Diesel generator sets are widely used in commercial buildings, industries, hospitals, offices, construction sites, and other places where reliable power is required. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust gases containing pollutants. Managing these emissions is an important part of responsible DG-set operation.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)A is designed to provide additional emission control for suitable existing diesel generators. It is generally integrated into the exhaust system and helps control specific pollutants before the exhaust is released into the atmosphere.

What Does RECD Mean?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . The word "retrofit" means that the emission-control equipment can be added to an existing DG set rather than being part of a completely new generator.

The system is designed according to the technical characteristics of the generator and the type of emissions that need to be controlled.

An RECD is not a single universal product. Different technologies can be used for different applications, so selecting the right system requires consideration of the generator's specifications and operating conditions.

How Does RECD for DG Set Work?

An RECD is normally installed within the exhaust arrangement of the diesel generator.

When the engine operates, combustion produces exhaust gases. These gases travel through the exhaust piping and pass through the retrofit emission-control system. The RECD then uses its particular technology to treat targeted pollutants before the exhaust leaves the system.

The basic working process is:

The diesel engine burns fuel to generate power.
Exhaust gases are produced during combustion.
Exhaust gases travel through the exhaust system.
The gases pass through the RECD.
The emission-control technology treats targeted pollutants.
The treated exhaust continues through the outlet.

The exact process depends on the type and design of the emission-control technology.

What Pollutants Can RECD Control?

An RECD is designed to control specific pollutants rather than automatically removing every pollutant from diesel exhaust.

For example, some technologies are designed primarily for particulate matter, while other systems may target additional pollutants. The actual performance depends on the technology, engine condition, operating load, exhaust temperature, and other conditions.

Therefore, users should always review the technical specifications of the selected system before installation.

Why Is RECD Important for DG Sets?

RECD can be an important option for facilities operating existing diesel generators that require additional emission-control measures.

Helps Manage Targeted Emissions

The main purpose of an RECD is to help control targeted pollutants in the exhaust generated by a diesel engine.

Can Be Used With Existing Equipment

A suitable retrofit system can be installed on an existing DG set when technical compatibility and applicable requirements are satisfied.

Supports Environmental Management

Controlling targeted exhaust pollutants can help facilities improve their overall approach to generator emission management.

Supports Compliance Planning

CPCB guidelines for RECDThe and other applicable regulatory provisions can be considered when evaluating an emission-control system.

Requirements may vary according to factors such as DG-set capacity, category, installation, and applicable regulations. Therefore, the latest requirements should be checked before purchasing or installing a system.

How to Select an RECD Device for Diesel Generator?

RECD device for diesel generatorChoosing the correct requires more than checking the generator's kVA rating.

Important factors include:

1. DG Set Capacity

The system should be appropriate for the generator's rated capacity and exhaust requirements.

2. Engine Make and Model

Engine specifications influence exhaust characteristics and should be considered during system selection.

3. Exhaust Gas Flow

The RECD needs to handle the expected exhaust flow produced by the generator.

4. Exhaust Temperature

Some emission-control technologies require suitable exhaust temperature conditions for effective operation.

5. Back Pressure

The retrofit system should operate within suitable exhaust back-pressure limits for the engine.

6. Operating Conditions

Generator load, operating hours, duty cycle, and usage pattern can affect emission-control performance.

RECD Installation

Correct installation is essential for reliable operation. Before installation, the existing DG-set exhaust system should be inspected and the technical compatibility of the selected RECD should be confirmed.

Important installation considerations include:

Existing exhaust-pipe arrangement
Exhaust gas flow
Exhaust temperature
Back-pressure limits
Available installation space
DG-set specifications
Manufacturer's installation instructions
Inspection and maintenance access

A professional technical assessment can help ensure that the retrofit system is properly matched to the generator.

Does RECD Replace Generator Maintenance?

No. RECD is an emission-control system and does not replace regular DG-set maintenance.

The generator should continue to receive routine servicing. Important areas include the engine, fuel system, filters, lubrication system, cooling system, battery, and exhaust system.

Engine faults should also be corrected because poor engine operation can increase abnormal emissions and affect the performance of the emission-control system.

The RECD itself should be inspected and maintained according to the manufacturer's technical instructions.

RECD and CPCB Compliance

Before selecting an RECD, users should understand the regulatory requirements applicable to their particular DG set.

CPCB guidelines for RECDThe can be an important part of compliance planning, along with other applicable rules, technical requirements, and site-specific conditions.

Users should verify current provisions and review relevant technical documentation, certifications, or approvals where applicable. Installation and maintenance records should also be maintained appropriately.

Benefits of Using RECD

A properly selected and installed RECD can offer several practical benefits:

Helps control targeted diesel exhaust pollutants.
Provides an emission-control option for suitable existing DG sets.
Supports better environmental management.
Can assist with applicable emission-control requirements.
Allows emission-control technology to be added without automatically replacing the complete generator.
Can be integrated into an existing exhaust system when technically feasible.

Actual performance depends on the selected technology, generator condition, installation, operating conditions, and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Retrofit Emission Control Device?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an emission-control system designed to be added to a suitable existing diesel generator to help control specific exhaust pollutants.

Is RECD required for every diesel generator?

Requirements can vary depending on the DG set, capacity, installation, location, and applicable regulations. Users should check the current requirements relevant to their specific generator.

Can RECD be installed on an existing generator?

Yes, a retrofit system can be considered for an existing DG set when the selected equipment is technically compatible and meets applicable requirements.

Does RECD remove all emissions?

No. An RECD is designed to control specific pollutants according to its technology. It does not mean that all emissions from a diesel generator are eliminated.

What should I check before buying an RECD?

Check the DG-set capacity, engine make and model, exhaust flow, exhaust temperature, back pressure, operating conditions, technical documentation, maintenance requirements, and applicable regulatory provisions.

Does RECD replace regular DG-set servicing?

No. Regular generator maintenance remains necessary. RECD should be considered an additional emission-control measure.
