The appropriate instrument will depend on the characteristics of the sample and the information required from the analysis.

3. Consider Sample Preparation and Degassing Procedures

Sample preparation is a critical part of gas adsorption analysis.

Materials can contain moisture, solvents, gases, or other substances adsorbed onto their surfaces. These can affect the measurement if they are not appropriately removed.

A reliable laboratory should have a defined procedure for:

Sample drying
Degassing
Temperature control
Vacuum treatment
Sample handling

However, degassing conditions should also be appropriate for the material. Excessive temperature or unsuitable treatment may alter some samples.

Ask the laboratory how it determines suitable preparation conditions for different materials.

4. Look for Technical Expertise

BET analysis involves more than simply placing a sample into an instrument.

The laboratory team should understand how factors such as sample characteristics, adsorption behavior, degassing conditions, and analysis parameters can affect the results.

Technical expertise can be particularly important when working with:

Highly porous materials
Nanomaterials
Catalysts
Activated carbon

Clear reporting is especially important when results are being used for research papers, product development, quality control, or technical documentation.

6. Ask About Testing Standards and Procedures

Depending on the application, testing may need to follow a particular standard, method, or laboratory procedure.

Discuss your requirements with the laboratory before testing and ask whether the requested analysis can be performed according to the applicable standard or agreed methodology.

This can be especially relevant for industrial quality control, contractual testing, research projects, and regulated applications.

7. Consider Laboratory Quality Practices

Quality management can be an important factor when selecting an analytical laboratory.

Depending on the purpose of the testing, you may want to check whether the laboratory maintains appropriate:

Equipment calibration procedures
Quality-control practices
Sample identification systems
Data-recording procedures
Documentation systems
Laboratory safety procedures

For projects requiring formal accreditation or specific quality requirements, verify the laboratory's current credentials and whether they cover the particular test and scope needed.

8. Check the Laboratory's Experience With Your Material

Not every material behaves the same way during gas adsorption measurements.

A laboratory that regularly works with your type of material may have a better understanding of common sample-preparation and measurement considerations.

For example, researchers working with catalysts may have different requirements from those studying pharmaceutical powders, activated carbon, ceramics, or battery materials.

When contacting a laboratory, provide information about:

Material type
Sample form
Expected surface area, if known
Approximate sample quantity
Moisture sensitivity
Required test parameters
Intended application

This allows the laboratory to determine whether its procedure is suitable for the sample.

9. Compare Turnaround Time

Testing time can be important for research and industrial projects.

Before submitting your sample, ask about:

Expected testing time
Report delivery time
Sample queue
Urgent testing options
Additional charges, if applicable

If BET results are required for a product-development milestone or research deadline, confirming the expected turnaround time in advance can help prevent delays.

10. Review Sample Requirements
