I'm not a pro contractor or a sawmill owner, but I build a lot of things around my house. Decks, bookshelves, a shed, some furniture. Over the years I've learned that lumber math is the difference between a smooth project and a disaster. I used to do everything by hand, and I made every mistake you can imagine. Overbuying, underbuying, wrong joist sizes, you name it. Then I found. Now I use their , , , and for almost every project. I wanted to share how these tools have helped me and why I think they're worth trying.

The Board Foot Calculator

I used to measure each board, convert to feet, multiply, and divide by 144. It worked, but it was slow. And if I had a bunch of different boards, I'd lose track. The on this site lets me enter thickness, width, length, and quantity. I can add multiple rows. That's perfect when I'm buying rough hardwood from a local mill. A standard often only does one board at a time. The here totals everything for me. That alone has saved me from overordering and underordering. I also like that it shows the formula, so I can double-check if I want.

The Plywood Calculator

I used to estimate by square footage, then add a random waste factor. Sometimes I ended up with extra sheets. Sometimes I had to make a second trip to the store. The on lets me enter project dimensions, sheet size, and waste percentage. It tells me exactly how many sheets to buy. It also helps with odd-shaped cuts because I can break the project into sections. If you work with sheet goods, a dedicated is much better than guessing.

The Floor Joist Calculator

But the gave me a fast starting point. I could plug in joist size, spacing, species, and span. It showed me if a 2x8 would work or if I needed a 2x10. I used it to compare 2x8s and 2x10s for a 12-foot span. It helped me choose 2x10s at 16 inches on center. That gave me confidence before I talked to my inspector. If you are doing any structural work, a is worth bookmarking.

The Log Board Foot Calculator

I never knew what to charge or how much lumber I would get. The supports Doyle, Scribner, and International scales. You enter diameter and length, and it estimates board feet. It's not perfect because taper and defects matter, but it's close enough for planning. It also helps when buying logs from a landowner. I compared it to actual mill yield on a few pine logs, and it was within a reasonable range.

Final Thoughts

I still keep a tape measure and calculator nearby, but the , , , , , and cover most of what I need. The site works on mobile, loads fast, and does not bury the tools in ads. That matters when you are standing in a lumber yard or on a job site.
