Let's be honest with ourselves, all the parents out there. When was the last time you had a real conversation with your child? When was the last time you asked, "How are you really doing?" or "Is something bothering you?" When was the last time you reassured them that no matter what they are going through, you will always have their back and listen without judging?

Many parents unintentionally focus so much on their child's physical health that they overlook something equally important—their mental well-being. A child may appear physically healthy, smile in front of everyone, and still be silently struggling with anxiety, stress, loneliness, or depression. Mental health is not a sign of weakness; it is an essential part of a child's overall development and deserves the same care and attention as physical health.

To better understand this issue, let us consider a simple fictional anecdote.

In a small town lived a boy with his parents, who were a little old-school in their thinking. One day, a group of older boys bullied him, and the entire school made fun of him. Heartbroken, he returned home and told his parents everything that had happened and how depressed he was feeling. However, his father's response shattered him.

"Don't act. We know this is just an excuse to avoid going to school."

The boy, who had always idolised his father, was left in tears. Every morning he stood at the school gate for a few extra seconds, hoping someone would ask why he no longer wanted to enter. Since he couldn't even express his pain to his own parents, loneliness slowly consumed him from within. One day, unable to bear it any longer, he took the unthinkable step of ending his own life. Only after his death did his parents discover that he had been telling the truth all along. They realised their mistake, but by then, it was too late.

A child's first safe place should always be their parents. The greatest gift a parent can give is not just food, education, or financial security, but the confidence that their child can come to them without the fear of being judged or misunderstood.

So, my humble request to all the parents out there is this: please be there when your child needs you the most, rather than regretting your absence after everything is over. Sometimes, what a child needs most is not expensive gifts or luxurious comforts, but the attention, understanding, and presence of their parents. Children don't always need parents who have all the answers; they simply need parents who are willing to listen.
