Two tables can look almost identical in photographs and still differ in price by a wide margin. One may cost far more than the other, and the reason is rarely visible at a glance. It hides in the timber, the drying, the joinery, the finish and the workshop behind the table.

Understanding what drives the price helps you set a realistic budget, compare quotes fairly and avoid paying for things that do not matter. This guide breaks down every major cost factor and shows where your money works hardest when buying a solid wood dining table.

Factor 1: The Timber Species

Wood is usually the biggest single cost. Different species sit in different price bands:

Mango and similar lighter woods are generally the most budget-friendly.
Acacia sits in the middle, offering good hardness at a fair price.
Sheesham is a popular mid-to-premium choice known for density and attractive grain.
Teak is typically at the higher end because of its stability, natural oils and long life.
Imported oak and walnut are usually the most expensive, due to sourcing and transport.

The right pick is not always the cheapest or the dearest. It is the one that matches your use, climate and look.

Factor 2: Table Size and Timber Volume

A larger table simply needs more wood. A ten-seater uses far more timber than a four-seater, and thicker tops use more again. Size also affects labour, since longer spans need stronger support and more careful handling and transport.

If you are trying to control cost, resist the urge to oversize. Match the table to your real seating needs rather than occasional peak events, or consider an extendable design.

Factor 3: Quality and Grade of the Planks

Not all timber of the same species is equal. Higher-grade boards have:

Fewer knots and defects
More consistent colour and grain
Longer, wider planks that need fewer joins

Selecting and matching boards takes time and produces more offcuts, which raises cost. A top made from carefully matched wide planks will look noticeably better, and cost more, than one pieced together from small offcuts.

Factor 4: Seasoning and Drying

Properly dried timber is expensive to produce because it takes time, space and energy. Cheaper tables often cut corners here, and the result shows up months later as cracks, warping or loose joints. When comparing offers, ask how the wood was seasoned. A responsible solid wood dining table manufacturer will answer clearly and confidently.

Factor 5: Joinery and Construction

Strong joinery takes skill and time. Mortise-and-tenon joints, dowelled edges and properly designed supports cost more than quick screwed assemblies, but they keep the table solid for decades.

When you look under a table, clean, tight joints and sturdy supports are good signs. Wobbly legs, visible gaps and heavy reliance on metal brackets suggest corners were cut.

Factor 6: Design Complexity

Simple, clean shapes cost less to produce than elaborate ones. Carvings, turned legs, inlays, curved aprons and sculpted edges all add labour hours.

A modern solid wood dining table with straight lines and minimal detailing is often more affordable than a heavily ornamented traditional design, while still looking elegant. A round solid wood dining table may cost slightly more than a rectangular one of similar size because curved cutting and joining take extra care and generate more waste.

Factor 7: Finish and Surface Treatment

Finishing can range from a simple oil coat to multiple layers of sanded and polished lacquer. Better finishes need more labour and better materials, but they protect the wood, resist spills and heat, and reduce long-term maintenance.

A thin, rushed finish may look fine in the showroom and fail within a year. Ask how many coats are applied and what kind of finish it is.

Factor 8: Customisation

Made-to-order furniture usually costs more than ready-made stock because it involves individual planning, cutting and construction. But the extra investment buys you exactly what fits your room.

With a custom solid wood table, you pay for dimensions, timber, shape and finish chosen specifically for you. Extras such as extension leaves, drawers, special edges or unusual bases add to the cost. Many families find that customized solid wood dining tables are worth it because they avoid compromises on size and style.

Factor 9: Chairs and Matching Pieces

Remember to budget for seating. Quality chairs can cost as much as the table itself, especially for larger sets. Buying a coordinated solid wood kitchen table and chairs set can be efficient, as proportions and finishes are matched and bundled pricing is often possible.

Factor 10: Who You Buy From

Pricing also depends on the seller's model:

Direct from the workshop: usually the best value, as there are fewer middlemen.
Through retailers or showrooms: convenient, but margins add to the price.
Through an online marketplace: can be competitive, but check seller credibility carefully.

A trusted solid wood dining tables supplier who works close to the source can often offer clearer quotes and better after-sales help. For buyers in the capital region, a solid wood dining tables manufacturer in Delhi also reduces transport costs and makes visiting, measuring and servicing easier.

Factor 11: Delivery, Installation and Warranty

Do not forget the extras. Delivery, assembly and stairs or lift access can change the final cost. Warranty terms matter too: coverage for cracks, warping and finish defects shows how confident a seller is in the product.

How to Compare Quotes Fairly

When you have two or three offers, compare them on the same basis:

Timber species and whether the entire table is solid wood
Dimensions and top thickness
Seasoning method
Joinery type
Finish type and number of coats
Warranty and after-sales terms
Delivery and installation costs
Timeline

Ask for written specifications. A quote that is much lower than others often means something on this list has been reduced.

Think in Cost Per Year, Not Price Today

A cheap table that must be replaced every five to eight years can cost more in the long run than a well-built one that lasts decades. Solid timber can also be sanded and refinished, which extends its life even further.

A simple way to think about it: divide the price by the number of years you expect to use the table. A higher upfront cost spread over thirty years often beats a lower cost spread over six. This long-term view is why many buyers search for the best solid wood dining table they can reasonably afford rather than the cheapest one available.

Smart Ways to Save Without Losing Quality

Choose a simpler design. Clean lines cost less than elaborate carving.
Pick a more affordable timber such as mango or acacia, with a strong finish.
Right-size the table. Avoid paying for seats you rarely use.
Buy the table and chairs together for coordinated pricing.
Order direct from the maker to reduce middleman costs.
Plan ahead. Rushed orders can cost more.

Where Not to Cut Corners

Some savings are false economies. Avoid compromising on:

Seasoning of the timber
Joinery quality
Finish durability
Whether the table is truly solid wood

These four determine whether your table lasts a lifetime or disappoints within a few years.

Final Thoughts

The price of a solid wood dining table is the sum of many small decisions, from timber and size to joinery, finish, design and seller. Once you understand each factor, you can spend where it counts and save where it does not, and you will recognise a fair quote when you see one.
