Generative search is changing the way B2B buyers discover companies, compare suppliers and investigate solutions.

For years, organic visibility was largely associated with appearing in traditional search results. That remains important, but platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI-powered search experiences have introduced a new discovery layer.

Users can now ask complex questions such as:

Which B2B marketing agencies in Spain have experience with industrial companies and AI search visibility?

What companies specialize in Generative Engine Optimization?

Which provider should I consider for GEO, SEO and demand generation?

These questions require much more than matching a single keyword. A generative system may need to understand companies, services, industries, locations, expertise and external references before producing an answer.

This is where Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, becomes relevant.

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization is the process of improving a company’s digital presence so that generative systems can more easily discover, understand, retrieve and use its information when creating answers.

Traditional SEO normally focuses on objectives such as rankings, organic traffic, crawlability, indexation, keyword visibility and backlinks.

GEO expands that objective.

A B2B company may also want to become:

Mentioned in AI-generated answers.

Cited as a source.

Included in recommendation sets.

Associated with particular services or industries.

Recognized as a specialist in a specific discipline.

Retrieved for relevant commercial questions.

The objective is therefore broader than positioning a single URL.

A strong GEO strategy helps create a digital footprint that makes the business itself easier to understand as an entity.

GEO does not replace SEO

Generative Engine Optimization should not be treated as a replacement for traditional SEO.

AI-driven systems still need information that can be discovered and interpreted.

That means many SEO fundamentals remain essential:

Crawlable websites.

Correct indexation.

Clear site architecture.

Strong internal linking.

Useful content.

External authority.

Consistent company information.

Technical performance.

A business with serious technical SEO problems is unlikely to solve its visibility issues simply by adding content about artificial intelligence.

GEO works best as an additional layer built on top of solid SEO foundations.

Why GEO matters for B2B companies

B2B buyer journeys are particularly compatible with conversational search.

Business buyers often need answers to complex questions.

For example:

Which solution is most suitable for my company size?

Which provider has experience in my industry?

What is the difference between two platforms?

Which agency specializes in this service?

What should I evaluate before choosing a supplier?

These queries involve multiple attributes.

A system may need to understand geography, company size, specialization, industry, services, technologies and business model.

For this reason, GEO is not simply about writing articles that contain AI-related keywords.

It is about building enough contextual information for a company to be correctly associated with relevant business needs.

Entity clarity is fundamental

One of the most important concepts in GEO is entity clarity.

A search or generative system should be able to understand relationships such as:

Company provides service.

Company works with industry.

Company operates in market.

Company specializes in discipline.

Company serves type of customer.

For example:

Company X provides Generative Engine Optimization services for B2B businesses in Spain.

That statement establishes several relationships.

Company X is an organization.

GEO is a service.

B2B companies are the target market.

Spain is the geographic market.

When similar information appears consistently across the website and external sources, the business becomes easier to classify.

Build specific service pages

A company offering multiple services should avoid describing everything on one generic page.

Important services should normally have dedicated URLs.

For example:

SEO.

GEO.

Paid Media.

Marketing consulting.

Industrial marketing.

Demand generation.

Each page can then develop its own semantic context.

A GEO service page could explain:

What GEO is.

Who needs the service.

What problems it solves.

How the methodology works.

How visibility is measured.

Which AI platforms are considered.

How GEO relates to SEO.

What role external authority plays.

Which business use cases are relevant.

This helps both users and automated systems understand the page more accurately.

Understand query fan-out

A complex generative query may trigger multiple secondary information needs.

This process is often described as query fan-out.

Imagine a user asking:

Which GEO agency is suitable for a Spanish industrial B2B company?

To produce a useful answer, a system may need information about:

GEO agencies.

B2B marketing agencies.

Industrial marketing.

Spanish providers.

AI search optimization.

Company expertise.

External references.

Customer profile.

This means a business should not optimize only for a single phrase.

It needs coverage across the wider semantic environment surrounding its services.

Build topical authority

A single GEO page will rarely be enough to cover an entire subject.

A stronger strategy creates supporting content around the main service.

For example:

What is GEO?

GEO vs SEO.

How to appear in ChatGPT.

How generative engines select sources.

How to measure AI visibility.

What is AEO?

How structured data supports semantic clarity.

How link building relates to GEO.

How entity SEO works.

How to monitor brand mentions in AI systems.

These pages can reinforce one another through internal linking.

The result is a much clearer topic cluster.

Create content that is easy to extract

Generative systems benefit from information that is clearly structured.

This does not mean every answer must be extremely short.

It means the content should reduce ambiguity.

Useful formats include:

Clear headings.

Direct definitions.

Numbered processes.

Checklists.

Tables.

Comparisons.

FAQs.

Examples.

Short summaries.

For example:

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization is the process of improving the digital presence of a brand so that generative systems can more easily discover, interpret and use its information in AI-generated answers.

A direct definition like this is easier to process than several vague paragraphs.

External sources matter

A company cannot rely only on its own website.

External references can provide additional evidence about what a business does.

Relevant sources can include:

Industry publications.

Business directories.

Professional profiles.

Interviews.

Podcasts.

Association websites.

Partner pages.

External articles.

Comparison pages.

Case studies.

This becomes especially valuable when several independent sources describe the company in similar terms.

Corroboration strengthens the entity

Consider two situations.

In the first, a company says on its own website that it specializes in GEO.

In the second, the company says this on its website, but external publications also describe it as a B2B agency with experience in GEO, AI search and digital visibility.

The second situation creates stronger corroboration.

Several sources are connecting the same company with similar concepts.

This is more useful than relying entirely on self-description.

The role of link building in GEO

Backlinks remain relevant because they can contribute to authority, discovery, referral traffic and topical relationships.

However, context becomes particularly important.

A link inside an article about generative search, B2B marketing and artificial intelligence has greater semantic coherence than an unrelated backlink placed on a generic page.

For businesses operating in Spanish-speaking markets, specialized services in posicionamiento GEO can help combine traditional SEO, entity optimization, external authority, content structure and monitoring across generative platforms.

The goal should not be to accumulate links without context.

The objective is to create a coherent external footprint around the company and its areas of expertise.

Brand mentions also matter

A brand mention can create useful semantic associations even when there is no clickable link.

For example:

Company X is a B2B agency specializing in GEO and industrial marketing.

This statement connects the brand with several entities and concepts.

A broader authority strategy can therefore include:

Backlinks.

Brand mentions.

Expert quotes.

Interviews.

Profiles.

Media references.

Industry directories.

Structured data and semantic clarity

Structured data can help describe specific entities and relationships.

Depending on the page, relevant schema types can include:

Organization.

LocalBusiness.

Service.

Person.

Article.

BreadcrumbList.

FAQPage.

Structured data does not guarantee that a company will appear in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.

However, it can support a clearer semantic architecture.

Consistency across digital properties

Company information should be coherent across different platforms.

Review elements such as:

Business name.

Corporate description.

Services.

Target industries.

Location.

Contact information.

Professional profiles.

Social accounts.

Core expertise.

Contradictory information can make an entity harder to classify.

Consistency therefore matters.

Publish original information

Generic content is increasingly easy to produce.

B2B companies can differentiate themselves by publishing information based on real experience.

Examples include:

Original research.

Benchmarks.

Experiments.

Internal methodologies.

Survey results.

Sector reports.

Anonymized project data.

Case studies.

This type of content can also attract natural backlinks and editorial citations.

Case studies are especially useful

Case studies can connect multiple entities within a single piece of content.

A strong case study may explain:

Who the client was.

Which sector they operate in.

What problem existed.

Which methodology was used.

Which services were involved.

What result was achieved.

For example:

A GEO strategy was implemented for a Spanish industrial B2B company to improve visibility across generative search queries.

This statement creates clear relationships between GEO, Spain, B2B, industry and AI search.

That level of context is valuable.

Comparison content and recommendation queries

AI assistants are frequently used to compare options.

Typical queries include:

Best GEO tools for B2B companies.

Best GEO agencies in Spain.

GEO vs SEO.

Best AI visibility monitoring platforms.

ChatGPT vs Perplexity for B2B research.

Comparison content can therefore be strategically useful.

The important point is to evaluate every option using the same criteria.

Possible attributes might include:

B2B specialization.

GEO capabilities.

Technical SEO.

AI monitoring.

Industry experience.

Geographic coverage.

Content strategy.

This creates content that is easier to interpret and compare.

Technical SEO remains essential

A GEO strategy should never ignore technical foundations.

Important areas to review include:

Robots.txt.

Meta robots.

Canonical tags.

HTTP status codes.

XML sitemaps.

Redirects.

Internal linking.

JavaScript rendering.

Page speed.

Mobile usability.

Crawl depth.

Important pages should be accessible and indexable.

A page that cannot be reliably crawled or understood has a weaker foundation for both traditional and generative visibility.

Monitor AI crawler policies

Businesses should also understand how their robots.txt configuration affects different automated systems.

Search crawling, AI retrieval and model training are not necessarily the same thing.

Organizations should make deliberate decisions about crawler access instead of copying rules without understanding what they do.

Strengthen authorship

B2B content can benefit from clear authorship.

Where appropriate, show:

Author name.

Professional position.

Relevant experience.

Company affiliation.

Expert profile.

The objective is not to invent expertise.

It is to make real expertise easier to identify.

Digital PR and GEO

Digital PR can contribute significantly to GEO by creating external references.

Useful assets include:

Original studies.

Trend reports.

Industry surveys.

Market analysis.

Benchmark reports.

Proprietary data.

These assets can generate media mentions, backlinks, citations and branded searches.

They also expand the number of external sources connected with a company.

How to measure GEO

Generative visibility does not currently have one universal equivalent to a traditional ranking position.

However, several useful indicators can be monitored.

Brand mentions

How often does the company appear for relevant prompts?

Citations

Is the company website used as a visible source?

Prompt coverage

For how many monitored queries does the brand appear?

Share of voice

How frequently does the brand appear compared with competitors?

Source coverage

Which external sources mentioning the company are being surfaced?

Referral traffic

Are generative platforms sending visitors to the website?

Conversions

Does AI-referred traffic generate leads or opportunities?

Create a stable prompt set

Measurement becomes more useful when the same prompts are monitored consistently.

A B2B company might track questions such as:

Best GEO agency in Spain.

B2B GEO agency.

AI search optimization agency.

How to appear in ChatGPT.

GEO consultancy for industrial companies.

SEO agency for artificial intelligence visibility.

The same prompt set can then be reviewed over time.

This creates a baseline for comparison.

Monitor competitors

GEO analysis should also include competitors.

Track:

Which companies appear.

How often they appear.

What attributes are associated with them.

Which sources mention them.

Which pages are cited.

Which comparison sites include them.

This can reveal important authority gaps.

For example, a competitor may appear frequently because it is present in several industry directories or recommendation pages.

That immediately suggests potential opportunities.

Do not focus only on ChatGPT

ChatGPT is important, but it is only one part of the ecosystem.

A broader strategy can also consider:

Gemini.

Perplexity.

Copilot.

Google AI-powered search experiences.

Other emerging generative platforms.

Different systems may rely on different sources.

A diversified visibility strategy is therefore more resilient.

Common GEO mistakes

One common mistake is publishing large quantities of thin content.

More pages do not automatically create authority.

Another mistake is repeating the same keyword excessively.

Generative systems require context, not simply exact-match phrases.

Ignoring external authority is another problem.

A company cannot create every credibility signal on its own website.

Unsupported claims should also be avoided.

Information should be verifiable wherever possible.

Finally, companies should not measure GEO using only traditional rankings.

Generative visibility requires additional monitoring.

A practical GEO framework for B2B companies

A structured GEO program can be divided into several phases.

Phase 1: Audit

Review current organic visibility, AI mentions, technical SEO, content, entities, backlinks and competitors.

Phase 2: Prompt research

Identify commercial, informational, comparison and recommendation queries.

Phase 3: Entity optimization

Clarify the company description, services, sectors, target audience, locations and key experts.

Phase 4: Content development

Create service pages, guides, FAQs, comparisons, case studies and original research.

Phase 5: External authority

Develop link building, digital PR, directory presence, expert contributions and relevant mentions.

Phase 6: Monitoring

Track prompts, citations, mentions, competitors, sources, referral traffic and conversions.

The future of B2B search

Search is becoming increasingly conversational.

Future buyer journeys are likely to combine:

Traditional search.

Generative answers.

AI assistants.

Recommendation systems.

Autonomous agents.

For B2B companies, this means visibility will depend increasingly on being part of an information ecosystem that these systems can access, interpret and trust.

There is no single shortcut.

The strongest strategy combines technical SEO, content, entities, external authority, brand mentions, citations and measurement.

Conclusion

Generative Engine Optimization represents an important evolution in B2B digital visibility.

Traditional SEO remains fundamental, but companies should also consider how generative systems discover, interpret and use information.

A strong GEO strategy should make a company easy to crawl, easy to understand, semantically consistent, supported by external sources and clearly associated with its core areas of expertise.

The objective is not to manipulate AI systems.

The objective is to create a digital presence that clearly communicates what the company does, who it serves and why it is relevant.

When those signals remain consistent across the corporate website, supporting content and external sources, the company has a stronger foundation for being retrieved, mentioned and cited across generative search experiences.
