Jain customs and help protect the pilgrimage site

Follow local religious guidance

Observe signs and instructions at the shrines, and ask before photographing people or rituals. Customs around food, worship, and conduct may vary by place, so follow the guidance given locally. Keep a respectful distance when others are praying.

Keep the route clean and low-impact

Carry your waste back with you and use designated facilities where available. Don’t damage plants, disturb wildlife, or leave items along the path. Small choices help protect the hill for pilgrims and local communities.

Be considerate of other pilgrims

Keep noise low near sacred points and give worshippers room to pray. On narrow paths, move carefully and let others pass when it’s safe. A calm pace and thoughtful conduct make the route more comfortable for everyone.
