Choosing the right RECD for DG Set requires more than simply selecting an emission-control device based on its size or price. The RECD must be compatible with the DG set, engine, exhaust flow, operating temperature, and applicable requirements. A proper selection process can help ensure effective emission control and reliable generator operation.

Why Is RECD Selection Important?

An RECD becomes part of the DG set's exhaust system. Therefore, an unsuitable device can create excessive exhaust resistance, maintenance issues, or poor emission-control performance.

The correct system should match the technical characteristics of the generator and its operating conditions.

What Factors Should You Consider?

1. DG Set Capacity

The capacity of the DG set is one of the first details to consider.

The emission-control device should be suitable for the generator's rated capacity and exhaust characteristics.

2. Engine Make and Model

Different engines have different exhaust characteristics.

Always provide the engine make, model, and technical specifications to the RECD manufacturer or supplier before selecting a system.

3. Exhaust Flow

The RECD should be capable of handling the exhaust flow produced by the DG set.

An incorrectly sized device may not provide the intended performance.

4. Exhaust Temperature

Some emission-control technologies depend on specific exhaust-temperature conditions.

Therefore, the expected operating temperature should be checked against the manufacturer's specifications.

5. Back-Pressure Limit

Back pressure is a critical selection factor.

The selected RECD should operate within the permissible exhaust back-pressure limit specified for the engine.

6. Operating Load

A DG set may operate at different loads depending on the application.

The RECD should be suitable for the generator's expected operating range.

7. Emission-Control Requirement

Determine which pollutants need to be controlled and what applicable requirements must be met.

Do not select a device solely on the basis of a generic emission-reduction claim.

8. Maintenance Requirements

Consider how often the system needs inspection, cleaning, servicing, or component replacement.

A system that is difficult to maintain may create operational challenges.

9. Installation Space

The available space around the DG set and exhaust line should be checked before selection.

The RECD also needs suitable access for inspection and maintenance.

10. Manufacturer Documentation

Before purchasing, ask for relevant technical documentation, installation instructions, operating requirements, and applicable performance or test information.

Should Price Be the Only Selection Factor?

No. Initial purchase cost is only one part of the decision.

The overall evaluation should also consider:

Technical compatibility
Installation cost
Maintenance requirements
Expected service life
Monitoring requirements
Performance documentation
Applicable compliance requirements

How Can You Avoid Selection Mistakes?

A simple checklist can help:

Step 1: Record DG set and engine details.

Step 2: Check exhaust flow and temperature.

Step 3: Confirm permissible back pressure.

Step 4: Identify applicable emission requirements.

Step 5: Compare compatible RECD technologies.

Step 6: Review technical documentation.

Step 7: Plan installation and maintenance.

Conclusion

Choosing an RECD requires careful consideration of DG capacity, engine specifications, exhaust flow, temperature, back pressure, operating load, emission requirements, maintenance, and installation conditions. Instead of selecting a system only on price or generic claims, DG set owners should compare technical compatibility and documented performance to identify a suitable solution.

FAQs

1. What is the most important factor when selecting an RECD?

Compatibility with the DG set and engine is one of the most important factors.

2. Why should exhaust flow be checked?

The RECD needs to handle the exhaust flow generated by the engine properly.

3. Is back pressure important when choosing an RECD?

Yes. The system should remain within the engine manufacturer's permissible back-pressure limits.

4. Should maintenance requirements be considered?

Yes. Maintenance requirements can affect long-term operation and cost.

5. Should I compare RECD manufacturers?

Yes. Compare technical specifications, documented performance, compatibility, installation requirements, and after-sales support rather than price alone.

What Factors Should You Consider Before Choosing an RECD for a DG Set?

An RECD becomes part of the DG set's exhaust system. Therefore, an unsuitable device can create excessive exhaust resistance.
