Specifications can vary by configuration and are subject to manufacturer changes, so the current manufacturer’s documentation should be consulted when exact specifications are important.

Understanding the GLOCK 45 Gen5 Configuration

The G45 belongs to the Gen5 generation, which introduced several design changes compared with earlier GLOCK generations.

crossover configurationOne notable characteristic is the . Instead of using the same slide and frame dimensions throughout the pistol family, the G45 combines a compact slide with a full-size frame.

This design gives the G45 its distinctive configuration while retaining the dimensions and controls associated with the full-size frame.

What Does MOS Mean on a GLOCK?

MOSModular Optic System stands for .

GLOCK developed MOS configurations to simplify the mounting of compatible optical sights. Certain GLOCK models use adapter plates that allow compatible optics to be mounted to the slide.

The GLOCK G45 MOS was introduced as an optic-ready version of the G45 crossover design. GLOCK states that the G45 MOS incorporates a factory-milled slide and mounting plates designed for popular reflex optical sights.

This makes it important to distinguish between:

Standard configuration:

The pistol uses its conventional sighting arrangement.

MOS configuration:

The slide incorporates an optic-mounting system designed for compatible optical sights.

GLOCK 45 vs. G45 MOS

The fundamental platform is similar, but the major distinction is the optic-ready configuration.

GLOCK’s published buyer information lists the G45 and G45 MOS with the same basic crossover dimensions and 4.02-inch barrel length, while the MOS version adds the Modular Optic System.

How the Modular Optic System Works

The GLOCK MOS configuration uses a mounting interface and, depending on the model and optic, an appropriate adapter plate.

GLOCK provides numbered adapter plates for different optical systems. The correct plate depends on the specific pistol configuration and optic footprint.

not every red-dot optic uses the same mounting footprintThis is important because .

Before installing an optic, users should verify:

The exact GLOCK model.
The specific MOS configuration.
The optic manufacturer’s footprint.
The appropriate adapter plate.
The correct mounting hardware.
The manufacturer’s installation instructions.

GLOCK specifically warns that its MOS pistols should only be used with the appropriate cover plate or correctly installed adapter plate and optical system.

Why Optic Compatibility Matters

Red-dot and reflex sights are available in numerous footprints and mounting standards. Consequently, choosing an optic simply because it is marketed as a “red dot for GLOCK” does not necessarily mean that it will directly fit every GLOCK MOS configuration.

The optic footprint, adapter plate, screw dimensions, and slide configuration all need to correspond.

GLOCK’s official MOS documentation provides compatibility information for several optic manufacturers and adapter-plate configurations.

GLOCK 45 Dimensions and Technical Data

189 mm34 mm139 mm including the magazine102 mmThe manufacturer’s current G45 specification page lists an overall length of , an overall width of , a height of , and a barrel length of .

These measurements are useful when researching:

Holster compatibility
Storage considerations
Transportation requirements
Firearm specifications
Comparative research
Training equipment
Sight configurations

However, accessory compatibility should always be confirmed with the relevant manufacturer rather than inferred solely from dimensions.

GLOCK 45 Gen5 Design Characteristics

The G45 incorporates several Gen5 design characteristics, including the GLOCK Marksman Barrel, ambidextrous slide-stop lever, Modular Backstrap System, and front slide serrations. GLOCK highlighted these features when introducing the G45 MOS.

The Gen5 platform also uses GLOCK’s nDLC surface treatment on applicable models, which the manufacturer describes as providing increased resistance to corrosion and wear.

G45 MOS and Reflex Optics

An optic-ready configuration provides a mounting interface for compatible reflex sights without requiring the owner to independently machine a conventional slide for an optic.

This distinction is particularly important when comparing a standard configuration with an MOS configuration.

GLOCK describes reflex optics as allowing the shooter to view the reticle while focusing on the target, whereas conventional iron sights require alignment between the front and rear sights.

The choice between conventional sights and an optic depends on the user’s intended application, training, equipment compatibility, and applicable laws.

Safe Handling and Storage

Regardless of configuration, responsible firearm ownership begins with safe handling.

Basic safety principles include:

Treat every firearm as loaded until personally verified otherwise.
Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to fire.
Know the target and what is beyond it.
Store firearms securely and prevent unauthorized access.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal laws.
Follow the manufacturer’s owner’s manual and safety instructions.

When working with an MOS configuration, the firearm should be unloaded and verified safe before any optic or adapter-plate work is performed. GLOCK’s own instructions specifically emphasize completing the safety check before working on the MOS assembly.
