An RECD for DG Set consists of different components that work together to control emissions from diesel generator exhaust. Knowing the main components of an RECD system can help DG set operators understand how the equipment works and why proper installation and maintenance are important. The exact design can vary depending on the manufacturer and emission-control technology.

What Is the Purpose of an RECD?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is designed to be fitted to an existing diesel generator set to control harmful emissions from its exhaust.

The system is generally connected to the DG set's exhaust arrangement and treats the exhaust gases before they are discharged.

What Are the Main Components?

The components can differ from one system to another. However, a typical RECD installation may include the following:

1. Emission-Control Unit

The main emission-control unit is the heart of the system. It contains the technology responsible for reducing or capturing pollutants from the exhaust.

Its construction and internal design depend on the type of RECD being used.

2. Filter or Filtration Element

Some RECD systems use filtration technology to capture particulate matter from exhaust gases.

The filter needs to be monitored and maintained because accumulated particulate matter can affect system performance if the device is not designed or operated correctly.

3. Exhaust Housing

The housing protects and contains the internal emission-control components. It also provides the connection between the exhaust piping and the emission-control device.

The housing should be suitable for the temperature and flow conditions of the DG set.

4. Inlet and Outlet Connections

The inlet connects the RECD to the DG set exhaust, while the outlet allows treated exhaust to continue toward the final exhaust outlet.

Correct sizing and installation of these connections are important.

5. Monitoring Components

Depending on the system, monitoring instruments or sensors may be used to observe parameters such as temperature or pressure.

Monitoring helps operators identify operating conditions that may require attention.

6. Pressure Monitoring Arrangement

Exhaust back pressure is an important parameter in a DG set exhaust system. Some installations include arrangements for monitoring pressure across the emission-control device.

This can help identify excessive resistance or blockage.

7. Mounting and Support Structure

A proper mounting arrangement is required to safely support the RECD. The support structure should account for the weight, temperature, vibration, and installation position of the system.

Why Are These Components Important?

Each component has a specific role. The emission-control unit handles the pollutants, the housing provides protection, the connections manage exhaust flow, and monitoring arrangements help operators check system performance.

If one component is incorrectly selected or installed, it can affect the overall operation of the system.

What Should You Check Before Installation?

Before installing an RECD, check:

DG set capacity
Engine specifications
Exhaust pipe diameter
Exhaust temperature
Exhaust flow
Back-pressure limits
Available installation space
Maintenance access
Manufacturer specifications

Compatibility should always be confirmed before installation.

How Should RECD Components Be Maintained?

Maintenance requirements depend on the specific technology. Operators should follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Routine checks can include:

Inspecting exhaust connections
Checking for leakage
Monitoring pressure
Checking temperature where applicable
Inspecting filtration components
Checking mounting supports
Looking for unusual noise or vibration

Conclusion

The main components of an RECD system work together to control emissions from a diesel generator set. Although the exact design varies between technologies, components such as the emission-control unit, filter, housing, exhaust connections, monitoring arrangements, and support structure are important for reliable operation. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance are essential for achieving the intended performance.

FAQs

1. What is the main component of an RECD?

The main emission-control unit is the central component because it performs the primary emission-control function.

2. Does every RECD have the same components?

No. Components vary according to the technology, manufacturer, DG set, and system design.

3. Why is back-pressure monitoring important?

Excessive exhaust back pressure can affect engine operation, so monitoring can help identify potential problems.

4. Can RECD components be replaced?

Some components may require cleaning, servicing, or replacement depending on the system design and manufacturer's recommendations.

5. Who should install an RECD?

It is advisable to use qualified professionals who understand DG set exhaust systems and the specific RECD technology.
