A DG Set RECD Device and a regular exhaust system serve different purposes, although both are connected to the generator's exhaust arrangement. A regular exhaust system mainly carries exhaust gases safely away from the engine, while an RECD adds an emission-control function to treat targeted pollutants in the exhaust.

What Does a Regular DG Exhaust System Do?

A conventional exhaust system is designed to transport exhaust gases from the engine to a suitable discharge point.

It may include components such as:

Exhaust piping
Silencer
Expansion joints
Supports
Exhaust outlet

Its primary function is exhaust routing and noise management.

What Does an RECD Do?

An RECD adds an emission-control function.

It is installed within or as part of the exhaust arrangement and is designed to reduce targeted pollutants, particularly particulate emissions depending on the technology.

What Is the Main Difference?

The simplest difference is:

Regular exhaust system = exhaust routing and noise control

RECD = emission treatment/control

In many installations, an RECD works together with the existing exhaust system rather than replacing every component.

Does RECD Replace a Silencer?

Not necessarily.

The function of a silencer is primarily related to exhaust noise reduction, while an RECD is designed for emission control.

Some systems may combine functions, but this depends on the specific product design.

Can an RECD Be Added to an Existing Exhaust System?

Yes, retrofit devices are intended to be integrated into suitable existing systems.

However, technical compatibility should be confirmed before installation.

What Should Be Checked?

Important considerations include:

Exhaust flow
Exhaust temperature
Back pressure
Pipe diameter
DG capacity
Installation space
Maintenance access

Why Is Back Pressure Important?

Adding equipment to the exhaust line can increase resistance to exhaust flow.

Therefore, the total exhaust-system back pressure should remain within the engine manufacturer's permissible limit.

Conclusion

A regular DG exhaust system primarily transports exhaust gases and manages functions such as noise control, while a DG Set RECD Device adds emission-control capability. An RECD can be integrated with a suitable existing exhaust arrangement, but compatibility and back-pressure requirements should be evaluated before installation.

FAQs

1. Is RECD the same as a DG silencer?

No. They generally serve different functions.

2. Can RECD be added to an existing exhaust system?

Yes, if the system is technically suitable for the retrofit device.

3. Does an RECD control noise?

Its primary purpose is emission control. Noise control is generally handled by the silencer or other acoustic components.

4. Why is exhaust back pressure important?

Excessive back pressure can affect engine operation.

5. Can an RECD replace the complete exhaust system?

Not necessarily. It is generally an emission-control addition or component of the exhaust arrangement.

What Is the Difference Between a DG Set RECD Device and a Regular Exhaust System?

A DG Set RECD Device and a regular exhaust system serve different purposes, although both are connected to the generator's exhaust arrangement.
