Diesel generator sets, commonly known as DG sets, are widely used as backup power sources in offices, factories, hospitals, residential buildings, commercial complexes, data centres, and other facilities. While DG sets provide reliable electricity during power interruptions, diesel combustion also produces exhaust emissions. This is why emission-control solutions have become an important part of modern DG-set management.

RECD for DG SetOne such solution is a . RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system designed to be installed on suitable existing diesel engines or generator sets to help reduce specified exhaust pollutants.

But what exactly does an RECD do, and why is it important for businesses operating diesel generators?

What Is a RECD for DG Set?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an emission-control system fitted to an existing diesel generator. Rather than replacing the entire generator, a suitable retrofit device can be incorporated into the exhaust system to control specified emissions.

The design and operating principle of an RECD can vary depending on the technology used. Therefore, businesses should not assume that every RECD is suitable for every generator.

The generator's engine model, power rating, exhaust configuration, operating conditions, and applicable regulatory requirements should be considered before selecting a device.

Why Do DG Sets Need Emission Control?

Diesel engines produce exhaust gases during combustion. These emissions can include particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and other substances.

The quantity of emissions depends on several factors, including engine design, operating load, maintenance condition, fuel quality, combustion efficiency, and the age of the engine.

Emission-control systems are intended to reduce specified pollutants and help facilities manage their environmental impact.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has published a procedure for testing retrofit emission-control devices for gensets. This provides a technical framework for evaluating the performance of such systems.

How Does an RECD Work?

An RECD is generally integrated into the exhaust system of the diesel generator. Exhaust gases pass through the emission-control device before being released into the atmosphere.

Depending on the technology, the device may target particulate matter or other specified pollutants.

However, the effectiveness of any system depends on several factors. Correct sizing, proper installation, engine condition, operating load, and regular maintenance all influence performance.

This is why selecting a device based solely on its advertised emission-reduction percentage is not sufficient.

Can an RECD Be Installed on an Existing DG Set?

One of the main purposes of retrofit technology is to provide an emission-control option for suitable existing equipment.

A facility may already have a functioning generator that continues to meet its power requirements. Depending on applicable regulations and technical suitability, an emission-control retrofit can be considered instead of immediately replacing the complete generator.

Before installation, the owner should verify the generator's specifications and applicable requirements.

What Should You Check Before Buying?

RECD for DG SetBefore purchasing an , collect the following information:

DG-set capacity
Engine manufacturer and model
Engine power
Manufacturing year
Fuel type
Exhaust-pipe dimensions
Typical operating load
Existing emission-control equipment
Site location
Applicable environmental requirements

The supplier should also provide relevant technical and testing documentation.

Why Is Certification Important?

Certification and testing help purchasers determine whether an emission-control device has been evaluated according to an applicable technical procedure.

CPCB's RECD procedure provides a framework for testing retrofit emission-control devices.

Therefore, buyers should request genuine test reports, certification documents, and technical specifications instead of relying only on statements such as "approved" or "compliant."

Does RECD Replace DG-Set Maintenance?

No. This is an important consideration.

An RECD is an emission-control component; it is not a replacement for regular engine servicing.

A poorly maintained engine may produce excessive smoke or abnormal emissions. Issues with fuel injection, filters, lubrication, combustion, or other components can affect overall performance.

The DG set should therefore continue to receive preventive maintenance according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Conclusion

RECD for DG SetA is a retrofit emission-control solution designed for suitable existing diesel generators. It can help control specified exhaust emissions when the correct device is selected, properly installed, and adequately maintained.

However, RECD selection should always be based on the individual generator's specifications and the applicable regulatory requirements. Businesses should verify current requirements, review testing and certification documents, and maintain both the DG set and RECD properly.

For organisations seeking to manage emissions from existing generators, understanding RECD is an important step toward responsible and technically sound DG-set operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does RECD stand for?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . It is an emission-control system designed to be installed on suitable existing diesel engines or generator sets.

2. What is the purpose of RECD for DG Set?

The purpose of an RECD is to reduce specified pollutants from diesel-generator exhaust and support emission-control requirements applicable to the installation.

3. Can RECD be installed on an old DG set?

It may be possible to install an RECD on a suitable existing DG set. Compatibility should be evaluated based on the engine, capacity, exhaust system, operating conditions, and applicable requirements.

4. Does an RECD make a DG set pollution-free?

No. An RECD is intended to reduce specified emissions; it does not make a diesel generator completely emission-free.

5. Is DG maintenance still required after RECD installation?

Yes. Regular engine and RECD maintenance remain important for reliable operation and emission-control performance.

6. How should I choose an RECD?

Check the DG-set specifications, applicable regulations, testing or certification documents, technical compatibility, installation requirements, maintenance needs, warranty, and service support before purchasing.
