A location pin looks confident. It is a clean little dot, sitting on a specific street, sometimes on a specific building. It is easy to read it as a fact: my daughter is at the library, my son is at the bus stop.

But a pin is an estimate. It is the phone's best guess about where it is, sent over a network, drawn on a map, and shown to you a little after the fact. Most of the time that guess is good enough. Sometimes it is off by a block or more. And even when it is spot on, it tells you less than it seems to.

Understanding phone location accuracy will not make you an expert in satellites. It will make you a calmer, fairer reader of the map, which is what matters when the person on the other end is your child.

Where the dot comes from

An Android phone pulls its location from several sources and blends them together. The main ones are:

GPS and other satellite systems. These work best outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
Wi-Fi networks nearby. The phone compares the networks it can see against a database of known locations.
Mobile network towers. Useful as a rough guide, but much less precise.
Phone sensors. Motion and compass data help smooth out movement between fixes.

The phone picks whatever combination is available at that moment. In a field, satellites do most of the work. Inside a shopping center, Wi-Fi does. In a rural car journey with weak signal, the phone may lean on towers and get a much fuzzier answer.

How accurate is it, really

Under good conditions, phone location is impressive. The US government's GPS.gov site says that GPS-enabled smartphones are typically accurate to within about 4.9 meters, or 16 feet, under open sky. That is roughly the width of a parking lot space or two.

The same source notes that accuracy gets worse near buildings, bridges, and trees. Tall buildings reflect satellite signals, so the phone can think it is across the street. Indoors, satellite signals may barely reach the phone at all.

Android's developer documentation gives a practical picture of what happens then. When Wi-Fi is available, location is usually accurate to between 20 and 50 meters. When indoor positioning is available, it can be as tight as 5 meters. But when Wi-Fi is not available, such as on a rural drive, the accuracy range can stretch to several hundred meters or even several kilometers.

So the same app, on the same phone, can be extremely precise at one moment and very rough the next. Nothing is broken. The conditions changed.

The shaded circle matters more than the dot

Many maps show a pale circle around the location dot. That circle is the app's way of saying "the phone is probably somewhere in here." A small circle means a confident fix. A large one means the phone is less sure.

This is the single most useful thing to look at. If the circle covers half a neighborhood, the dot's exact position inside it means very little. Your child could be at the school, the store next door, or the bus stop around the corner, and the map cannot tell you which.

Google's own help pages for location sharing make a related point. In busy areas, the location shown may appear as a nearby business or point of interest, and it can occasionally be wrong. A dot that seems to sit inside a particular café might just be the nearest labeled place to a rough estimate.

Timing is part of accuracy

A pin is also a snapshot in time. Phones do not report their location every second, because that would drain the battery fast. Many apps update every few minutes, or when the phone moves a meaningful distance. Battery-saving modes slow this down further.

That means the dot you see might be from five, ten, or twenty minutes ago. Many apps show a timestamp near the location, like "updated 12 minutes ago." Always check it. A child who appears to be "still at school" may have left a while back, and the update simply has not come through yet.

Google's Family Link help pages also note that a child's location will not appear if their device is powered off, is not connected to the internet, or has not been used recently, and that it may take some time to find the device. A missing or stale location is often just a sleeping phone.

What a pin can tell you

Used well, a location pin answers a small set of questions quite reliably:

Roughly where a phone is right now, or was at its last update
Whether a phone is moving or staying put over time
Whether a phone is in the general area of an expected place
Where to start looking if a phone has been lost or left behind

how Android location tracking worksThose are genuinely useful. They can save you a frantic phone call or help you find a phone dropped on a bus. If you want to understand the setup side of all this, there is a useful explainer on that covers GPS, live updates, and place alerts.

What a pin cannot tell you

This is where people get into trouble. A location pin cannot tell you:

Who is holding the phone. Phones get lent, left, swapped, and forgotten. The pin follows the device, not the person.
Whether someone is safe. A dot sitting at home does not mean everything is fine, and a dot somewhere unexpected does not mean something is wrong.
Whether someone attended something. A phone near school grounds does not confirm a student was in class.
What someone is doing or intending. A stop at an unfamiliar address could be a friend's house, a bathroom break, or a phone that lost signal.
The exact building or room. With a 50-meter margin, the "location" may cover several houses.

Treating a pin as proof of any of these things leads to unfair accusations and unnecessary panic. It also teaches children that the map, not their word, is what counts. That is a bad lesson for trust.

Common situations that fool parents

A few patterns show up again and again in family life.

The jump. The dot suddenly leaps a few hundred meters, then comes back. This usually happens when the phone switches between satellite and Wi-Fi sources. It does not mean your child ran across town and back.

The frozen dot. The location has not changed in an hour. Often the phone is in a bag on silent, in battery saver mode, or in a building with poor signal.

The wrong side of the street. A child seems to be in a store they said they were not visiting. In a dense area, a small error can put the dot inside the neighboring building.

The late arrival. The child is home, but the map still shows them on the road. The last update simply came before they walked in.

In every one of these cases, the right move is the same: ask, calmly, rather than accuse.

How to get better readings

There are a few easy steps that improve phone location accuracy on Android:

Keep Location turned on, and enable Google Location Accuracy in settings
Leave Wi-Fi switched on, even if not connected, since it helps the phone place itself
Avoid aggressive battery-saving settings for the location app you rely on
Keep the phone's software and the location app updated
Restart the phone if the location seems stuck for a long time

Google's Family Link guidance also suggests turning on location accuracy, making sure Wi-Fi and internet are on, and calibrating the compass if the location seems wrong.

None of these will make a pin perfect. They will make it more consistent.

Explaining this to your child

It is worth having a short chat with your child about how the map works, especially if they are old enough to have their own phone. Show them the shaded circle. Show them the timestamp. Let them see for themselves how the dot can drift when they stand inside a building.

This does two things. First, it lowers the chance of a misunderstanding later, because they know the map can be wrong and so can you. Second, it teaches them something useful about their own privacy. A teen who understands how precise location can be under open sky is better placed to decide who they share it with, and for how long.

You can also agree on a simple rule together: if the map ever shows something confusing, the first step is a message, not a lecture. Children who know they will be asked rather than accused are far more likely to reply honestly and quickly.

Reading the map like a fair witness

A helpful mindset is to read the map the way a fair witness would. Note what it shows. Note how confident it is. Note how old the information is. Then stop.

If something looks off, the next step is a conversation, not a conclusion. "I saw your phone was near the station for a while; everything okay?" lands very differently from "Why were you at the station?" The first invites an explanation. The second assumes guilt based on an estimate.

Phone location is a helpful tool for families. It shines when you need a rough idea of where someone is, or when a phone goes missing. It falls short when it is asked to replace trust, presence, or a simple phone call. Know its limits, and it becomes far more useful, not less.
