Diesel generators are important for backup power, but their combustion process produces exhaust emissions. As environmental requirements become increasingly important, businesses and facility operators need suitable methods for managing emissions from existing generator sets.

DG set RECD deviceA Retrofit Emission Control Device, commonly called RECD, is one approach used for compatible diesel generator applications. A is designed to work with an existing engine rather than requiring the complete replacement of the generator.

What Does RECD Mean?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control device designed to be fitted to an already certified DG engine or engine family.

CPCB's RECD procedure states that these devices are developed, optimized, and certified for already certified DG engine families. It also provides requirements for RECD type approval and family classification.

How Does an RECD Work?

The basic concept is straightforward.

A diesel engine burns fuel and produces exhaust gases. These gases travel through the engine's exhaust system before being released into the atmosphere.

A retrofit emission-control device is installed within the exhaust pathway. Depending on the approved technology, the device can help control specified pollutants in the exhaust.

The exact mechanism varies according to the RECD technology and approved configuration. Therefore, users should rely on the technical documentation supplied for the particular device instead of assuming that every RECD operates identically.

Why Is Engine Compatibility Important?

Engine compatibility is one of the most important considerations when selecting a retrofit device.

CPCB's procedure establishes RECD families and connects the applicable type-approval range with the engine family for which the RECD has been evaluated.

Before purchasing a device, users should collect:

Generator make
Engine make
Engine model
Rated power
Engine family information
Existing exhaust configuration
Operating conditions
Relevant technical documentation

RECD Installation Process

The installation process should follow the manufacturer's instructions.

According to CPCB's published installation guidance, manufacturers/importers/retrofitters are expected to provide instructions covering the intended DG-set application, approved range, required skills, fitting procedure, and safety considerations.

RECD installation service for DG setA typical may involve:

Collecting DG-set and engine details
Checking compatibility
Reviewing the applicable device documentation
Inspecting the exhaust system
Installing the device according to instructions
Checking the installation
Operating the generator and observing performance
Providing maintenance guidance

The actual steps can vary according to the equipment and manufacturer's instructions.

What Are the Advantages of RECD?

For a compatible existing generator, a retrofit system may provide a practical way to introduce additional emission-control equipment without automatically replacing the complete DG set.

Potential advantages include:

Retrofit application
Compatibility with selected existing engines
Emission-control support
Structured installation process
Maintenance guidance
Technical documentation

However, benefits and emission performance should always be evaluated for the particular RECD and engine combination.

Role of an RECD Manufacturer

RECD manufacturer in IndiaAn experienced can support customers with technical selection, documentation, installation guidance, and maintenance information.

Customers should ask for relevant technical documents before purchasing. These may include information about:

Approved engine family
Applicable power range
Installation requirements
Operating instructions
Maintenance requirements
Safety considerations

CPCB guidance specifically requires installation and operation/maintenance information to be supplied for appropriate use.

Maintenance of RECD

After installation, maintenance should follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Regular checks can help identify issues early. Operators should monitor generator performance and investigate abnormal exhaust smoke, unusual engine behavior, or changes in operating conditions.

Maintenance should not focus only on the retrofit device. The engine itself should also be maintained according to the engine manufacturer's recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DG set RECD device?

It is a retrofit emission-control device intended for application on compatible existing DG engines.

Is RECD suitable for every generator?

No. RECD application is linked to approved engine families and technical characteristics.

Can RECD improve emission control?

A suitable, approved retrofit system is designed to control specified emissions. Actual performance depends on the device, engine, installation, operation, and maintenance.

Is professional installation required?

The installation should follow the manufacturer's instructions and be performed by appropriately skilled personnel.

Conclusion

RECD for DG setUnderstanding how RECD works helps DG-set owners make better technical decisions. A is not simply an exhaust accessory; it is an engineered retrofit system that needs to be matched with the correct engine family and application.
