Diesel engines are widely used in vehicles, industrial equipment, construction machinery, and diesel generators because of their reliability and high power output. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. Modern emission-control technologies help reduce these pollutants and support cleaner engine operation.

SCR technology reduces diesel engine emissionsOne important technology used for NOx control is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). by treating exhaust gases after they leave the engine. This article explains how SCR works, its main components, benefits, and how it differs from other emission-control technologies.

What Is SCR Technology?

Selective Catalytic ReductionSCR stands for . It is an exhaust after-treatment technology primarily designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines.

An SCR system is installed in the exhaust line and generally uses a urea-based fluid such as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or AdBlue. The fluid is injected into the exhaust stream in a controlled quantity.

The urea-based fluid produces ammonia under suitable exhaust conditions. The ammonia then reacts with NOx over an SCR catalyst, converting it mainly into nitrogen and water.

How Does SCR Technology Reduce Diesel Engine Emissions?

The working process of an SCR system can be explained in simple steps.

1. Diesel Combustion Produces NOx

During diesel combustion, high temperatures inside the engine can cause nitrogen and oxygen to form nitrogen oxides. These gases then travel through the exhaust system.

2. DEF or AdBlue Is Injected

A dosing system injects a controlled amount of DEF or AdBlue into the exhaust before it reaches the SCR catalyst.

3. Ammonia Is Produced

The urea-based fluid breaks down under suitable exhaust conditions and produces ammonia, which acts as the reducing agent.

4. NOx Reacts With Ammonia

As exhaust gases pass through the SCR catalyst, ammonia reacts with nitrogen oxides. The chemical reaction converts NOx mainly into nitrogen and water.

5. Treated Exhaust Leaves the System

After the reaction, the exhaust contains less NOx when the SCR system is correctly designed, operated, and maintained.

SCR technology reduces diesel engine emissionsThis is how , particularly nitrogen oxide emissions.

Main Components of an SCR System

A typical SCR system can include:

DEF or AdBlue tank
Urea dosing system
Injection nozzle
SCR catalyst
NOx sensors
Exhaust temperature sensors
Electronic control unit
Exhaust piping
Monitoring and diagnostic components

All these components work together to control fluid dosing and exhaust treatment.

Why Is SCR Technology Important?

NOx is an important pollutant produced by diesel combustion. Stricter emission requirements for modern diesel engines have increased the importance of advanced exhaust after-treatment systems.

SCR provides a method of treating NOx in the exhaust rather than relying only on changes inside the engine.

This makes SCR an important part of emission-control systems used in many modern diesel applications.

Benefits of SCR Technology

Effective NOx Reduction

The main purpose of SCR is to reduce NOx emissions. A correctly designed and maintained SCR system can provide significant NOx control.

Suitable for Modern Diesel Engines

SCR is widely used with modern diesel engines that require advanced exhaust after-treatment to meet applicable emission requirements.

Works With Other Technologies

SCR can be combined with other emission-control technologies because different systems can target different pollutants.

For example, a diesel particulate filter may be used for particulate matter, while SCR primarily focuses on NOx.

Supports Cleaner Operation

By treating exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere, SCR can help reduce NOx emissions from diesel engines.

Does SCR Reduce Black Smoke?

NOx emissionsSCR primarily targets , not particulate matter or soot.

Therefore, SCR should not be considered a direct replacement for a particulate filter. Black smoke may be caused by problems such as poor combustion, excessive fueling, restricted air supply, faulty injectors, or inadequate engine maintenance.

The appropriate emission-control technology depends on the type of pollutant that needs to be controlled.

SCR Technology in Diesel Generators

SCR can also be used as part of the emission-control system in certain modern diesel generator applications.

For a diesel generator, the SCR system needs to be correctly matched with the engine and exhaust configuration. Factors such as exhaust temperature, NOx levels, dosing, sensors, and catalyst performance can influence its operation.

RECD for DG setFor applicable older DG sets, a may be considered as a different retrofit emission-control approach, depending on the specific engine, certification, and applicable requirements.

SCR and RECD are not the same technology. Their applications and emission-control functions can differ.

SCR vs RECD for DG Set

RECD for DG setBoth SCR and are associated with diesel emission control, but they work differently.

SCR primarily controls NOx through a urea-based reducing agent and catalyst.

RECD for DG setA is a retrofit emission-control device intended for applicable in-use diesel generator applications and is generally focused on particulate emission control according to its applicable certification and technical requirements.

Therefore, the correct solution depends on factors such as:

DG set make and model
Engine family
Generator capacity
Emission requirements
Existing exhaust configuration
Applicable certification
Operating conditions

What Happens If an SCR System Is Not Maintained?

Poor maintenance can affect SCR performance. Problems may occur because of contaminated or unsuitable DEF, dosing-system faults, sensor problems, catalyst issues, or unsuitable operating conditions.

Depending on the engine design, SCR faults may trigger warning indicators or protective operating strategies.

Regular inspection and servicing should therefore follow the engine and SCR manufacturer's recommendations.

How to Maintain an SCR System

Good maintenance practices include:

Use the correct DEF/AdBlue specified by the manufacturer.
Prevent contamination of the DEF system.
Check warning lights and diagnostic codes.
Inspect dosing components and connections.
Check sensors and exhaust components.
Follow the recommended service schedule.
Use qualified technicians for major repairs.

Proper maintenance helps the SCR system continue operating as designed.

FAQs

What is SCR technology in a diesel engine?

SCR, or Selective Catalytic Reduction, is an exhaust after-treatment technology primarily designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines.

How does SCR reduce diesel emissions?

SCR injects a urea-based fluid into the exhaust. The resulting ammonia reacts with NOx over a catalyst and converts it mainly into nitrogen and water.

What emissions does SCR control?

SCR primarily controls nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. It does not directly replace technologies designed specifically to control particulate matter.

Is AdBlue the same as diesel fuel?

No. AdBlue or DEF is a separate urea-based fluid used by SCR systems. It is not diesel fuel and should not be added to the diesel fuel tank.

Can SCR be used in diesel generators?

Yes, SCR can be part of the emission-control system in certain modern diesel generator applications. The system must be compatible with the specific engine and exhaust configuration.

Is SCR the same as RECD?

No. SCR and RECD are different emission-control technologies. SCR primarily targets NOx, while applicable RECD systems are generally designed for particulate emission control in in-use DG-set applications.

Conclusion

SCR is an important exhaust after-treatment technology for controlling NOx emissions from diesel engines. It uses a urea-based fluid and catalyst to convert NOx mainly into nitrogen and water.
