Diesel generators are essential for maintaining power continuity in many commercial and industrial environments. They can support critical operations during electricity failures and provide standby power where reliability is important. However, because diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions, organizations must also consider how these emissions are managed.

Retrofit Emission Control Devices, commonly referred to as RECD systems, are designed to address this requirement by providing an emission-control solution for existing diesel generator installations.

What Is an RECD System?

An RECD system is a retrofit emission-control arrangement designed to work with an existing DG set.

Rather than replacing the complete generator, retrofit technology focuses on integrating emission-control equipment with the generator's exhaust system.

The exact design and configuration depend on the generator's technical specifications and operating conditions.

How Does the Retrofit Approach Work?

The retrofit concept involves adding emission-control technology to an existing generator.

The installation needs to be compatible with the generator's exhaust configuration and operating characteristics. Physical dimensions, exhaust flow, temperature, available space, and maintenance access are among the factors that may need to be reviewed.

A properly planned installation can help integrate the equipment without unnecessarily disturbing the existing power infrastructure.

Why Are Businesses Interested in RECD Systems?

One major reason is the opportunity to evaluate emission-control improvements without automatically replacing an operational DG set.

For many facilities, generators are already connected to electrical systems, fuel arrangements, control panels, and backup-power infrastructure. Complete replacement can therefore require a larger project.

A retrofit solution can provide another approach worth considering.

Importance of Generator Compatibility

Every generator installation is different.

Even generators with similar ratings may have different engine specifications, exhaust arrangements, operating loads, and site conditions.

Therefore, businesses should provide accurate technical details before selecting an RECD.

Information such as engine make, model, generator capacity, exhaust dimensions, operating hours, and typical load can help suppliers determine the appropriate system configuration.

Installation and Commissioning

Professional installation is an important part of an RECD project.

The installation team needs to consider exhaust routing, equipment positioning, structural support, accessibility, and other site-specific requirements.

After installation, commissioning can help verify that the equipment has been integrated correctly with the generator system.

Businesses should therefore evaluate suppliers based on both product capability and technical support.

Maintenance Considerations

Like the generator itself, an emission-control system requires appropriate inspection and maintenance.

Organizations should understand recommended inspection intervals, maintenance procedures, replacement components, and service requirements before finalizing a system.

Easy access for inspection can also be important, especially in industrial facilities where equipment may operate for long periods.

Integrating RECD Into DG Management

Emission control should form part of a broader DG-set management strategy.

Routine engine servicing, correct loading, fuel management, exhaust inspection, and timely repairs all remain important.

When these practices are combined with an appropriate retrofit system, businesses can take a more comprehensive approach to managing their generator infrastructure.

A Practical Approach for Businesses

Organizations considering RECD technology should avoid selecting a system based solely on marketing claims.

Instead, they should begin with a technical assessment, understand the generator's operating profile, review applicable requirements, compare suitable technologies, and select an experienced supplier.

With the right planning, RECD technology can become an important component of modern diesel-generator emission management while allowing businesses to continue using existing power infrastructure.
