Diesel generators remain an important source of backup and prime power for industries, commercial buildings, telecom facilities, hospitals and other critical installations. At the same time, controlling emissions from diesel engines has become increasingly important as emission standards have become more demanding.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)One technology that has become closely associated with modern diesel engines is . While the term may sound highly technical, understanding its purpose can help facility managers make better decisions when evaluating new generator sets and emission-control systems.

Why NOx Control Matters in Diesel Engines

Diesel combustion produces several exhaust pollutants, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

NOx is particularly important because it is formed during high-temperature combustion and can contribute to atmospheric pollution. Modern emission-control strategies therefore use a combination of engine-level controls and exhaust after-treatment technologies to reduce different pollutants.

This is why an emission-control system should not be viewed as a single device that solves every pollution problem. Different technologies are designed to address different pollutants.

What Does SCR Do?

Selective Catalytic ReductionSCR stands for . It is an exhaust after-treatment technology designed primarily to reduce NOx emissions.

In a typical SCR system, a urea-based reagent is injected into the hot exhaust stream. The resulting ammonia reacts with NOx over a catalyst, converting the nitrogen oxides primarily into nitrogen and water.

after combustionThe important point is that SCR works . It does not fundamentally change the way fuel is burned inside the engine. Instead, it treats part of the exhaust before it is released into the atmosphere.

How SCR Technology Reduces Diesel Engine EmissionsFor readers who want a more detailed technical explanation of this process, Aceget's guide explains the technology, urea dosing, maintenance considerations and its role in modern gensets.

SCR Is Not the Same as a Particulate Filter

One common misunderstanding is that an SCR system controls every major diesel pollutant.

It does not.

NOxSCR primarily targets , whereas particulate filters are designed to capture particulate matter or soot. Other components, such as diesel oxidation catalysts, may address additional pollutants.

This means a modern after-treatment package can contain multiple technologies working together.

For facility operators, understanding this distinction is useful when reviewing a generator's technical specification. A system should be evaluated according to the pollutants it is designed to control rather than simply being described as an “emission-control system.”

Where SCR Fits in Modern Gensets

Modern diesel generators may use a combination of technologies, including electronic engine management, combustion optimisation and exhaust after-treatment.

CPCB documentation for engines using external devices or reagents such as urea for SCR requires the correct operation of the NOx-control measures.

This highlights an important point: an emission-control technology is not useful merely because it is installed. Its control system, dosing strategy and associated components must operate correctly.

The actual configuration depends on the engine manufacturer, generator capacity, emission standard and certified system design.

SCR and RECD Serve Different Situations

Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs)SCR is often associated with new-generation diesel engines, while are intended for qualifying existing DG sets.

These should not automatically be treated as interchangeable technologies.

An RECD is a retrofit approach designed to control emissions from an already-installed generator without replacing the complete engine and genset. CPCB's RECD test documentation includes evaluation of pollutants such as NOx, HC, CO, PM and smoke, along with other performance requirements including exhaust backpressure.

Therefore, when a facility is evaluating an older DG set, the question is not simply “Should we install SCR?” The more useful question is:

What emission-control solution is technically appropriate for this particular generator?

Why Existing Generator Condition Matters

A retrofit decision should always begin with the condition of the existing generator.

Important factors include:

Engine age
Rated power
Operating hours
Maintenance history
Fuel consumption
Existing exhaust configuration
Baseline emissions
Expected remaining service life

If the generator is mechanically healthy and has significant useful life remaining, a suitable retrofit solution may be worth evaluating.

If the engine is already experiencing major mechanical problems or approaching the end of its practical service life, purchasing a new compliant generator may provide better long-term value.

Don't Ignore Operating Conditions

Emission-control technologies are closely connected to the operating conditions of the engine.

A standby generator that operates for only a few hours each year has a very different duty cycle from a generator running for several hours every day.

Load profile, exhaust temperature, start-stop frequency and annual operating hours can all influence the performance and maintenance requirements of an after-treatment system.

For this reason, facility managers should provide realistic operating information when discussing emission-control solutions with suppliers.

Urea Management Becomes Part of SCR Operation

Another important consideration with SCR-equipped systems is reagent management.

The system needs the appropriate urea-based fluid, storage arrangement, dosing equipment and control electronics. Operators therefore need to consider reagent availability and handling as part of routine generator management.

A system that meets its emission target in a laboratory but cannot be properly maintained at the installation site is not an ideal operational solution.

Before selecting a generator, it is worth asking the supplier about expected reagent consumption, storage requirements, dosing-system maintenance and what happens if the reagent tank becomes empty.

Maintenance Should Be Considered Before Purchase

Emission-control equipment adds another layer to generator maintenance.

For an SCR-equipped generator, maintenance planning may include inspection of the dosing system, sensors, catalyst condition and reagent system.

For a retrofit RECD, maintenance requirements depend on the specific configuration and components used.

The facility should therefore understand the expected maintenance schedule before committing to a technology. This helps prevent unexpected operating costs after installation.

Certification and Documentation Matter

Technical specifications alone should not be the only basis for selecting an emission-control system.

Facility managers should review the relevant type-approval, test and compliance documentation and confirm that the equipment being supplied corresponds to the documented configuration.

CPCB's published material on RECD performance testing, for example, includes the base-engine details, RECD model, test procedure, baseline emissions, fitted emissions and performance results.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)The official website is therefore a useful reference when checking current regulatory information and applicable technical documentation.

Questions to Ask Before Selecting an Emission-Control System

Before making a purchase or retrofit decision, facility managers can ask:

Which pollutants does the proposed system specifically control?
Is the technology designed for a new generator or an existing DG set?
What engine models and power ranges is the system qualified for?
What testing or certification documentation is available?
What maintenance will be required?
Are additional consumables such as urea required?
How will the system perform under the generator's normal load profile?
What happens if a sensor, dosing component or control unit fails?
What are the expected installation and operating costs?
Is local technical support available?

These questions can help organisations compare systems based on actual operating requirements rather than marketing claims.

Making the Right Emission-Control Decision

There is no universal emission-control solution that is ideal for every diesel generator.

New generator sets may incorporate advanced engine management and after-treatment technologies such as SCR as part of their certified emission-control package. Existing generators may require a different approach, including an appropriate RECD where applicable.

The correct choice depends on the generator's age, condition, capacity, operating profile, emission requirements, available infrastructure and long-term financial considerations.

Final Takeaway

SCR has become an important technology for controlling NOx emissions from modern diesel engines, but understanding its role is more important than simply knowing its full form.

SCR primarily addresses NOx, while other emission-control components address particulate matter and other pollutants. For new gensets, these technologies may be integrated into a complete factory-designed emission-control system. For existing DG sets, an appropriately tested retrofit solution can provide a different route to emission control.

Before making a decision, facility managers should evaluate the generator itself, review the applicable compliance requirements, examine certification documents and understand the complete maintenance and operating cost.
