Studying in Japan is an opportunity for students who want to experience a different education system, explore new academic fields, and develop international knowledge. Japan has several types of higher education institutions, including universities, junior colleges, graduate schools, colleges of technology, and specialized training colleges. Students can choose a suitable academic path according to their previous education, interests, language skills, and career goals.

Students planning to study in Japan for International Students should first understand the education system, admission requirements, available courses, language expectations, entrance exams, scholarships, student visa process, and future career options. Starting the research early can help them choose the right course, prepare the necessary documents, meet admission requirements, and complete each stage of the application process on time.

Understand the Japanese Education System

Before selecting a course, students should understand how higher education is structured in Japan. International students can apply to different types of institutions depending on their academic background and career objectives.

Universities generally provide undergraduate degree programs, while graduate schools offer master's and doctoral programs. Junior colleges and specialized training institutions can provide more focused academic or professional education.

The academic year commonly begins in April, although some universities and graduate schools also offer admission during September or October. Therefore, students should check the intake options of their selected institution before planning an application.

Check Eligibility After Class 12

Indian students who have completed Class 12 can explore undergraduate programs if they satisfy the required eligibility conditions. In general, applicants need to have completed 12 years of formal education for admission to a Japanese undergraduate university or junior college.

Students should keep their school certificates, transcripts, and other academic records ready. Some institutions may have additional requirements depending on the course.

Students who already hold a bachelor's degree can explore master's programs. Graduate admission normally requires an appropriate academic background, and some programs may have additional research or subject-specific requirements.

Choose the Right Course

Course selection should be based on academic interests and long-term career plans rather than popularity alone. Students can explore areas such as engineering, technology, business, management, science, humanities, design, healthcare, and other specialized subjects.

Before selecting a course, students should review the curriculum, teaching language, academic requirements, examination process, duration, and career-related opportunities.

It is also important to understand whether the course is designed for international students. Some programs are fully taught in English, while others use Japanese or a combination of Japanese and English.

Research Suitable Universities

Students should compare institutions carefully before submitting an application. The quality of a course depends on more than the institution's general reputation.

Important factors include:

Available courses and specializations
Language of instruction
Admission requirements
Entrance examinations
Application deadlines
Academic support
Location and campus environment
International student support
Career-related opportunities

Official institution information should always be checked because admission requirements can vary significantly from one school to another. The official Study in Japan school search also advises students to confirm the latest information directly with their selected institution.

Understand Japanese Language Requirements

Language requirements depend on the selected program. Students applying to Japanese-taught programs may need Japanese language proficiency and could be asked to provide JLPT or EJU results.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test has five levels, from N5 to N1, with N1 representing the highest level. The exact level needed depends on the institution and course.

Students should not assume that every course requires Japanese. English-taught degree programs are available at universities and graduate schools, and Japanese proficiency is often not required for admission to such programs.

Can Students Study Without Japanese?

Students can find degree programs taught entirely in English, which can make Japan accessible to international students who are not yet comfortable with Japanese. However, academic language and everyday communication are different matters.

Learning basic Japanese can make daily activities easier and help students communicate with local people. It can also support students who plan to work in Japan after graduation.

Students should therefore consider Japanese language learning as a useful skill even when it is not an admission requirement.

Prepare for Entrance Examinations

Some institutions require international students to take entrance examinations. The examination requirements vary according to the university, department, and course.

The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, known as EJU, assesses international applicants in areas that can include Japanese language ability, science, Japan and the World, and mathematics. The required subjects depend on the selected institution and program.

EJU is also conducted in India, including New Delhi, which can allow eligible applicants to take the examination before travelling to Japan. Students should check the current examination schedule and the requirements of their preferred institution well in advance.

Check English Proficiency Requirements

Students applying to English-taught programs may need to demonstrate their English proficiency. The accepted examination and required level can vary by institution and course.

Therefore, students should check the admission guidelines before registering for an English-language examination. Preparing early can give them enough time to meet the required standard and submit valid test results with their application.

Understand the Role of Other Entrance Tests

Some courses may require additional academic examinations depending on the student's study level and field. Management applicants should carefully review the admission requirements of their selected program.

GRE exam registrationFor certain management-related courses, the process may become relevant if the institution specifically accepts or requires the examination. However, students should not assume that every Japanese university or management program requires GRE.

Registration Steps

Create an ETS account: • Sign up on the official platform. Ensure your name matches your ID documents exactly.

Select the test type:• Choose between the GRE General Test or a GRE Subject Test.

Choose date and location:• Pick a test center or select the at-home option, then choose an available slot.

Pay the fee:• Complete the payment online. The GRE General Test registration fee in India is approximately INR 22,500.

Important Requirements

Valid Passport:• A valid passport is mandatory as primary ID proof for test-takers in India.

Advance booking:• Slots fill up on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking 1 to 2 months early is recommended.

Prepare Important Documents

Document preparation should begin well before the application deadline. Common application materials can include academic certificates, transcripts, recommendation letters, language proficiency evidence, identification documents, application forms, and other course-specific materials.

Some institutions may require documents in Japanese or English, so students should check whether translations are necessary. The required documents can differ between institutions.

Students should keep organized copies of all submitted documents. Consistent spelling of names and accurate academic information can also help avoid unnecessary problems during the application process.

Research Scholarships Early

Scholarships can support eligible international students during their academic journey. Different scholarship opportunities can have different eligibility conditions, application periods, selection processes, and academic expectations.

Students should research scholarship opportunities alongside university applications rather than treating scholarships as a separate task at the end.

Some scholarship opportunities may require students to apply before or during the admission process, so checking deadlines early is important.

Understand the Student Visa Process

After receiving admission, international students need to prepare for immigration procedures. Students entering Japan for academic study generally receive the "Student" status of residence.

In many cases, the educational institution acts as the student's proxy when applying for a Certificate of Eligibility, commonly known as a COE. After the COE is issued, the student can apply for the appropriate visa through the Japanese embassy or consulate in their country or region of residence.

Students should carefully review the latest visa instructions and prepare all requested documents.

Think About Student Life in Japan

Academic preparation is only one part of moving abroad. Students should also prepare for everyday life, communication, transportation, accommodation, cultural differences, and classroom expectations.

Japanese society has its own customs and social practices. Understanding basic etiquette can help international students adjust more comfortably.

Students can also benefit from participating in campus activities and interacting with other students. These experiences can improve communication skills and provide a better understanding of Japanese culture.

Plan Career Opportunities Early

Career planning should begin before graduation. Students can build useful skills through academic projects, practical learning, internships, language development, and activities related to their chosen field.

Japanese language ability can be particularly useful for students who hope to work in Japan. Even students studying in English can benefit from learning Japanese because workplace communication may involve local colleagues and customers.

Students returning to India can also use their international education, technical knowledge, language skills, and cross-cultural experience when exploring career opportunities.

Final Thoughts

Studying in Japan can be a valuable academic experience for students who prepare carefully and understand the requirements before applying. Course selection, university research, academic eligibility, language ability, entrance examinations, documents, scholarships, and visa procedures all deserve attention.

The GRE exam registration process should only be considered when the selected program specifically requires or accepts the examination. Similarly, JLPT and EJU requirements depend on the course and institution.

With early planning and accurate information, students can make better decisions about their education, prepare their applications confidently, and create a stronger foundation for academic and career opportunities in Japan.
