There’s something distinctive about a proper British pub. It might be a centuries-old building with low ceilings and timber details, a neighbourhood local where generations of residents have gathered, or a country pub where a walk through the surrounding countryside ends with a generous meal.

The best pubs tend to have more than a good menu or an attractive interior. They have personality. They feel connected to their surroundings, offer food worth sitting down for, and create the sort of relaxed setting where lunch can stretch into the afternoon and a quick catch-up can easily become a longer gathering.

From historic Richmond locals to country pubs beside Windsor Great Park, here are some of the places that capture different sides of the traditional British pub experience.

The Old Ship, Richmond

The venue describes itself as one of Richmond's oldest pubs, with wood panelling, a double-sided bar and a courtyard that opens up during warmer weather. It's the sort of venue that fits naturally into the everyday side of British pub culture — somewhere to meet friends, sit down for a meal and enjoy an unhurried afternoon or evening.

What Makes a Proper British Pub?

There isn't one formula. A proper British pub might be a centuries-old building on a village green, a country pub beside a walking route, or a neighbourhood local tucked away on a residential street.

But the strongest examples tend to share a few qualities: character, hospitality, good food, a sense of place and an atmosphere that encourages people to stay awhile.

That variety is ultimately what makes British pub culture so enduring. There’s no single definition of the perfect pub — and that's precisely the point.
