AI infrastructure places demanding requirements on computing equipment, electrical systems and cooling facilities. As organisations expand their use of model training, inference and other data-intensive workloads, managing electricity consumption becomes an important operational priority.

Effective data centre energy management involves more than monitoring utility bills. It requires a coordinated strategy covering power distribution, computing workloads, cooling, performance measurement and energy sourcing. The following approaches can help organisations identify practical improvements while protecting reliability.

1. Establish an Accurate Energy Baseline

Before changing infrastructure or operating procedures, organisations need to understand their current energy consumption. Collecting data from facility meters, server systems, cooling equipment and power distribution units provides a clearer view of where electricity is used.

A baseline also makes it easier to assess whether changes deliver measurable improvements. Comparisons should account for workload levels, weather conditions and facility operating requirements.

2. Optimise Cooling for Actual Workload Demand

AI servers can generate substantial heat, particularly when high-performance accelerators operate at high utilisation. Cooling systems should therefore be evaluated against rack density, airflow patterns and thermal requirements.

Operators can examine hot-aisle and cold-aisle containment, fan controls, temperature settings and cooling equipment performance. Liquid cooling may be suitable for high-density environments where traditional air cooling becomes less practical.

Any adjustments should remain within equipment specifications and be tested against operational requirements.

3. Apply AI-Based Energy Forecasting

Energy demand forecasting can help operators anticipate changes in electricity requirements before workloads reach their peak. Models can use historical consumption, planned computing activity, equipment utilisation and environmental readings to estimate future demand.

For example, a scheduled model training workload may require additional power and cooling capacity. Forecasting can help teams check whether the infrastructure is prepared and identify potential constraints before the workload begins.

Predictions should be validated against actual operating data. Forecasting systems can support planning, but they cannot eliminate unexpected demand or replace electrical capacity assessments.

4. Improve Workload Scheduling and Resource Utilisation

Not every computing task needs to run immediately. Where deadlines and service requirements allow, organisations can schedule flexible workloads to reduce unnecessary demand peaks or take advantage of favourable electricity conditions.

Workload consolidation may also help reduce energy use when underutilised servers can be safely placed into lower-power states or decommissioned. However, operators must account for redundancy, performance, migration overhead and the energy needed to maintain standby capacity.

5. Track PUE Alongside Other Performance Indicators

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) measures total facility energy relative to IT equipment energy. It helps teams assess the energy overhead associated with supporting computing infrastructure.

However, PUE should not be used in isolation. Organisations should also monitor total electricity consumption, server utilisation, cooling energy and relevant environmental indicators. These measures provide a better understanding of whether efficiency improvements are meaningful in practice.

6. Integrate Renewable Energy Where Practical

Renewable energy integration can support sustainability objectives, depending on the electricity procurement model and local energy availability. Organisations can evaluate renewable electricity contracts, on-site generation and suitable energy storage options based on their infrastructure and operating requirements.

Flexible workloads may also be scheduled around periods of greater renewable electricity availability where technically and commercially practical. These decisions should consider reliability, workload deadlines and the actual electricity supply arrangements.

7. Introduce Continuous Monitoring and Improvement

Energy management should be an ongoing operational process rather than a one-time project. Automated alerts can identify unusual consumption, equipment degradation and unexpected cooling behaviour.

Teams should regularly review energy performance, investigate anomalies and test proposed changes before wider deployment. Clear ownership and consistent reporting help turn monitoring data into actionable operational improvements.

Conclusion

AI-driven infrastructure requires a practical and integrated approach to energy management. Establishing an accurate baseline, optimising cooling, forecasting demand, scheduling workloads and measuring performance together can help organisations improve visibility and identify efficiency opportunities. Sustainable results depend on reliable data, carefully tested changes and a continuous focus on operational performance.
