mg/Nm³g/kWhEmission measurement is an important part of evaluating the performance of diesel generator sets and the emission-control systems installed on them. When industries discuss Retrofit Emission Control Devices (RECDs), technical reports may use different units to express emission results. Two units that can sometimes cause confusion are and .

Although both units are used to describe emissions, they represent measurements in different ways. Understanding the difference can help facility managers, engineers, procurement teams, and environmental professionals interpret RECD test results more effectively.

What Does mg/Nm³ Mean?

mg/Nm³The unit means milligrams of a particular pollutant per normal cubic metre of exhaust gas. It expresses the concentration of a pollutant within a defined volume of exhaust.

For example, a particulate matter result reported in mg/Nm³ tells the reader how much particulate material is present in a specified volume of exhaust gas under defined reference conditions.

This type of measurement can be useful when the focus is on the concentration of pollutants in the exhaust stream. However, the value can be influenced by factors such as exhaust flow, operating conditions, dilution, oxygen reference conditions, and the testing methodology used.

What Does g/kWh Mean?

g/kWhThe unit expresses the mass of pollutant emitted in grams for each kilowatt-hour of useful engine work or power output.

Unlike a concentration-based measurement, g/kWh relates emissions to the amount of work produced by the engine. This makes it useful for comparing emission performance while considering engine output.

For example, two engines may have different exhaust flow rates and pollutant concentrations but produce different amounts of useful power. Expressing emissions in g/kWh provides an emissions-intensity perspective that connects the pollutant mass with engine work.

Why Are Both Units Important?

mg/Nm³ is generally a concentration-based unitg/kWh is an emission factor related to engine outputThe key difference is that , whereas .

Because the two units describe different characteristics, they should not be treated as interchangeable numbers. A direct comparison between an mg/Nm³ result and a g/kWh result without considering the applicable testing conditions and calculation methodology can lead to incorrect conclusions.

When reviewing an RECD performance report, engineers should therefore first identify the measurement unit, test conditions, reference conditions, and calculation method used to produce the reported value.

Understanding RECD Test Results

An RECD is intended to control emissions from an existing diesel generator set. To evaluate its performance, industries may compare measurements taken before and after installation.

The type of measurement used depends on the applicable testing procedure and technical requirements. Parameters can include particulate matter, gaseous pollutants, smoke, opacity, and other relevant emission characteristics.

RECD emissions: mg/Nm³ vs g/kWhFor a deeper understanding of how these two emission units are compared and interpreted specifically in an RECD context, industries can review.

The important point is that the reported numbers should always be considered together with the test methodology rather than viewed in isolation.

The Role of Testing Conditions

Emission measurements can be affected by generator load, engine temperature, fuel characteristics, ambient conditions, exhaust flow, and other operating parameters.

For this reason, before-and-after RECD testing should ideally use comparable operating conditions. If the generator operates at significantly different loads during two tests, the results may not provide a reliable basis for evaluating the change in emission performance.

Proper documentation of the generator model, rated power, operating load, test equipment, sampling conditions, and measurement methodology can therefore make emission reports easier to interpret.

Using Official Technical References

When reviewing emission requirements, it is useful to refer to authoritative technical and regulatory sources rather than relying only on commercial explanations.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)The publishes information and technical documents relating to diesel generator emissions and applicable requirements. Its official resources can help organizations understand the regulatory framework surrounding emissions from generator sets.

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) ARAI official Genset Certification resourcesFor technical certification and testing information, the also provides official resources for genset certification. Its genset certification section includes information on diesel genset engines up to 800 kW mechanical power, applicable CPCB procedures, emission limits, test cycles, and related requirements.

ARAI emission and RECD testing facilitiesARAI also identifies particulate measurement and smoke/opacimeter equipment among the capabilities used in its engine testing facilities, including facilities supporting RECD development and certification.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)Know Your Standard BIS Know Your StandardFor standards-related research, the provides its official facility, where users can search Indian Standards using an IS number or keyword and access related standard information.

These official resources can be useful when technical teams need to verify requirements or understand the broader standards and testing framework.

Avoiding Misinterpretation of Emission Data

One common mistake is to compare emission numbers without checking whether they were measured using the same unit and methodology. An mg/Nm³ value and a g/kWh value cannot simply be placed side by side and treated as equivalent.

The test report should first be reviewed for the pollutant measured, unit of measurement, reference conditions, engine operating point, sampling method, and calculation procedure.

This is particularly important when comparing different generators or evaluating an RECD installed on an existing system.

Why Accurate Reporting Matters

Clear emission reporting helps industries make better technical decisions. A properly documented report allows engineers and facility managers to understand what was measured, how it was measured, and under which operating conditions.

For RECD projects, maintaining records of baseline measurements, post-installation measurements, generator operating conditions, and relevant test documentation can also make future performance reviews easier.

Conclusion

mg/Nm³ and g/kWhUnderstanding the difference between is important when reviewing RECD and diesel generator emission data. mg/Nm³ generally describes pollutant concentration in exhaust, while g/kWh relates pollutant emissions to the amount of engine work or power produced.

Neither unit should automatically be considered better than the other. The appropriate measurement depends on the applicable testing procedure, regulatory requirement, and purpose of the assessment.

By reviewing the measurement unit, testing methodology, operating conditions, and supporting documentation—and by referring to authoritative sources such as CPCB, ARAI, and BIS—industries can interpret RECD emission results more accurately and make better-informed emission-control decisions.
