Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) for DG SetDiesel generator sets are widely used in commercial buildings, industries, hospitals, offices, construction projects, and other facilities where reliable electricity is required. While DG sets provide essential backup or prime power, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions that need to be managed according to applicable environmental requirements. A is designed to help control emissions from suitable existing diesel generator engines.

Unlike replacing an entire generator, a retrofit approach adds emission-control equipment to an existing DG set. This can be useful for organizations that want to address emissions from existing equipment while continuing to use their generator, provided the retrofit is technically suitable and applicable regulatory requirements are satisfied.

What Does RECD Mean?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . The word “retrofit” means that the emission-control equipment is added to an existing engine or generator rather than being incorporated only into a newly manufactured generator.

The device is installed as part of the exhaust system and is intended to control specific exhaust pollutants. The exact technology and performance depend on the RECD design, the engine, operating conditions, and the applicable certification or testing requirements.

CPCB's published RECD procedure describes RECDs in relation to already-certified DG engine families and specifies that their type-approval range is linked to the engine family for which the device has been tested and certified.

Why Are RECD Systems Used on DG Sets?

Diesel engines release pollutants during combustion. The quantity and composition of exhaust emissions can depend on engine design, fuel, operating load, maintenance condition, combustion efficiency, and other operating factors.

An RECD provides an additional emission-control mechanism in the exhaust path. For organizations operating existing DG sets, this may provide an alternative to immediately replacing an otherwise usable generator, where retrofitment is permitted and technically appropriate.

However, RECD should not be treated as a replacement for proper engine maintenance. A generator with injector problems, poor combustion, dirty filters, excessive oil consumption, or other engine faults should be inspected and repaired separately.

How Does an RECD Work?

The basic concept is straightforward. Exhaust gases generated by the diesel engine travel through the exhaust system. The RECD is installed in that exhaust pathway and uses its emission-control technology to treat the exhaust before it is discharged.

The specific mechanism depends on the device. Different systems may be designed around different emission-control technologies and may target different pollutants.

Because performance is connected to engine and exhaust characteristics, an RECD should not simply be selected based on the generator's kVA rating. Engine model, power range, exhaust characteristics, operating conditions, and certification applicability also matter.

Is Every RECD Suitable for Every DG Set?

No. This is one of the most important points for DG-set owners.

CPCB's RECD procedure establishes family and type-approval concepts that connect a retrofit device with particular engine families and technical characteristics.

Therefore, buyers should provide complete information about their generator before purchasing an RECD.

Useful information includes:

DG-set capacity
Engine manufacturer
Engine model
Engine family, where available
Manufacturing details
Fuel type
Exhaust configuration
Typical operating load
Existing emission-control equipment

A technically suitable RECD should be identified based on this information.

What Are the Benefits of Using RECD?

A suitable RECD can provide several practical benefits.

First, it can allow emission-control equipment to be added to an existing generator. Second, it can help organizations address applicable emission-control requirements without automatically replacing the entire DG set. Third, a properly selected retrofit device can become part of a broader environmental-management strategy.

However, actual emission-control performance depends on the specific device, engine, operating conditions, installation, and maintenance.

What Is the Connection Between RECD and CPCB?

CPCB plays an important role in India's pollution-control framework. For DG sets, applicable requirements can depend on factors such as engine characteristics, capacity, manufacturing period, and the relevant regulatory provisions.

CPCB also publishes information concerning certified RECD manufacturers and the engine-power ranges to which listed devices apply. For example, its published list identifies certified RECD manufacturers and provides applicability ranges for different in-use DG engine categories.

This means buyers should check the current applicable CPCB information rather than relying only on a supplier's marketing statement.

What Should Be Checked Before RECD Installation?

A technical assessment should be completed before installation.

The assessment should consider the DG engine, exhaust system, operating load, exhaust temperature, available installation space, back-pressure considerations, and device compatibility.

The existing engine should also be inspected. If the generator is producing unusually high smoke because of an engine fault, that fault should be corrected.

Why Is Maintenance Important?

An RECD does not eliminate the need for DG-set maintenance.

Regular generator maintenance can include:

Engine oil inspection
Air-filter inspection
Fuel-filter servicing
Injector inspection
Cooling-system checks
Battery maintenance
Exhaust-system inspection
General engine performance checks

The RECD itself should also be maintained according to the manufacturer's technical instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an RECD be installed on an existing DG set?

Yes, retrofit devices are intended for suitable existing DG engines, subject to technical applicability and relevant requirements.

Is RECD the same as replacing a DG set?

No. RECD is a retrofit emission-control approach, whereas replacing a generator involves installing a different generator.

Can one RECD be installed on every DG model?

No. Compatibility and certification applicability must be checked.

Does RECD remove the need for engine servicing?

No. Regular engine maintenance remains essential.

Conclusion

A Retrofit Emission Control Device can be an important emission-control option for suitable existing diesel generator sets. The correct approach involves more than purchasing a device and attaching it to the exhaust. DG-set specifications, engine compatibility, applicable CPCB requirements, installation conditions, maintenance, and documentation should all be considered.

For organizations evaluating an RECD, the first step should be a technical assessment of the existing generator and identification of the applicable regulatory requirements
