Take a single page of genuine first-draft writing, roughly 300 to 400 words, and count every backspace, every deleted word, every retyped phrase that happened while it was being produced. The number is almost always higher than people expect when asked to guess in advance. Most writers, when they picture their own drafting process, remember the finished sentences and forget the small, constant stream of corrections that got them there. This piece looks at what that correction rate actually tends to be, why it varies across different kinds of writing, and why a document with too few corrections can read as unusual in its own specific way.

This piece covers the rough range of corrections a typical page of drafting produces, what kinds of corrections make up that count, and how this rate shifts depending on the difficulty and formality of what is being written.

Why corrections happen constantly during real drafting

Writing is a process of continuously deciding what to say next, and that decision-making does not always land correctly on the first attempt. A writer starts a sentence expecting it to go one direction, realizes partway through that a different phrasing would work better, and corrects it mid-sentence. A writer types a word, immediately recognizes it as the wrong choice, and swaps it. A writer makes a simple mechanical error, a transposed letter, a doubled character, and fixes it in the same motion without any real interruption to their train of thought.

None of this reflects poor writing skill. If anything, the opposite is often true, since more careful writers frequently make more small corrections as they continuously evaluate whether each sentence is actually saying what they intend, rather than accepting the first version that comes out.

The rough numbers for a typical page

What research and typing studies suggest

Typing research consistently finds that even fast, accurate typists produce errors at a measurable rate and correct the large majority of them within a few keystrokes, rather than typing perfectly from start to finish. For a full page of first-draft prose, somewhere in the range of a dozen to several dozen small corrections, single-character fixes, short word swaps, brief backtracks of a few words, is a reasonable and unremarkable range, though it varies considerably by writer and by how much the writer is thinking through the content in real time versus transcribing something already fully formed in their head.

Beyond these small corrections, most real drafting also includes a smaller number of larger revisions per page: a sentence that gets deleted entirely and rewritten from scratch, a clause that gets moved to a different part of the sentence, a paragraph opener that gets scrapped after a few words because the writer realizes the whole approach is not working. These larger corrections happen less frequently than small ones but carry more weight in making a document's revision history look genuinely worked through rather than mechanically clean.

Why the rate shifts with difficulty and formality

Correction rate is not constant across all writing. Technical or highly precise writing, where word choice carries more weight and getting a specific claim exactly right matters more, tends to produce a higher correction rate than casual or narrative writing, where the writer is often working from a clearer sense of what they want to say and needs fewer attempts to land on the right phrasing.

Similarly, sections of a document that cover unfamiliar or difficult material for the writer tend to show a higher correction rate than sections covering material the writer knows well and can express fluently. A document with a uniform correction rate across every paragraph, regardless of how conceptually difficult each section is, reads as somewhat unusual for the same reason a uniform sentence rhythm does: real difficulty in the underlying content usually shows up somewhere in how smoothly the writing came out.

The type of correction also shifts with content type in a way worth noting separately from the raw rate. Technical writing tends to produce more word-level swaps, one precise term replacing a slightly less precise one, while narrative or persuasive writing tends to produce more sentence-level restructuring, a whole clause reordered for better flow or emphasis. Both are genuine correction patterns, but they leave a different texture in the revision history, and matching the type of correction to the type of content adds a layer of realism beyond simply getting the overall frequency right.

Human Auto Typer A with a configurable error and correction rate exists specifically because a session with zero corrections produces a document that lacks this basic texture of real drafting. Setting a correction rate that lands within the range a real page of writing would show, and adjusting it slightly for more technical or difficult content, keeps a document's revision history consistent with what genuine drafting actually looks like.

The Correction Curve

A full page of genuine first-draft writing carries a real, measurable stream of small and occasionally larger corrections, not a clean, error-free path from first word to last. That correction rate varies with the difficulty and formality of the content, higher for technical or unfamiliar material, lower for straightforward or familiar writing, and a document that reflects this variation reads as more genuinely drafted than one with either no corrections at all or a perfectly uniform rate applied regardless of what the content actually demands.
