Starting or operating a licensed business in Texas may involve meeting specific bonding requirements. Certain state agencies and local authorities require businesses to obtain a surety bond before issuing a license or permit. Understanding how these bonds work can help business owners prepare the necessary documents and meet applicable requirements.

What Is a License and Permit Bond?

A license and permit bond is a type of surety bond that helps guarantee a business or individual will follow applicable laws, regulations, and licensing requirements. It involves three parties: the business or individual obtaining the bond, the surety company providing the guarantee, and the government agency or other entity requiring the bond. If the bonded party fails to meet covered obligations, a valid claim may be made according to the bond terms.

Who May Need a Surety Bond in Texas?

Different industries may have different bonding requirements. Depending on the type of business and the licensing authority, contractors, vehicle dealers, certain service providers, and other regulated businesses may need a bond before receiving authorization to operate. The required bond amount and conditions depend on the applicable law or regulation.

How to Obtain License and Permit Bonds in Texas

When researching license and permit bond Texas, the first step is to identify the exact bond required by the licensing agency. Business owners should confirm the required bond amount, official form, filing instructions, and effective dates. A licensed insurance or bonding agent can help explain the application process and provide information about available surety options.

What Factors Affect the Cost of a Bond?

The cost of a surety bond is generally called the premium. It can depend on the required bond amount, the applicant's financial background, credit history, business details, and the surety company's underwriting guidelines. The premium is usually different from the full bond amount, so applicants should review the quote and payment terms before proceeding.

Review the Bond Requirements Before Applying

Every licensing authority may have its own rules, forms, and submission deadlines. Getting the correct bond helps avoid delays in the licensing process.
